Today was not going as Thomas Hunt had planned it.
MC had to work today, they were directing and filming on location today. It had taken MC months to convince the owner of the store to let them film in her store, but she finally agreed to three short days of filming. There was no time to waste, and MC needed to be there all day.
Llyria was supposed to watch Jessica today, but there was a family emergency and she couldnât watch the infant. He wasnât exactly thrilled with the new development, but he knew he could manage. MC had gone back to work after having Jess in record time, with encouragement from Thomas. It was her big break, and she needed to focus. Her focus didnât, however, keep her from spend every second of her free time with Jess and Thomas.
Thomas backed into the heavy oak doors, opening them without using his hands. He carefully walked into his classroom, setting down his briefcase and baby bag on his desk. Careful not to wake the sleeping baby in his arms, he began to set up for the dayâs lessons. He sat down at his desk cradling Jess against his shoulder. She was 2 months old, and Thomas was surprisingly gentle with her. Mc had never seen him so protective and loving towards anything in his life.
A few students noisily barged into the classroom, and Thomas glared at them instantly. They stopped walking in shock, seeing the tiny human in his arms. Thomas intensified his glare and the students scurried off to their seats.
The seats in the classroom filled quickly, and Thomas was relieved at that. The class was silent, with the exception of a few students chatting amongst themselves and exchanging classes between Hunt and each other.
Thomas cleared his throat and the class instantly quieted. He stood and walked to the front of his desk, baby in arms. âThis is Jess. I will be watching her today since my spouse is working on their movie. Yes, she is my daughter. The person who was supposed to watch her had a family emergency. If you have an issue with her being here, you may leave now.â Not a person in the class moved an inch.
âGood. Now onto todayâs lesson. The difference between camera angles and camera shots. It is important you do not confuse the two unless you want to sound like even more of an imbecile. A camera shot is the amount of space that is seen in one shot or frame. Camera shots are used to demonstrate different aspects of a filmâs setting, characters and themes. As a result, camera shots are very important in shaping meaning in a film.â
Jess started to squirm in the blanket she was wrapped in. Alarms instantly sounded in Huntâs mind, and he stopped speaking and directed all of his attention to the wriggling baby. He started to bounce Jess up and down slightly, trying to soothe her. âCamera angles are used to position the viewer so that they can understand the relationships between the characters. These are very important for shaping meaning in film as well as in other visual texts.â
Jess began to wail, and Hunt instantly became 10 times more alert. He cradled Jess in his arms quietly soothing her. âJess, itâs okay. Daddyâs here, he wonât let anything bad happen to you.â The class was shocked at how he was acting, but Hunt ignored them. Hunt leaned his head down and lightly planted a small kiss on her forehead, quieting the child instantly.

Authorâs Note: A drabble that got longer than I expected about Danny and @askmaxwarrenâs vampire OC Val, based on the new vampire quest, Flirting with Danger (if Danny hadnât been distracted by Lisa and Addi) and the amazing picture that Estella drew for that (this one). Itâs not really romance, but thatâs the best genre that fit.
I will see you all in hell.
Flirting with Danger
It had been a while since Danny had really let loose. He and Lisa had spent a few hours dancing together at Amaranth and it felt good to finally take a night off writing papers for what felt like the first time in weeks. They had both had a few shots and he had somehow lost his shirt, but he didnât mind. As the night went on, he watched Lisa go off to flirt with an attractive bartender and glanced around the dance floor for someone of his own, his body moving to the thumping beat of the music.
As he surveyed the club, he felt a light tap on his shoulder and quickly spun around to see a familiar smirk and a fringe of mauve hair that he recognised as belonging to Val, one of Addisonâs new friends that he had met outside the club earlier that evening. His eyes were drawn to the young manâs muscular arms that were shown off by a sleeveless shirt, then up to the star tattoos adorning his neck, and finally to his eyes, which Danny noticed seemed to be a dark shade of crimson. He suddenly became very aware of his heart pounding in his chest as Val spoke.
âDance with me,â he instructed, his voice somehow perfectly clear amongst the music and surrounding dancersâ conversations. Danny stared at him for a moment, imagining those arms wrapped around him and that strong voice in his earâŠ
âIâd love to!â he replied, barely missing a beat. He took a few confident steps towards Val, draping his arms around his neck as Val wrapped his around Dannyâs waist. Despite being in a packed nightclub, Valâs hands were cool against his skin and everything other than him seemed to fade from Dannyâs view. Their bodies moved together fluidly as the rest of the world disappeared and he grew more and more mesmerised by Valâs eyes.
Valâs face moved closer to his and their cheeks rested together, Dannyâs eyes falling half shut at the sound of his voice. âGorgeous and an amazing dancer?â He gave a throaty chuckle. âI may be in love.â
âCarefulâŠâ Danny teased, âwe barely know each other.â
âI want to get to know you, Danny,â Val replied, moving his head back into Dannyâs view, capturing his gaze again. âAddison told me much about you, but her stories did not capture how truly fascinating you are⊠and how attractive,â he added, his eyes flickering down momentarily to Dannyâs neck. Danny shuddered as a shiver ran through him. âWould you like to come up to the balcony with me?â Val asked, pulling Danny harder against him, their chests pressed together. âItâs a much more⊠intimate setting. Better for conversation.â
âYes,â Danny gasped before he even had a chance to consider Valâs offer. Not that he would have come to a different answer had he thought harder about the idea. âJust for conversation, huh?â
Valâs smirk returned. âLetâs just say I adore your lack of clothes.â He ran a hand down Dannyâs chest, his fingertips leaving a cold trail in their wake. âAnd Iâd just love to take a closer look at your neck.â
A little confused, but deciding to play along, Danny pushed his hips harder against Valâs. âAre you sure my neck is the only thing you wanna see up close?â
Grinning, Val curled his fingers around Dannyâs arm and began to lead him towards a staircase across the room. âCome on, then.â
The staircase led up to a second floor, and they stepped through a doorway which opened onto a small balcony, and Danny sighed as the cool night air washed over him. The music faded to a soft pulse as Val shut the doors behind them, leaving them alone, away from the scrutiny of any other dancers who happened to also make their way to the second floor. Within seconds he had pulled Danny back into his arms and Danny pressed their lips together. He felt Valâs lips curve into a smile and the kiss quickly turned passionate, their hands roughly exploring each otherâs bodies.
âAh!â Danny suddenly pulled his head back, having pricked his tongue on something sharp. âFuck,â he muttered, his mouth filling with the taste of blood.
âIâm sorry, my bad,â Val said, his eyes alight and clearly no remorse in his expression to support his words.
