Tetra x September

They started as a scenario where their mutual goals seemed compatible. And that evolved, over time and minor disagreements that never dug anywhere deep, into a sort of existential trust.

(Everything about Tetra comes back to the existential motivation/personhood theory, in the end. This is one such case where it gets weird.) Because Tetra sits down and realises e sees no plausible future where being true to enself and being a loyal friend to September are conflicting goals. Which makes en free to abandon personal boundaries entirely when it comes to him and their relationship.

Now, Tetra often forgets that other people don't view the world the way e does, and a lot of this gets lost in translation. But eventually enough slips out to make it clear that whatever e says about not ‘being in love’, this is actually a closer commitment than a standard marriage. (As February puts it: Really, you're just as stupid about him as he is about you.)

Recent post has me now thinking about lamp oil and monster hunting. Hallowrove doesn't do a full-on classic big zee creature hunt too often, but when they do, they don't like letting any of it go to waste. That means a lot of butchery, a lot of bone cleaning, a lot of selling off the scraps to zailors of their acquaintance for bait, and eventually when they realize it could be done, a lot of distilling various blubbers into lamp oil.

This goes well most of the time. Whether Surface or Neathy, deep water is cold, and things tend to need a thick fat layer to survive it. There's no lack of material, and one zee-beast's worth could probably last her and her closest friends a good few weeks. The issue is, of course...not all oil sources are equal, when it comes to the zee. It takes a bit of trial and error to realize which beasts are safe to use, and which will end up fumigating her cabin with tarrish peligin smoke, or a feral sense of need to clamp something in her jaws, or hallucinations of the false-voice of Storm at the edge of sleep. You know, normal considerations where lamps are concerned. Somewhere in Hallowrove's notes on her very messy upstairs desk, there is a tier list of which zee beasts are best to use for lamp oil. The selection of old reliables on there is always just slightly less appealing than boiling down a new grease to see if it will do anything interesting, much to the chagrin of her sanity and cleanliness of her curtains.

It's Chrysoprase Tetra, dressed in honour of the occasion in a heavy robe decorated with (hopefully replica) fluke spines. The single eye in the centre of es face is real though, a particularly neat work of shapeling arts.

The Frostbitten Tomb-Colonist has been an expert in everything under not under the sun in her lifetime, but the fact of moving on to other things so often means she's an expert in a lot of things for the time when she was interested in them. Which could be a few hundred years ago, or a thousand. She'll get around to brushing up when it's needed, she's sure things haven't changed that much, right?

What I'm saying is she may or may not still think leeches have a valid medical use. Woops.

wines is like you included STONES instead of me??? stones??????? and spices is like at least stones knows how to keep track of valuable objects. you couldn't track a sloth if it landed on your nose. and wines GASPS in the most offended noise ever conceived in the universe. meanwhile transport is actively crawling out the window to its imminent demise and neither of them notice because they're too busy insulting each other

transport successfully crawls out the window and falls approximately 50 stories before flopping directly (and harmlessly) into happles' stupidly fluffy dewlap fur and it's like oh hello!!! baby time!!!!!! did you have a good flight?? and transport babbles very loudly. and happles nods very sagely. well, it says. you can help weigh down this subject's windpipe so they stop screaming while i try to invert their arteries. would that make you feel better? and transport babbles affirmatively. and that's how mr transport helps auncle happles do a mad science

approximately five hours later happles is strolling into spices' apartment with mr transport snuggled against its chest and spices and wines are Still fighting. wines is complaining about how spices thought the vake would be a good babysitter but it couldn't be trusted with one stupid baby. spices is squeaking about how at least veils teaches that stupid baby important life lessons (hunting and killing) while meanwhile all wines can do is drunkenly cry about its life choices. happles clears its throat. both of them snap their heads over and yell at it to go away. mr transport is fortunately sleeping very soundly and cutely throughout this entire affair. like this

happles says if they're going to get physical the least they could do is let it be their third. this insane statement breaks both spices and wines' brains for a full minute. the silence is blissful. then 60 seconds pass and they remember they're in a room with each other and the argument kicks back up all over again

