Linnea looked up from her brochure, overhearing the question. There was always one. Someone who believed they could find some newbies and gain the advantage. Leaning forward in her seat Linnea spoked up, “Rule one of an antique auction. Don’t tell anyone what you want to bid on. They usually only want to make sure you aren’t going to bid on the same thing they are.”

“Do you ever think that it’s been a little too quiet recently? Like they’re plotting something? Just waiting for our lives to go back to normal before they try to destroy it?” Vivian commented about the Ouroboros. It had certainly been too quiet in her mind, especially after all their activity up until this moment. The witch might sound paranoid, but she was not about to let her guard down.

“Or perhaps this is the next stage of their plan,” Linnea replied with a small shrug. “I mean, it’s a good tactic. Not an honourable one, but a good one.” Linnea could understand the need to fight for a cause you believed in, but she didn’t approve of how the Ouroboros went about it. “Let us destroy ourselves with fear and paranoia.”

“Actually, just like children, animals need breaks from something that may be challenging or difficult. Taking these breaks prevents frustration on both my part and the part of the animal. Eventually we go back and I revisit teaching the behavior, but it is always good to clear your head.” Camellia replied with a shrug. “I think that can be said in all situations, even when dealing with other people.”

“If you need to take a break you only had to ask,” Linnea chuckled as the two ran through central park. “Even a vampire’s stamina isn’t unlimited.” Rounding a corner Linnea gestured to bench up ahead, “We can pause there for a bit. Do some stretching.”

“Take it.” Elise handed it over and then closed her eyes. “I don’t want to see you looking at it or I’ll be embarrassed.” 

Linnea took the drawing from her head, smiling in affectionate amusement at her words. “Am I allowed to comment on it, or will that embarrass you too?” Linnea joked lightheartedly before looking down at the drawing. “You have nothing at all to be embarrassed about, this is wonderful.”

It was the only way to look at it now, considering how hard becoming a vampire as for her to navigate through. “ Oh yeah. It’s not what I’d call setting the mood at all. No that’s completely fine. It’s fine. He hopefully should be busy with other thing’s, it’s very complicated”

“One of the perks is getting a lot of time to perfect things, including how to actually live as a vampire,” Linnea replied, knowing there was no one around to overhear. “I know from experience.” Linnea could tell the other vampire was trying to look on the positive side, something which the blonde admired. “Most breakups are, nevermind those affected by supernatural things.”

“No, then it’s just desperate,” Naomi replied, laughing. She would know, she had chugged more than her fair share of coffee in her position as Mallory’s assistant, and even before when trying to balance work and school. Drinking coffee alone was desperate, drinking alcohol alone was depressing. “So, that book is for work then…?” she prompted as she got to her feet and headed towards the door.

Linnea laughed as she followed Naomi towards the door, “Desperate to stay awake long enough to get through the day.” Caffeine didn’t have any effect of her, but she’d seen enough blurry eyed commuters in the morning holding a cup of coffee to know her words were true. “It is,” Linnea answered with a nod. “I’m a bounty hunter, which I swear is rarely accurately portrayed in films. Most people seem to think I’m some kind of assassin.”

For Nik, family had always been a loose, indeterminable concept - it was blood, but it wasn’t about blood at all. It had been a place where you were wanted, rather than an arbitrary group of people you’d been born into. But he had learned the hard way that once formed, that family could not be replaced - once someone was taken away from you, they left behind an aching gap of something missing, something not quite determinable - a longing. He hated longings. “Don’t I know it.”, despite the heavy thoughts that clouded his mind, the chuckle that left his lips was genuine - despite Minna and Cas being gone, he still had a very angry brother to worry about, and a sister that was less than happy with his life choices. “Oh I’m afraid that’s beyond her. I think she thinks I’m doing this out of spite - what other reason is there for an older brother to do anything? God forbid it be out of worry. I’m both the Montague and the Capulet to her Juliet.” He watched her as she spoke, used to slipping between looking unobtrusively for the expressions on one’s features and fiddling with whatever he was holding - this time it was a pack of cigarettes he’d gotten out of the car and was now pulling one out. It seemed like worry would always be a sort of universal feeling, but Nik didn’t think he’d ever quite get used to it. His smile was a thin, slanted thing as he offered her a cigarette, “Yeah, I’m not very good at that. I used to have back-up on that front but…”, he cleared his throat and placed a cigarette between his lips to dangle precariously as he looked for the lighter, “I should’ve asked her for lessons while we still had the time.” The lighter was a zippo, an old one, dented in places, scratched here and engraved there - names, dates, years - years condensed onto a tiny thing. He flicked it open and lit up, “Well, let’s hope I don’t piss you off. One headlight on this pompous piece of metal costs twice as much as my first car.” A question tethered on the tip of his tongue when she mentioned her eyesight - but it remained unsaid as he took a drag and let the smoke seep out - it wasn’t the kind of question an unassuming human would ask. “Yeah. Haven’t been there in a while though - now Italians are slowly taking over the closet I’m afraid.”