âWhat was that?â Danny asked, frowning. Val moved his mouth back to the side of Dannyâs mouth, slowly kissing across his jaw and down to his neck. âVal?â
He sighed, drawing back, but keeping his arms around Danny, who gave a short glance at the closed balcony doors. âYou taste good,â Val breathed, somehow pulling him even closer.
âValâŠ?â Danny repeated, hesitantly. âWhatâs going⊠Oh!â His eyes widened as Val grinned, exposing a sharp set of fangs. âYouâre⊠Youâre a vampire?â A hand behind Dannyâs head, Val gripped his hair, tilting his head and running his thumb over the exposed skin. âThat makes senseâŠâ He swallowed, Valâs eyes capturing every movement. âAre you going to bite me?â
âYes,â came the simple reply, Valâs voice rough as he dipped his head back down towards Dannyâs neck. âMmm, I can hear your heart pounding, the blood running through your veins⊠Are you scared, Danny?â
Danny took a deep breath, feeling Valâs breath tickle his skin. âNo.â
âI donât believe you.â He could practically hear Valâs smirk now. âThis will hurt.â
âBring it on,â Danny countered, confidently, and Val paused, his eyes flicking back up to meet Dannyâs.
âYou want this?â he asked, and Danny gave a small shrug. âWell thatâs no funâŠâ
Danny let his arms wind around Valâs back, bringing their bodies closer still. âIsnât it?â It was his turn to smirk.
âYouâre impressive, Danny.â Val looked back at the sensitive skin just centimetres below his fangs. âI might just enjoy this.â
Danny closed his eyes as Val pressed his fangs against his neck, feeling the pressure of the points against his skin. As they broke through, he gasped at the flash of pain, clutching tightly at Valâs shirt. Valâs hand around the back of his neck held his head firmly in place as Danny groaned, his breaths deep. Over the next minute or so, he slowly relaxed his grip and let his hands slip down to Valâs lower back, starting to feel a little lightheaded. When Val finally released Dannyâs neck from his hand and teeth, his head fell against Valâs shoulder, and he let the vampire hold him up.
âYour blood is delicious,â Val marvelled, turning his head to lick at the blood that was still leaking lightly from the punctures in Dannyâs neck. âIâll have to keep you on tap.â
âLiterally,â Danny muttered, slowly lifting his head and bringing up a hand to touch his neck. He winced slightly at the sting, but smiled lazily. âYou look⊠rejuvenated.â
âYou donât,â Val smirked. âYouâre probably going to pass out.â
Danny shook his head, trying to ignore the way the movement made him a little dizzy. âIâll be fine. Now, do you wanna go dance more, or would you rather we go somewhere even more intimate?â
âLet me know how that works out,â Val shrugged, loosening his hold on Danny, who frowned.
âYouâre just going to leave me now?â
Val gave a short laugh. âIâve taken all I need.â
Danny pulled away from Val, irritated. âFine.â He stumbled over to the balcony doors, but collapsed heavily against them, his head spinning. Through the sound of his heart pounding in his ears, he heard Val sigh, before a strong arm wound around his waist, holding him up.
âCome on, Iâll help you home,â he offered, pulling the doors open and supporting Danny back down the stairs. âBut you owe me,â he added as they slipped out of the club. âNot that I could resist coming back to youâŠâ

Authorâs Note: Just a quick thing I wrote for my Ethan with OCD headcanon (x). I donât know how well I explained things (mostly because I already understand the stuff I tried to talk about), so I hope it all works.
If you want a song for this, I guess Obsessions by Marina and the Diamonds works well (I kinda sorta stole the title heh).
Danny woke to a loud buzzing sound. He gave a small grunt, taking a few seconds to realise that it was his phone vibrating against his nightstand. He could usually sleep through the sound, but for some reason it had woken him up this time. After another few seconds, he guessed that it was probably because the phone was still vibrating. After receiving what sounded like another two or three texts, he reached across to grab the phone, squinting as he turned the screen on.
âOh, babyâŠâ he muttered, scrolling through a dozen texts from Ethan.
âHey, how are you doing?â ⊠âSorry, I know youâre sleeping, just let me know.â ⊠âWe should catch up for coffee or something.â ⊠âI know we see each other on set, but I like checking in with you.â ⊠âI just want to make sure everythingâs okay.â ⊠âIâm sure youâre fine, donât mind me.â ⊠âBut if youâre not, please talk to me.â ⊠âOnly if you want to, though.â ⊠âIâm sorry, I donât mean to bother you.â ⊠âYou donât have to answer, sorry.â ⊠âIâll just see you tomorrow and talk to you then.â ⊠âSorry, Iâll leave you alone now.â
Danny sighed, trying to work out what to text back. He knew that Ethan was prone to over-worrying about things and that he sometimes talked himself into thinking the worst of a situation. He texted Danny at about the same time each morning, but didnât usually send so many in the middle of the night. His eyes focussed on the time, and he frowned. It was about 3:30 in the morning, and he doubted Ethan had woken up, which meant that he hadnât slept yet. Considering he was usually up before six, that gave him only about two hours. Shaking his head, Danny slipped out of bed and grabbed a t-shirt off his chair, pulling it on. Clutching his phone and keys, he stumbled towards the door of his dorm and stepped out, locking it behind him.
Yawning, he made his way to Ethanâs dorm and knocked on the door. When there was no answer after a few seconds, he tried again, still with no response. Sure that Ethan wouldnât possibly have gone to bed so soon after texting him, he slipped the key Ethan had given him into the lock and let himself in.
He immediately spotted Ethan sitting at his desk, staring at the screen of his laptop while a pair of headphones blasted a heavy beat into his ears. Danny slowly walked up to him until he was standing beside him, and reached over to push the screen of the laptop down.
Ethan jumped, shoving the headphones off and looking quickly up at Danny, his eyes wide, but shadowed with tiredness. It took him a few seconds to relax, but eventually he sat back heavily in his chair, while Danny sat on the edge of his desk.
âI'm fine,â Danny said softly. âAre you?â
Ethan was silent for a moment, looking back down at his lap, before returning his gaze to Danny. âYeah.â
Danny sighed. âEthan, there's a very inviting and unused bed over there, and it's calling your name.â
Ethan shrugged, his face falling. âSorry, sugar, I'm not really in the mood right nowâŠâ
Danny gave a small laugh. âWe both have to get up to work in a few hours, baby. Do you really think that's what I'm asking? You need to sleep.â
âSorry,â Ethan murmured, looking down again.
âHeyâŠâ Danny leant forward. âWhat do you have to be sorry about?â He placed a comforting hand on Ethan's right shoulder.
