The Darkspawn
"Look there!" Katriel shouted, pointing ahead.
The four of them froze as they saw a humanoid shape slowly shamble toward them out of the darkness. At first it seemed to be a man, but as it drew closer, they saw it clearly was not. It was a hideous mockery of a man, skin puckered and boiled with bulging white eyes and a toothy, malicious grin. It wore a mishmash of metal armor, some rusted and some of it held together with scraps of frayed leather, and in its hands it carried a wicked-looking sword, all points and odd angles.
The creature held its sword in front of it in a menacing manner, but it did not charge them. It moved slowly but incautiously, staring at them hungrily as if they didn't represent a true threat of any kind.
The deep humming was coming from it. The creature was moaning softly, almost chanting, and this moan built upon the sounds of many others behind it in the shadows. They hummed in unison, a hushed and deadly whisper the creatures spoke as one.
Maric took a step backwards, gulping loudly.
More began to appear behind the first. More tall ones, some wearing strange headdresses and blindfolds, others in more im pressive armor covered in dangerous spikes. Some wore little armor at all, their black and diseased skin covered in scars. There were shorter ones, as well, ones almost dwarf-sized with pointed ears and wide, demonic grins. All of them walked as calmly as the first, shambling toward them while moaning and hissing softly. The sound was loud now, reverberating around them like a physical force.
"Darkspawn," Katriel announced unnecessarily.
— Dragon Age, The Stolen Throne (David Gaider)
Inquisitor: That was like veilfire. It claimed… this was a refuge for elven slaves.
Sera: Slaves… of other elves? The old elves? Pissers.
Varric: You mean the ancient elves kept slaves? Maker’s breath, one more thing never to tell Daisy.
Cole (more spirit): Cowering, cringing, blinking in the light. Then cool hands, kind voices. Sleep now. You’re safe.
Cole (more human): Yes. I can feel their pain. They came here hurt, hungry. This was help, a new home.
Inquisitor: This whole valley was a sanctuary created by the Dread Wolf, Fen’Harel.
The Valley:
Dalish Inquisitor: This doesn’t make sense. In Dalish legends, Fen’Harel is our god of misfortune.
Vivienne: Curious then, that the Dalish speak of Fen’Harel as a monster.
Dorian: Fen’Harel? The Dalish elves’ god of misfortune?
Inquisitor: This is… Fen’Harel helping former slaves as a mortal. Not a god.
Cassandra: He took great pains to renounce his supposed divinity.
Iron Bull: Kinda curious that this guy had to specify he wasn’t a god.
Blackwall: He made this because he didn’t want followers worshiping him?
Varric: “Ordinary guy saves people, accidentally founds religion.” Sounds a lot like the Chant, actually.
Cole: Worship makes you more. He just wanted to help.
Sera: But Fenny helping is… bonkers.
Dorian: Fen’Harel sounds like quite the rebel. The old “elven gods” must have simply loved that.
Vivienne: To the Dalish, Fen’Harel is the great deceiver. Perhaps that’s propaganda begun by the opposing “gods."
Inquisitor: This claims the elven “gods” were just “Evanuris”—powerful but completely mortal mages.
Blackwall: Almost like these slaves were being untaught what they’d learned. Being formed into a rebellion.
Cassandra: Was this the start of an uprising? Freed elven slaves against their former masters?
Iron Bull: Whoever ran this place was trying to rebuild the slaves’ confidence. Get rid of old propaganda.
Inquisitor: If that’s true, Fen’Harel was teaching these freed slaves the truth about these “false gods”.
Dalish Romanced Inquisitor Lavellan: That’s Fen’Harel - removing Dalish vallaslin? Solas said they were used to mark slaves.
Cole: Cleansed, fresh-faced where the marks once marred. Fen’Harel helping, healing, giving hope.
Sera: Not Dalish. They weren’t Dalish yet. Right?
Varric: Isn’t this place older than the Dalish?
Dorian: But these ruins are older than the Dalish
Vivienne: It can’t be. These ruins predate the Dalish.

What it’s like to be Tranquil ?
(…)
He shuddered as if the thought were too horrible to contemplate.
Cole thought he might not continue, but then Pharamond nodded, steeling himself. "I find it ironic the Rite of Tranquility cuts one off from the land of dreams, because a dream is exactly what it feels like. Everything in a dream is as it should be, nothing is out of place... yet part of you knows something is not right. This isn't your home, this isn't your life... it isn't you.
"Yet one cannot act other than the dream allows. It follows its course, and you follow it believing nothing is real. You will tum the corner and awaken, safe and sound. Yet you never do. Instead you are slowly smothered in a crystal-clear silence that has no meaning.” — Pharamond

"The spirits see the world in our minds, and they try to emulate it. They don't understand that what they're seeing isn't how it truly is. It's mixed up with memory and emotion, but they think it's real, and they find it fascinating. They're drawn to it. But not all dreams are created by spirits." — Rhys