happles sighs and walks down the hall to fires' apartment and knocks on the door. fires says Go Away. happles says do you still have that sleep gas you murdered all those unionizers with two weeks ago? fires says it's not sleep gas it's poison. they died slow and agonizing deaths. as everyone who opposes me deserves. and happles says yes yes i know. But Do You Have It. fires says why do you ask? happles says because the idiots won't stop fighting again. happles can't see fires from behind the door but it knows it's rolling its eyes. fires says why can't you just do this yourself? and happles purrs and blinks cutely and says because you're my favorite coworker and i want to see you have fun :) and fires says that's bullshit. and happles huffs and says Fine. it's because the greenhouse with my own deadly intoxicants is in the basement and i don't feel like dragging my plants all the way up here. and fires huffs and doesn't come out. so happles tries the ol' classic. it leans very very close and says This Is For The Baby. fires immediately opens the door and agrees to this plan. it can never pass up the chance to live vicariously as one of mr transport's 9 substitute parents.

happles gently sets mr transport outside spices' apartment and puts on a batgasmask (gas mask fitted for bats). it gives fires a thumbs up. fires gives it a very specific high wilderness hand sign that can't be translated because it's too vulgar to describe. happles strolls on in and says alright are you two done yet? and spices and wines pull away from where they're clawing each other apart on the floor and yell No!!! We Said Go Away!!!!!! and happles is like okie dokie :) and then spices and wines get knocked the fuck out because of fires' evil concoctions. happles cheers and closes the door and high fives fires on a job well done. fires deliberately misses the high five just to make happles upset. and then they both have to to chase veils away with a broomstick before it eats the baby. that's unrelated to the spwines divorce thing. that's just a standard occupational hazard. they deal with that on a weekly basis. thank god they knocked out wines before that happened or else it'd be perfect ammunition to keep their fight going another 7 rounds

mr transport is carefully placed in mr spices' unconscious arms and it snuggles up to its parent and makes an eepy kitten noise and slowly blinks and falls back asleep and spices (still gassed) nuzzles it and tucks a wing around it and they both purr and have a nap together. and happles and fires both go Awww. happles notices fires sounds distinctly jealous when it says that and it's like you know. i could help give you one of your own. and fires tells it to shut the fuck up. they both kick wines' unconscious body as they walk away because fuck that coworker in particular

three days later mr happles is given the entirety of babysitting duty rotation (on account of it being the only one who seemingly actually knows how to handle babies). this lasts until the other masters realize it's teaching mr transport how to wield a bonesaw. they take away its babysitting privileges not because they don't want weapons around the baby but because they don't want happles to have that much power.

this concludes my latest round of master of the bazaar sitcom fanfiction. tune in next week where i describe mr pages' exciting B plot (wherein it duels mr iron in a writing tournament and loses because it goes approximately 272728292990 characters over the word limit)

Tetra's definitely a ‘take care of it yourself’ type. But if e really does need help, e’s going to stalk es friends until one of them is mildly inconvenienced by something, then offer help ‘because I can't be doing anything too intense while I'm healing... Oh and while I'm here, do you mind double-checking those stiches on my back?’ kind of thing. More severe wounds get more explicit trades (Planning a heist I see? I could help out, I'd just need someone to patch me up a bit first...)

So, whoever is easiest to buy help from at the time.

imagine one day your 9 cats (yet another cat died because you don't give enough enrichment to your pets so they all got really into gambling) bring home a loud beetle that's slowly transforming into a kitten. and when you ask wtf that thing even is your cats are like this bug won our gambling tournament (that we continued despite murdering a cat 2 weeks ago) and it wanted to be a kitten. so we're making it into a kitten. this will take approximately 100 years and we'll be doing it on top of all the other stuff we're bad at doing. that's what the scoundrel is to the bazaar

No one in-universe knows this because they've never had a reason to check, but Tetra's cerebrospinal fluid is irrigo. Experimental rabies treatment involving a fluke core, you know how it is.

Probably more useful to you, Tetra also has viric-stained eyes. That the result of a new Silverer trying to adapt to Parabola, walking the line between 'understanding the is-not' and 'honey mazed' (Crossing the line several times, in fact.) E spent a lot of time in the lab, real and reflected, trying to figure out a balance. Strictly speaking it wasn't necessary for en to develop viric eyes but... the opportunity arose, and why not?