Ethan instantly pulled away, pushing his chair out so that he was out of Danny's reach. He squeezed his eyes shut and grabbed his left shoulder. After a moment, he also grabbed his right shoulder and took a few deep breaths.
âEthan...?â Danny began, slowly getting to his feet and taking a step towards him. âAre you--â
âDon't touch me,â Ethan said quickly, his eyes snapping open. âPlease, DannyâŠâ
Danny reluctantly sat back down, worry written into his face. âIt's okay, baby, I won't,â he assured him. âWhat's wrong? Is there anything I can do?â
Ethan gave a small shake of his head, biting his lip. He finally relaxed his hands, placing them carefully in his lap. He didn't look at Danny as he took several long, deep breaths.
âWill sleep make you feel better?â Danny asked unsurely.
âI can't sleep,â Ethan replied quietly. Danny waited for him to continue, and it was a long moment before he did. âI keep... I-I justâŠâ He sighed, his voice small. âI'm too scared, Danny.â
âOf what?â
Ethan finally looked back up at him, and Danny took in the complete exhaustion in his expression. âDon't worry about it, Danny, there's nothing you can do.â
âSomehow Iâm still worrying, Ethan.â Ethan closed his eyes again, rubbing his hands slowly up and down his thighs. âI understand if you donât want to talk about it, but if you think you canât because I donât want to hear about it or I wonât want to help, please know that thatâs not true.â
Ethan shook his head. âYou wouldnât like me very much if I told you.â
âWhat?!â Danny exclaimed. âLook, Ethan, youâre by far one of the best men I know. I donât know what this is about, but I can assure you that fear doesnât make you a bad person. Whatever it is, you donât have to go through it by yourself. Thatâs why Iâm here.â
âI⊠Iâm not as good as you think I amâŠâ Ethan mumbled. âI get these⊠these thoughts, and⊠I donât know how to get rid of them.â
âBad thoughts?â Danny asked, and Ethan nodded.
âI donât want to hurt you.â He put his head in his hands. âOr anyone. And⊠and I donât want to dieâŠâ
Ethanâs breath shook, and Danny fought the urge to run over to him and pull him into a hug.
âOh god, EthanâŠâ he breathed. âTheyâre that bad?â He watched Ethan struggle not to cry for the next few second. âIs there anything that makes them any better?â
Ethan gave a small shrug, still covering his face. âHaving someone with me usually helps.â
Danny nodded. âThen Iâll stay with you, okay?â
âBut⊠but what if IâŠâ Ethan took a deep breath. âWhat if I hurt you?â
âDo you want to?â Danny asked.
âOf course not!â
âAnd have you hurt someone because of these thoughts before?â
âNo, butâŠâ he trailed off.
âEthan, itâs clear that you donât want to be thinking these things and that you donât agree with them, so youâre not a bad person. You make me feel safe and I trust you,â Danny said. âIf me being here makes you feel better, then Iâll be here, okay?â
Ethan shrugged again. âItâs just⊠Itâs not only the thoughts that are the problem.â He finally looked back at Danny, his eyes reddened. âI⊠I have obsessive-compulsive disorder.â He paused, as if waiting for Danny to say something, but he didnât. âUm⊠And, uh, this stuff is all part of it. M-most people think that OCD is just making things neat and arranging things, but thereâs so much more to it than thatâŠâ
âI know,â Danny said quietly, and Ethan gave him the smallest hint of a smile. âI canât stand it when people use it like that⊠as an adjective, I mean. I know itâs a lot harder than that.â
Ethan nodded. âI hate it so much⊠There are a lot of aspects to it, but I think the two that are the hardest to deal with are the thoughts and⊠and how when I feel some kind of sensation on some part of my body, I have to recreate it in the same place on the other side.â
Danny have him a slightly confused look. âWhat do you mean?â
Ethan sighed. âLike⊠If I bump my right hand or something, for example, I have to bump my left hand in the same place too, or it just feels wrong. Sometimes it gets really bad, especially when I canât recreate it exactly. It drives me insane,â he said, kicking at the base of his chair with his heel. He quickly repeated the kick with his other foot and groaned. âItâs sometimes just really hard to deal with. I donât know how to describe how it feels, but itâs just wrong and I canât handle it.â
âIs that why you donât want me to touch you?â
He nodded. âIâm sorry, DannyâŠâ
âDonât be!â Danny said quickly. âObviously itâs not something youâre doing on purpose. Iâll do anything to make this easier for you to deal with. Why⊠why havenât you asked me not to before?â
âItâs usually not this bad,â Ethan explained. âBut there are times when everything is just awful. The thoughts, the sensations⊠Everything just gets too much. I canât sleep because every time I lie down, I feel like something badâs gonna happen, even if itâs something stupid like the ceilingâs gonna fall in on me. But I canât do much else, because using my phone or my computer involve touching them, and thereâs nothing productive I can do thatâs completely symmetrical. All I can do is sit here and try to block everything out with music and hope I just get too tired to stay awake any longer. But⊠but youâre okay with this?â
Danny coughed incredulously. âEthan, Iâm not gonna stop caring about you, or anything, because youâve got OCD. I want to help you through this as best I can, but I understand if thereâs not much I can do. Regardless, Iâm here for you, and I always will be. Just let me know if thereâs ever anything that will make it easier, yeah? You donât have to worry about what I think of you, because I think youâre incredible. This doesnât change that.â
âBut youâre such a physical person, Danny,â Ethan countered. âI donât want to make this too hard for you, especially when youâve got other people--â
âEthan.â Danny stood up and took a few steps closer to him. âIf you ever need me to not touch you, whether itâs because of your OCD or anything else, I wonât touch you, okay?â He crouched down in front of Ethan. âI care about you, Ethan, not touching you. You said itâs not always this bad, so if you want, I can ask before I touch you.â
âWhat, every timeâŠ?â
Danny shrugged, smiling. âWhy not? Iâm sure weâll find a way to make it fun.â
Ethanâs cheeks reddened slightly as he smiled back. âIf⊠if youâre okay with that, then thatâd be great.â
âEthan, it doesnât matter if Iâm okay with it. Now that youâve told me this, it would be awful of me to touch you if I knew it might cause you so much distress. Youâd have every right to cut me out of your life if I kept trying to force that on you.â
Ethan looked at him for a few seconds, before finally speaking.âStand up and hold still,â he said quietly, gradually getting to his feet as Danny did the same. He moved his hands to Dannyâs upper arms, keeping them still for a few seconds. Danny breathed slowly as their eyes met, and the situation suddenly felt far more intimate than anything they had ever shared. He didnât move as Ethan trailed his hands up to his shoulders and neck, then behind his head. His eyes fell closed as Ethan leaned in and pressed their lips together. After a moment, Ethan pulled back, smiling. âThank you.â
âAnytime,â Danny said, winking.