Linnea nodded as she listened, happy to let the stranger offload some of his worries on her. In her long lifetime Linnea had learnt few things were as complicated and as wonderful as family. Her parents never had any other children, but back then your entire village was an extension of your family. If a community wasn’t bonded so closely they rarely survived long. Family was still something Linnea yearned for, even after all this time. Knowing that she would never be able to build a family in the conventional manner Linnea still managed to build her own over the centuries. Even if the people she cared for were mortal, and her time with them fleeting, Linnea still valued her time with them. Family was worth the pain. A small laugh escaped at his analogy, “I’m sure she knows that your actions come from a place of love. Even if she doesn’t want to acknowledge it.” He didn’t have to say it, Linnea knew what loss looked like by now. She shook her head as he offered her cigarette. She knew many vampires who smoked because it didn’t harm them, but it could still harm those around them. “I have many vices, but that isn’t one of them,” She said declining politely, gaze briefly fixated on the lighter. It was certainly unique. “That’s advice everyone should follow, it’s never wise to piss me off,” Linnea commented with a smile. “Fortunately, it is not something easily done. And if you do I’ll make sure not to go for the car.” Linnea was never someone who easily lost her temper. Vikings were often stereotyped as short-tempered ruthless people, and whilst there was some truth to that they were also warriors. Warriors who knew the importance of controlling that anger and channelling it. If you lost your head in battle you were only helping your enemy gain the advantage. “It’s been a number of years since I visited London myself, or England at all.” In fact, Linnea hadn’t returned since the end of world war II, but she couldn’t really divulge that.

“Sorry–– I’m not…I don’t…work here…” Charlie made a mental note never to wear the same colored shirt as a store’s employee uniform again. This was the third person to ask him for help in ten minutes. Still, he gave his best helpful smile, “But I can help you find–– well….okay then.” They were already flipping him off before he could finish his offer to aid them in finding a sales associate or manager. “D’you think they thought I was lying?” he asked the person in the aisle with him, not sure why everyone seemed so peeved when he told them he didn’t work there.

Linnea glanced up from the books she was looking at in time to see the other customer storm off. It wasn’t in her nature to think badly of people without just cause, but the unnecessary rudeness certainly ruffled her feathers. “You have an honest looking face, so I doubt that was their problem,” Linnea said with a shake of her head. “Perhaps you have a look-alike who works here, which is why they think you were lying. Either that or they’re just incredibly ill-mannered.”

The machine ate her dollar. Oh boy – that was the cherry on top of her absolutely wonderful day. The huntress groaned, all she wanted was a Reese’s. Was that so bad? She needed chocolate to get through her day. “Don’t do this to me,” she whined softly pressing the button a few times frustratedly to get her dollar returned. However, that didn’t work. And maybe she shouldn’t kick a machine in public places? But she was angry and she really wanted that candy bar. “Ow, mother fu–” she trailed off when she realized she had company and she shot a sheepish look in their direction. “Blasted thing stole my dollar,” Anna grumbled with a flush coming to her cheeks and she stepped away from the machine.

A laugh escaped from Linnea’s lips as she watched the angry hunter give a swift kick to the machine. “Don’t apologise, I’m just glad I’m not on the receiving end,” She commented with a smile walking towards Anna and the vending machine. “Whilst I’m all for kicking your foes, some things take more finesse.” As she spoke Linnea took out a hairpin from her hair and slotted it into the machine’s lock. “It’s amazing how many of these machines still have a simple lock,” Linnea said, making quick work of it. Opening the door Linnea turned to the huntress, “You may as well take what you paid for.”

That would be rather uncomfortable, I much rather sleep in the nude. I know from experience that can work just as well. It can be rather... disarming.

If I thought that then I’d think the people who fought them were petty and pointless... which means that I would I think that I am petty and pointless. I have my bad points but I certainly don’t believe I’m either of those things.

Linnea Ekström, 30/904, Vampire

BIOGRAPHY

TW: violence, murder, miscarriage

Linnea daughter of Flóki was born not long after the Scandinavians had stopped raiding and the Viking age had come to an end. She was born into a long line of famous Viking warriors who were not only known for their skills on the battlefield but also their skills as boat builders. With one skill no longer needed Linnea’s parents settled down in a peaceful village in the South of Sweden where they offered their protective services and earned money building boats. Linnea loved her childhood, being taught how to fight by her father and playing in the boatyard with her friend Gidyan. By the time she turned ten Linnea had proved to be a promising warrior and she was gifted her first weapon, an axe.

