wait while im on the subject, another misunderstanding i see a lot is how jon’s power works. i think it’s helpful to think of the information that the eye feeds him as less like… random facts. it’s almost always really invasive personal stuff. like, things that the other person wouldn’t expect or want you to know. 

so if martin gave jon tea and he was having an Eye Moment™ it’d be less likely to bombard him with facts about the chemical composition of the tea and more likely to go into excruciating detail about how oolong tea makes martin think of his mother and all the unpleasant silences he remembers while drinking it alongside her. that kinda thing.

Woke up a little while ago from a dream where the latest Tumblr trend was people drawing Jon TMA like a six-winged angel and an actual biblically accurate angel behind him. The biblically accurate angel was meant to represent one of The Entities. Every drawing had the caption “At what point does the Watcher become The Eye?”

I don’t even listen to TMA. All of my knowledge on it comes from Tumblr osmosis. It was a very cryptic dream but the art was pretty so I’m not complaining

I was going to say that Jon has whatever the opposite of plot armor is, what with him getting traumatized roughly once every 9 episodes up until 160*, but he actually has the best plot armor you can give a character without making it unrealistic. The plot armor of a tragedy.

I'm remembering The Song of Achilles, where the prophecy goes that Achilles will not die until Hector dies. Flip it around, as Patroclus does, and if Hector lives, Achilles cannot die.

Jonathan Sims is the protagonist in a tragedy. That being said, he must die at the end. (I've actually no idea if this is a real rule of a tragedy, but it sure seems like one.) Flip it around, and he cannot die until the end.

He has plot armor of adamant with a chink in the Achilles heel. Nothing can kill him until the end, whatever that may be. He will survive what is thrown at him until, well, until Jonny finishes spinning the web around him. Once the story is spun, he shall die. (I sound like the podcast hasn't finished yet. But you know what I mean.)

thinking about the fact that week after week we learn about new plot points that were changed by having Jon and Martin be a couple, the nature of their relationship, and giving Martin more screen time... thinking about the fact that Jon was supposed to wander the apocalyptic world alone until they decided that he and Martin would be together by then... thinking about the fact that Jon was supposed to be alone at the Panopticon and then have a confrontation with web!Martin until they realised that making Martin a web avatar would make the fandom question his motives throughout the podcast and they didn't want to send a message that he was lying all that time... thinking about the fact that Jon's relationship with Martin caused them to change Jon's arc from being about a slow descent to an inevitable decision to a story of someone struggling to make it along, someone we feel sorry for... thinking about the fact that loving each other the way they did gave both Jon and Martin a little happier ending than they were supposed to get