Ethan gave a small laugh, his smile fading slightly. âUhh⊠You couldnât wink with the other eye, could youâŠ?â
âOh!â Danny quickly winked with his other eye.
Ethan blushed slightly. âSorry. Just⊠when itâs this bad, sometimes things other people do bother me a bitâŠâ
âThatâs okay,â Danny assured him, then tilted his head towards Ethanâs. Taking the hint, Ethan kissed him again, his lips moving softly against Dannyâs. âMm, this is niceâŠâ Danny breathed when Ethan pulled away again. âBut itâs really late. Or early, I guess. How are you feeling about sleep now?â
Ethan shrugged. âI guess I could give it a go.â He took his hands away from Dannyâs head and rubbed them on his jacket for a few seconds. âUm⊠Iâd appreciate if you stayed, but also if you still didnât really touch meâŠâ
Danny nodded. âYeah, of course. Only⊠well, you know I get a bit clingy when I wake up.â
Ethan chuckled. âThatâs fine, I should feel better once Iâve had some sleep. I usually do.â
âIf youâre sure,â Danny smiled.
They settled into the bed, Danny lying on his side to face Ethan, who lay flat on his back.
Ethan took a few deep breaths. âI wish I could hold your hand,â he whispered.
âYouâll be okay, Ethan, I promise,â Danny replied. âIâll make sure nothing happens to you.â
He watched Ethan nod and close his eyes. âThanks, Danny.â

Affairs of the Heart
âI now pronounce you husband and husband. You may now kiss your spouse.â
Those thirteen words are enough to send many of the excited guests at Danny Nelsen and Ethan Blakeâs wedding into a round of applause and cheers as the two stood at the altar.
However, not everyone was completely happy.
By the time the reception kicked off, Thomas Hunt was already at the open bar.
Screw seating arrangements, Thomas thought. Iâd rather be miserable alone than in front of his face. He took a sip of his first scotch of the night â the first of many, he was sure of it.
Thomas honestly didnât want to come to this wedding. Not at all. The thought of being at Dannyâs wedding, of all places, on a Saturday night where he could drink alone instead absolutely drove him insane. Much like everyone else at this reception, he was extremely happy that Danny found his happiness with Ethan.
He was just jealous that he didnât have his own happiness.
Loneliness is a hard thing to swallow when youâre a few years from the age of forty.
In seconds flat, Thomas chugged the scotch sans ice and put the glass back on the counter. âIâll have another,â he stated to the bartender, who nodded and took his empty glass. He caught the drink when the bartender slid it back.
âAlready going for the hard shit, huh?â someone spoke up as they sat next to Thomas, whom he discovered was a mutual friend of both him and Danny: Chris Winters. âI shoulda known Iâd find you here.â
Thomas shrugged. âOld habits die hard.â He sighed.
Chris sighed. âDonât worry, Iâll be joining you very soon in that regard.â
They sat in silence for a moment after Chris ordered his first glass of wine, not sure what to say to each other.
âI can only imagine how you must be feeling right now,â Thomas finally spoke. âYou proposed to Danny, for Godâs sakeâŠâ
âWell, you were Dannyâs professor,â Chris retorted. âYou know him almost as well as Ethan does. Our chances were pretty even.â
Thomas shook his head. âNo way in hell. Your chances were far better than mine ever wereâŠâ
Chris placed a hand on Thomasâs shoulder in an attempt to comfort him. âDonât be so hard on yourself, Thomas. Itâs only gonna eat at you. Like itâs done to meâŠâ He sighed. âI donât want Danny to come over here and see us moping. Todayâs supposed to be a day to celebrate two people getting married â even if itâs an ex.â He smiled, grabbing his drink. âSo you and I are gonna drown out our sorrows with alcohol tonight and have no regrets about coming here. Got it?â
Sighing again, Thomas nodded. âOkay. No more feeling sorry for ourselves.â
âPinky promise?â Chris held the appendage out as he held his glass.
Thomas smiled and rolled his eyes. âYouâre such a dork.â
Chris shrugged. âPart of my charm, I guess. Now, are we doing this or not?â
Laughing a little despite himself, Thomas wrapped his pinky finger around Chrisâs. âOkay, okay.â
The actor nodded, holding up his wine glass. âCheers to a new start.â
Clinking their glasses together, Thomas nodded again. âTo a new start, indeed.â
Both of them had to admit: the night went better than they hoped it would.
As they expected, the first dance for the newlyweds was a tearjerker - Ethan's own brother Ezra playing the song himself. Berry gave a beautiful speech as best man, and Danny had a special dance with his sister Katie.
Once the actual party portion is finally underway, Thomas and Chris have each had one glass of champagne and three glasses of their normal drinks - enough for them both to be on a high but still mostly coherent. They have the most fluid conversation as the party rolled on.
"You're probably gonna say no," Chris began, "but... do you wanna dance?"
Thomas nodded. "I'd be honored."
Chris smiled wide as he stood up and offered his hand to Thomas, who took it with vigor.
Both men walked to the dance floor, staying right on the outer fray of the crowd. Chris wrapped his arms around Thomas's waist as the professor draped his arms over the actor's shoulders.
"Has anyone ever told you," Chris began as they swayed to the music, "how despite your other beautiful qualities - that jawline, for example..."
Thomas rolled his eyes. "That joke got old years ago. Your point?"
Chris sighed. "Has anyone ever told you how beautiful your eyes were?"
Suddenly caught off-guard, Thomas blinked. "I-I, uh... No."
"Well they are." Chris gave a smile. "It's like looking into two indescribable gems."
Thomas blushed.
Chris chuckled and brought Thomas closer. "All of you is a work of art."
Blushing brighter, Thomas leaned his forehead onto the younger man's forehead.
They stayed silent for a moment before Chris pulled Thomas to his chest and kissed him gently. Both of them melt, not expecting it to be as sweet and as natural as it was.
Chris pulled away, smiling with a bright blush on his face as another slow song began to play.
I got a funny feeling
The moment that your lips touched mine
All Thomas could do for a moment was pause, processing what had just happened.
Something shot right through me
My heart skipped a beat in time
There's a different feel about you tonight
It's got me thinkin' lots of crazy things
I even think I saw a flash of light
It felt like electricity
"Thomas?" Chris asked quietly.
Snapping out of his trance, Thomas blushed a bright red.
You shouldn't kiss me like this
Unless you mean it like that
'Cause I'll just close my eyes
And I won't know where I'm at
We'll get lost on this dance floor
Spinnin' around and around
And around and around
"Did I do something wrong?"