As time went on her parents became famed for their boat building skills and they moved to a larger village. Linnea grew into a beautiful woman who was renowned for her fighting skills. No man or woman wanted to come against her in battle. She dreamed of dying in battle and joining her ancestors in Valhalla. She met her first love on the battle field and they were soon married. Linnea was as happy as she could have hoped for, and the only thing left for her to aspire for was to become an even greater warrior. Which is why when a traveler promised Linnea that he could make her stronger and faster she trusted him, much to her undoing.

The traveler did fulfill his promise, but he didn’t tell Linnea the whole truth. He didn’t tell Linnea that he was a vampire, and in order to become more powerful she had to become one too. By the time she discovered the truth it was too later and Linnea was left distraught. She had been pregnant and by becoming a member of the undead her unborn child died. Enraged Linnea killed her sire, putting a stake through his decapitated head and mounting it outside her home. Linnea vowed her child’s death would not be in vain, and made sure she used her new abilities to become the deadliest warrior on the battlefield. 

As the years past and those around Linnea passed away she decided to leave Sweden, seeking adventure elsewhere. For the next few centuries Linnea went from one war to another, always choosing causes she believed in. She fought with the British in both World Wars, against the Christians in the Crusades, joined the Russian, French and Scottish revolutions. She believes it is still possible for her to join her brethren in Valhalla by being  struck down in battle. More recently Linnea has joined the U.S. Armed Forces as part of the Marine Corps; only leaving because she suffered an injury that should have left her unable to walk.

Not knowing where to go Linnea chose New York City to settle simply because she knew an old friend moved there. Linnea saved her life almost a century ago, and the two became friends. Despite only having contact via letters for many years Linnea thought it would be nicer moving to a place that had at least one friendly face. Linnea has lived in NYC for just under a month now, and it has quickly become her home. Despite it not being the battlefield she’s used to Linnea still intends to die in battle. She is frequently enters the ring at the sanctuary, and chose a career as a bounty hunter, a job Linnea is incredibly suited for and one she loves.

Despite being a skilled warrior who feels the call of the battlefield Linnea is far from what one might expect. In order to cope with all the bloodshed and the violence she has seen Linnea makes sure to pursue her other interests and have frequently been described as a nerd. She loves to learn, and takes every opportunity to do so. She’s also a fan of comic books, Sci-Fi, Chess and various other activities that are labelled ‘dorky’.

Linnea has loved her life, however part of her can’t help but wish she could have children. She often wonders what it would have been like to have never become a vampire, and to have had a family of her own. She still feels the loss of her first child, and mourns the fact that she’ll never be able to experience holding her own child in her arms.

Due to her love of books Linnea has a vast collection of rare books and first editions that she’s collected over the years. All of which she’s had moved to New York into her personal library.

Linnea’s religion is extremely important to her. Although she is interesting in Science and believes in evolution Linnea still believe in her Gods and that she will one day get in Valhalla. It’s never even crossed her mind that being a vampire could affect this.

Traveling the world and being so old has meant that Linnea has picked up a number of languages. She’s only fluent in seven, but knows words and phrases from numerous others.

Linnea is a legally registered bounty hunter with a license (even if she had to compel her way through some of the paperwork), but she is also a bounty hunter for hire. She may not have been in New York for long, but she’s already started building a reputation.

“That’s very kind of you,” Linnea said warmly, accepting the others offer. “I’m always glad of some company, especially when coffee is involved. It isn’t as enjoyable when drank alone.”

“Fugazi...?” Linnea inquired, an eyebrow raised in confusion. “I may be showing my age, but I’m more than happy being an old lady not knowing what that word means. It sounds like a kind of fungi. I’m going to guess from context that they were saying your bracelet was a knockoff?”

Linnea had been enjoying a quite a drink until the bar suddenly erupted into chaos. A glass smashed in the worn wood beside her, glass flying everywhere. Shielding her face Linnea cared little about the glass in her arm as she turned around to see the source. A violent brawl had broken out between two men, one had obviously been trained how to fight. Linnea recognised a couple of moves that only came with skill. The trained fighter had the upper hand, he had the other pinned against the wall and Linnea could tell he was going to do something he’d soon regret. Linnea was no stranger to that look in his eye, the one where reason and logic no longer existed and every action was based on adrenaline and animalistic instinct. In a few long strides Linnea had made her way across the room, she forced herself between the two men. Looking first at losing man Linnea’s eyes gazed into his, “I suggest you go home and tend to your wounds. You’ll remember nothing of this man, only that you got into a drunken bar brawl.” Turning towards the other man Linnea smiled kindly, “I suggest getting out of here before the cops arrive.” @risingblaze