Thomas shook his head. "No, of course not."
Chris brushed back Thomas's hair with his hand. "Is this... something you want?"
"Yes," Thomas replied without a second thought. "But let's just start with tonight."
"Sounds perfect."
They're all watchin' us now
They think we're falling in love
They'd never believe we're just friends
When you kiss me like this
I think you mean it like that
If you do, baby, kiss me again
Everybody swears we make the perfect pair
But dancing is as far as it goes
Oh, you've never moved me
Quite the way you moved me tonight
I just wanted you to know
They're silent again for a good chunk of time before Thomas locked eyes with Chris again, getting lost in them.
"I want you, Thomas," Chris spoke. "So badly..."
Smiling, Thomas leaned his forehead on Chris's again. "For tonight... you've got me."
Chris smiled, pulling Thomas into another kiss, this one more passionate than the last.
I just wanted you to know
Thomas instantly melted into Chris's hold, for once his inhibitions telling him it was okay to be weak.
And boy, was he ever.
Closing his eyes, Thomas let Chris guide him through the dance as they kissed, losing himself in the moment.
You shouldn't kiss me like this
Unless you mean it like that
'Cause I'll just close my eyes
And I won't know where I'm at
We'll get lost on this dance floor
Spinnin' around and around
And around and around
They're all watchinâ us now
They think we're falling in love
They'd never believe we're just friends
When you kiss me like this
I think you mean it like that
If you do, baby, kiss me again
Kiss me again
Chris pulled away, and Thomas looked on with slightly hazy eyes.
âI know a place around here where we can be alone,â Chris told him quietly. ââŠif you want.â
Thomas nodded. âThe music is getting a little too much for me, anyway.â
Chris led the way the way as they made themselves scarce.
Before either of them know it, the night is over.
They decided to go to Chrisâs hotel room, and although Thomas couldnât properly explain it, it felt like⊠home to him.
âYou tired yet?â Chris asked, shedding off the suit jacket he was wearing.
âA bit, yes,â Thomas answered as he took off his dress shoes. âI think it took a toll on both of us on top of how we were feeling already.â
Chris nodded, going into his suitcase and pulling out several items of clothing âI have some stuff you can wear. You obviously donât wanna sleep in that suit, right?â
Thomas shook his head. âOf course not, but you really didnât have to-â
âI insist.â Chris handed Thomas a set of clothes. âGo ahead and use the bathroom. Iâll change out here.â
âFair enough.â
When both men are finished changing, Thomas sat on the bed and fiddled with his fingers, unsure what to do with himself.
Chris sighed, sitting on the bed next to Thomas. âLetâs just get some sleep, okay? I donât want to push you to do anything, Iâll just go sleep on the couch, if that makes you more-â
Thomas placed a hand on the actorâs. âI donât think I could sleep by myself tonight⊠Iâve done it for so long that I donât know how much longer I can do it...â
âI understand.â Chris stood up and got into the bed. âDonât feel pressured to do anything that you donât want to, okay?â
Silence lingers for a few seconds before Thomas replied with an, âOkay.â He joined Chris in the bed, trying to get comfortable as he laid on his side.
Chris pulled up the covers, draping them over the both of them.
Thomas curled up under the blankets, trying to get warm.
Wrapping an arm around Thomasâs waist, Chris pulled Thomas closer. âIs this better?â
âYes⊠but nothing more than this,â Thomas answered. âI want whatever our relationship is to go slowly. Iâm not ready for even any physical intimacy yetâŠâ
Chris kissed Thomas on the cheek. âDonât worry, I thought the same thing. But I just really wanted to spend tonight with you in general more than anything. Just being here with you tonight is enough.â
Smiling, Thomas closed his eyes. âSleep well, Chris.â
âYou too, Thomas.â Chris placed a kiss on the side of Thomasâs head as they both drift off to sleep.

"It was awful nice of you to take me to Blitz for my twenty-first birthday, Ethan," Addison Sinclair said to her best friend Ethan Blake as they walked down Rodeo Drive.
"Don't sweat it, Addi," Ethan replied. "Someone's gotta make sure you don't get too wild in there."
Addison giggled and put a hand on Ethan's shoulder.
Ethan paused in his tracks, blinking a few times in both surprise and slight unwarned agitation.
"Oh, I'm so sorry, EthanâŠ" Addison quietly spoke as they continued - although a bit slower - down the street, nearing the club. "M-Make sure you have a little fun, too, okay?"
"Don't worry about me, Addi," Ethan told her as they reached the entrance and realized that there was a terribly long line. "Crash must already be inside the place."
Addison smiled. "I wouldn't doubt it."
They waited for about fifteen minutes before they got inside Blitz, finding their friend Crash Yamaguchi already at a table.
"Hey, guys!" Crash yelled out with a wave. "I was wondering when you'd get here!"
Ethan smiled and sat down at one end of the table. "Hey, Crash."
"I already ordered all three of us each a glass of champagne."
"Sweet! Keeping up tradition. I like it."
Addison giggled again. "You guys are too sweet. At least let me pay for one round before the night's over."
Ethan sighed but gave a small grin. "Okay, birthday girl. Whatever you want."
"Mind if I join the birthday girl for this little celebration?" a voice asked from the other side of the table.
"O-Ohmygod, you're Chris Winters from The Last Lumberjack!" Addison replied with her eyes wide.
Crash gave a thumbs up. "Of course you can join us, Mr. Winters!"
"You guys can just call me Chris," the movie star replied as he sat down across from Ethan.
Speaking of the agent, Ethan was nervous as hell. Things were already not going to plan because he hadn't accounted for Chris Winters, of all people, to join them for Addison's birthday. He tapped 'S.O.S.' in Morse code three times with his index finger, signaling the table that he was quite a bit overwhelmed with the new company.
Crash raised an eyebrow. "Oh crapâŠ"
"What happened?" Addison asked as she was pulled from her conversation with Chris. When she saw Ethan, she realized. "Oh, um⊠Chris, you may need to go for a little while. It's, uhâŠ"
"Oh man, I'm sorry about this," Chris finally said as saw how Ethan was reacting. "I-I understand. My brother Tyler gets like this too." He stood up, looking right at the young agent. "Is it because I'm sitting here with you guys and messing up your seating?"
Ethan nodded, blushing slightly.
"Hey, it's okay, buddy. I totally understand. How about I sit at the table next to you guys and talk to you instead?"
"That⊠that sounds much better."
Chris nodded, sitting at a stool next to the adjacent table. "There we go. Anything else that I need to be cautious of?"
Addison looked to Ethan. "Can he pay for the last round of drinks, Ethan? I'll pay for the third because you said anyone outside of the equation has to pay last."
Ethan gave a small nod as he returned a bit back to his normal state.
"Okay, I think we're good now," Crash said with a small smile.
"That's good because I really wanna dance off this champagne nowâŠ" Addison giggled and blushed softly.
Crash hopped out of his seat. "I'm game! C'mon, Addi." He grabbed the blonde's hand and led her to the dance floor.
Ethan sighed, taking a sip of his champagne.
"You feeling better now, Ethan?" Chris asked just above the bass of the song blasting through the speakers.
Smiling shyly, Ethan nodded. "You know, I was pissed when you came over because the funk of the group changed, but⊠I'm so glad you understand and I totally didn't creep you out."
Chris shook his head. "I'd never be creeped out by that." He stood up. "Do you wanna go up there and dance with me?"
Ethan nodded. "I'd like that." He stood up and followed Chris closer to the disc jockey booth. "Can we go dance near the wall, if you don't mind? Being mid-dance-floor makes me a bit claustrophobic."
"Yeah, definitely." Chris kept quiet for a moment before he said, "You decide whether you lead or not. I don't want to touch you⊠somewhere I shouldn't."
Nodding again, Ethan took a deep breath as he tried to keep his cool. He waited until the current song was over before wrapping an arm around Chris as the next song began. His hands were a little clammy, Chris noticed.
"You okay?" Chris asked the younger man.
Ethan nodded slightly. "Yeah, just nervous, I suppose."
Chris smiled. "It's okay, I understand." He paused. "Move my hands where you want them to go."
"It's fine. Go ahead and put them wherever you want to." Ethan winked.
Laughing, Chris wrapped his arms around Ethan's waist as they started to sway to the slow song that was playing. "You're really cute, you know that?"
Ethan smiled and blushed a bright red. "Y-You too, Chris."
Neither of them could stop smiling the entire song as they quietly swayed and got lost in each other's eyes.
Before they know it, the song ended, and they stayed in position.
One of the ways Addison could tell that Ethan intuitively liked someone was if he clicked his heels twice, so when she saw that Ethan do so after dancing with Chris, she smiled and breathed a sigh of relief.
And then, with a soft closing of his eyes, Ethan kissed Chris.
Chris smiled into the kiss, holding Ethan a little tighter and closing his eyes as the agent hummed in pleasure.
Ethan slowly pulled away from Chris, and they both blushed a bright red, goofy smiles still on both of their faces as they stood inches apart.
When the night was over, Chris waited with the group of three as they tried to hail a taxi.
"Is it gonna⊠set you off if I ride with you in the cab?" Chris asked Ethan.
Ethan bit his lip and nodded. "Yeah, I'm sorry⊠Tonight was awesome, though. You really made my night, Chris."
Chris leaned over, kissing Ethan on the cheek. "I could say the same for you."
"As Pauly D from Jersey Shore would say, 'cabs a' heeya'!" Crash let out.
Ethan sighed. "Damn⊠I gotta goâŠ"
Chris frowned and kissed the agent's forehead. "I guess I'll see you around, then?"
Nodding, Ethan saw Addison waving him over as she got into the cab. "Yeah, I'll see you later." He tucked a piece of paper into Chris's jacket. "Call me, okay?"
"Oh yeah, I definitely will."
Ethan smiled and grabbed Chris's hand, kissing the actor on the lips before walking off and into the cab.
Chris waved, smiling like an idiot and watching Ethan as he smiled like an idiot and waved back.
The cab slowly pulled away, and all Chris could do was watch it go, hoping he didn't throw Ethan completely off tonight.
Something told him that this was just the beginning of something beautiful.

âSo, tell me where it is weâre going again?â twenty-two-year-old Amy Seville asked as she walked with her uncle Thomas Hunt across Hollywood Universityâs lush greenspace.
âRichard Sheridan invited me to lunch with him,â Thomas replied, adjusting his messenger bag. âHeâs bringing Aria, and he invited me to bring someone along as well. I would have picked Bree or Kane, but theyâre both busy with Karlie today.â
Amy nodded. âI understand.â She smiled. âThanks for letting me tag along. I havenât hung out with Aria in weeks.â
Thomas smiled as they reached a Starbucks that was fairly quiet for a Saturday afternoon. âCoffee frappucino, right?â
âYes, sir.â
Aria and her father Richard sat a at window booth, sharing a laugh over a story about Lisa and Ilyriaâs new-found sisterhood as Thomas and Amy walked in.
âHi!â Aria exclaimed, quickly jumping out of her seat in the booth next to her father and rushing over to hug Amy tightly.
âItâs so good to see you, Aria,â Amy replied, hugging Aria back.
âYou too!â Aria let go, looking up at Thomas. âHandshake or hug, Professor?â
Thomas shrugged. âEither is fine with me.â
Standing up on her toes, Aria wrapped her arms around the older man before letting go just as fast. âWe already got your drinks.â
âOh?â
âYeah, we already paid.â Aria bounced a little as she led them to the booth. âCâmon, take a seat!â
Amy giggled slightly and shook Richardâs hand as Thomas slid into the window side of the booth. âNice to meet you, Mr. Sheridan.â
âLikewise,â Richard said with a nod and a smile. âNo Bree this time?â
âShe sends her condolences, Richard,â Thomas stated to clear the air. âBusy with the baby.â
âAh, family first.â Richard pulled Aria next to him and kissed her cheek softly. âI understand completely.â
âDaddyâŠâ Aria groaned.
Richard chuckled. âDonât be embarrassed, pumpkin.â
Aria blushed slightly and pulled herself only an inch or so away. âToo late for that.â
âSorry, princess.â Richard patted his daughterâs shoulder, rubbing it gently as she sat back upright before he looked to Amy. âYouâre Thomasâs niece, correct?â
Nodding, Amy smiled. âYeah, that I am. I hope to be the next big producer someday.â
Richard chuckled. âThereâs a lot of you Sevilles around campus, arenât there?â He gestured his hand in almost a pinching formation. âEspecially six little ones?â
âOh, here we goâŠâ Thomas replied with a smile and an eye-roll.
Amy sighed. âYes, the Chipmunks and Chipettes are my semi-adopted little siblings.â
Bouncing a little again, Aria squealed. âThatâs so cute! Didnât they used to live out here instead of New York?â
âYeah, but thatâs a long story. Theyâre back here for the end of the semester and the summer.â
Aria squealed again and turned to her father. âCan we meet them?! Please, Daddy?â
Richard laughed. âOf course you can, sweetheart! Anything you want!â
âOh, thank you, Daddy!â
âHow about you and Amy talk about that while we all head over to the rose gardens across town?â
âYes, please!â
Amy nodded. âSounds like a plan.â
Thomas insisted on driving, knowing that Richard was of a certain age and not wanting either of the girls to drive because he wanted to be a gentleman.
Amy and Aria were both quite talkative enough for the four of them, making the awkward silence between Thomas and Richard much less noticeable because they each at least had input into the conversation despite not actually talking to each other.
Once they arrive at the rose gardens, the four of them exited the car.
Richard looked in Amy and Ariaâs general direction. âYou can go your own way, girls,â he told them. âWe donât mind.â
Aria nodded, pulling Amy by the hand and rushing over to the entrance of the gardens.
Thomas slowly followed behind them with Richard, putting his hands into his pockets and taking a breath.
âItâs⊠Itâs been quite a while, hasnât it?â Richard finally spoke to break the silence.
âYes,â Thomas answered. âItâs been a long time since you and I have been by ourselves together.â
Richard, without a care in the world for appearances at this point, linked his arm around Thomasâs as they entered the gardens themselves. âYou donât mind, do you?â
Thomas blushed but shook his head in response.
Smiling, Richard led Thomas to a very secluded spot in the garden with a bench and a small fountain. âFeels just like our good old days â doesnât it, Thomas?â
Not giving a response this time, Thomas kept his focus straight.
Richardâs smile immediately faded as they both sat down on the stone bench. âWe need to talk about our little⊠affair, donât we?â
Thomas turned away. âWhat is there to talk about?â he asked in response. âIt was a short fling that you wanted during your teaching time at Hollywood University. You were my professor, and I was your student. It wasnât supposed to happen because it would ruin our integrity and reputations.â
âGrace has long since forgiven me for that,â Richard explained, âbut the only two people that havenât forgiven us are ourselves.â
Richard was right. Thomas hadnât forgiven the older man or even himself for what happened between them all those years ago, and now here they were finally able to talk it out without anyone overhearing.
Thomas sighed, turning back around. âIâm sorry, Richard.â
âNo, Iâm the one that should be sorry about the whole situation,â Richard replied. âIâm the one who pushed us deeper into the situation.â
âWe canât go back to that relationship. You have your wife, and I have Bree and Kane.â Thomas sighed. ââŠbut I donât want to lose you as a friend.â
Richard smiled. âYouâre not going to lose me, Thomas. And I was going to advise us to do the very same thing.â He kissed Thomas on the cheek. âThough I can still do a few of those every now and again without anyone suspecting a thing.â
Gasping softly, Thomas blushed slightly. âCome on, Richard, not here.â
âYouâre still just as handsome as you were in your college days.â
Thomas blushed brighter. âRichard!â
Richard laughed. âOkay, Iâll stop. But I mean what I said.â
âDaddy!â Aria chirped from the entrance to the secluded area. âDoes next week sound okay for a meet and greet with the Chipmunks and Chipettes?â
The older man smiled wide. âThat sounds perfect, cupcake.â
Aria cheered, hugging Amy tightly. âOh, Iâm so excited!â
âIâll have to join you for that,â Thomas admitted. âThey are staying with meâŠâ
Richard clapped Thomas on the shoulder. âSounds fantastic. Maybe we should hit the local mini-golf course for this get-together.â
âThat can be arranged,â Amy told him. âSay, next Saturday?â
âWonderful!â Richard stood up, linking arms with Aria. âLetâs head to that little malt shop downtown.â
âYou mean the ice cream parlor?â Thomas asked with an eyebrow raised.
Richard laughed and nodded. âJust testing you. Now, come, letâs go and â how do you kids say it these days? âBlunt this joint?ââ
Unable to control herself, Amy laughed. âItâs âblow this joint,â Mr. Sheridan.
Thomas laughed as well and shook his head.
Aria giggled as they walked out of the gardens together. âOh, DaddyâŠâ

Guardian Angels
I, Thomas Orson Hunt, am not the person everyone thinks that I am.
Everyone seems to think that I'm one of the most esteemed professors at Hollywood University. I'm not really sure if 'esteemed' is quite the right word. 'Infamous' definitely seems more fitting to my character, if you ask me.
Thomas quietly shut the door to his apartment as he re-entered it one Friday afternoon. He placed his messenger bag down, slid off his dress shoes, and took off his signature beige button-up sweater. For a quick moment, he fiddled with his satin navy-blue tie and debated on just undoing it just to wrap it around his neck in one grand pull.
What a way to go, Thomas thought sadly, ruining one of my ties with my own bloodâŠ
He sighed, unfastening his tie and walking into his bedroom. Tossing the tie on his bureau and unbuttoning the top few buttons of his dress shirt, he walked into his bathroom.
There were bags under Thomasâs eyes - which pretty much anyone could tell even with the third-of-a-bottle of concealer that he had on his face. Against his better judgement, he reached for a facecloth, running it under the warm water before wiping off his face and his revealed arms. He kept his eyes closed, knowing that the second that he opened them, he wasnât going to be himself again for the rest of the night.
Although that was debatable from this low that he was already at, so what would this really do to him other than make it inevitably worse?
Letting out a breath, Thomas dropped the now ruined facecloth into the trash can between the toilet and the sink before opening his eyes slowly.
Thomas is met with the exact image he expected to: self-inflicted bruises still covering his face â even after two weeks, a still-visible scar right in front of his left ear, and several bruises and cuts up his arms.
For once, Thomas didnât cry at the sight of the damages he had done to himself. He simply shook his head as he exited the bathroom.
Memories started to flood his already out-of-sync mind, and in an attempt to make himself feel better, he turned on the radio to see if something upbeat would play.
Unfortunately, no such luck.
Say something
Iâm giving up on youâŠ
Thomas sighed sadly, sitting down on the couch as his mind had started to drift further into this irrational emotional state. More memories bombarded him â so many that he couldnât really focus on them in order as they all fluidly ran together and out of order.
What immediately came to his mind was the very last night he was with Bree â over a year ago now.
Bree found a note from someone else Thomas was âseeingâ (although it was only one date to turn him down), and⊠and he caved right in, telling her that he was going to make too many mistakes for her to want to keep him.
âŠso he left.
And I am feeling so small
It was over my head
I know nothing at all
Thomas still hasnât forgiven himself for doing that. He spent every single day over the fourteen months thinking of her and instantly starting to cry because of the terrible decision he made.
And I will stumble and fall
Iâm still learning to love
Just learning to crawl
Say something
Iâm giving up on youâŠ
He couldnât live like this any longer.
And I will swallow my pride
Youâre the one that I love
Iâm saying goodbye
Thomas gulped, only one thing on his mind that could end this once and for all.
He stood up quickly and walked into his small kitchen, sliding a hand over the wooden utensil drawerâs handle. Unable to stop himself, he grabbed one of the sharper knives from the rightmost side. His focus is so narrow that he doesnât realize that someone is knocking on the door.
Feeling numb, Thomas held the blade in his hand, gripping it tightly in his palm just to feel the sensation of holding something for what could possibly be the last time.
Thomas doesnât hear the door open as he brought the knife to his neck, about to press it in.
Another hand quickly grabbed Thomasâs, just before he can do anything that heâll definitely regret later.
Stopping in his tracks, Thomas slowly turned his head to see Breeâs friend Kane gripping the outside of his hand. Bree is behind him, eyes widened in fear and tears rolling down her face.
That makes Thomas finally break down. He placed the knife on the counter, moving his hand out of Kaneâs grip and rushing into his bedroom with tears in his eyes.
He collapsed onto the bed and curled up on his side under the covers of his bed as he heard a knock on his bedroom door.
âP-Please donât come in,â Thomas pleaded. âI-I donât want either of you to see me like thisâŠâ
Bree immediately rushed into the room â despite what Thomas had just said â as she was overcome with her own emotions, crawling into the bed next to Thomas and leaning her head into his chest and placing a hand over his heart.
Kane laid down on the other side of Thomas, rubbing his back and crying a few silent tears of his own as he pulled both Bree and Thomas even closer to him.
None of them spoke for what felt like hours as they all cried and held onto each other for dear life, and by the time one of them does speak, sunset has already begun.
âI forgive you,â Bree finally whispered before kissing Thomas lightly on the lips, wiping away her own tears before wiping his.
Thomas only nodded in response, kissing her on the forehead and shifting slightly so that he was more comfortable.
All of them are silent as night fell and the stars had slowly brightened.
Kane wrapped an arm around Thomasâs waist. âYou two still awake?â he whispered.
Bree made a âmhmâ sound as she looked up at Kane.
Thomas nodded slowly, wiping away the last of his tears for now. âYeah⊠Iâm still awake.â
âI just⊠I wanted to say that Iâm sorry.â
âŠWhat?
Kane took a deep breath. âIâm really sorry for beating the crap out of you that night before the day you left. I just couldnât control myself and-â
âI donât blame you,â Thomas replied. âYou were defending Bree. I deserved it.â
âNo, Thomas,â Bree answered. âYou didnât deserve it.â
Thomas turned around to face Kane and took a deep breath, not saying anything for a moment.
Kane bit his lip, locking his brown eyes with Thomasâs blue-gray ones. âYou deserve better, and weâre going to prove it.â He gently pushed Thomas down so that he was laying on his back before leaning over him slightly. âYouâre⊠youâre okay with this, rightâŠ?â
Realizing what Kane had meant, a blush tinted Thomasâs cheeks before he nodded slowly.
âAre you sure, Thomas?â Bree asked again with doubt in her voice.
Thomas nodded again. âIâm absolutely sure.â
âOkay, but if at any time you get uncomfortable, tell us to stop and we will.â
Thomas nodded again, the blush fading away slowly.
Kane slowly tucked his right arm under Thomasâs neck as he laid on his right side. âJust close your eyes for us, sugar.â
Without any hesitation, Thomasâs eyes closed.
Slowly, Bree moved her right hand so it went under Thomasâs shirt, gently brushing over the sensitive areas of the professorâs chest.
Thomas gasped, arching his back slightly before getting used to the touch and relaxing into it.
Kane smiled at Thomas softly, moving his left hand under Thomasâs jeans and going under even more before finally reaching the area he wanted. He brushed a finger alongside Thomasâs shaft from under his underwear.
Feeling that sensation alone made Thomas quiver, and when Kane had fully grabbed him and started to stroke him, he melted into the touch. His body went limp as he laid underneath them, his breathing starting to get faster.
Bree leaned down next to Thomasâs ear as her fingers still hovered over his chest. âI love you,â she whispered. âI never stopped loving you.â
Thomasâs heart skipped a beat, the ecstasy in him starting to become overwhelming as they both sped up. âI love you too,â he managed to reply between panted breaths.
Kane slowly leaned down next to Thomasâs other ear. âYou do deserve better than you think you do, Thomas,â he told him. âAnd⊠if youâre willing, all three of us can be together.â
Nodding quickly, Thomas almost reached his climax.
âWe love you so much, sugar,â Kane continued. âBoth of us do.â
Thomas had been used to hearing Bree tell him that, but the fact that Kane for once had told him something he had heard for years finally pushed him over the edge. He sunk a little further into the mattress when he came down from his high, his mind drifting for a moment before he pulled Bree into his chest. âDid⊠you mean what you said about the three of us entering a group relationship?â
Kane nodded, kissing Thomas on the cheek. âEvery word.â
Bree yawned softly, curling into Thomas and slowly closing her eyes.
Thomas felt two pairs of arms wrap around him as he felt himself start to drift off to sleep. âI couldnât ask for anything more.â
Smiling softly again, Kane leaned over and lightly kissed Thomas on the lips, feeling the three of them huddle closer together instinctively. âGet some rest, okay? Weâre getting you checked out in the morning, but we all need our sleep.â
âOf course.â Thomas closed his eyes. âThank you⊠both of you. For everything.â
Kane kissed his cheek. âAnything for you.â He rested his hands around Thomasâs waist. âGânight, sugar.â
Thomas, for the first time that night, actually smiled. ââNight.â
Within moments, all three of them were asleep and closer than ever before.

The annoying sound was coming from his kitchen sink but he didnât get up and do something about it. Friday nights were usually reserved for taking a certain someone out for dinner or a casual get together in his living room for movie marathons. But now he was just lounging on his leather sofa, wearing his rolled-cuff gray polo with a pair of faded slacks, the most casual clothes he had in his home. On the coffee table, the usual steaming cup of chamomile tea was replaced by a shot glass that was half full and two bottles of scotch that was emptied before it was even dark out.
Drunk at six in the evening⊠a record he was ashamed to mark.Â
All because of her.
It wasnât supposed to be like this. It was his decision, his choice to break it off between them. So why was he the one who was drowning his sorrows with alcohol? Why was he moping when he was the one against the relationship in the first place?
He wiped his face with a frustrated hand and leaned against the couch. His eyes stared at the black screen of his television; reflecting the pathetic scene that reflected his true emotions. His jacket was thrown unceremoniously on the mahogany table by the entry way and his briefcase was lying in the middle of the hallway. Order and cleanliness seemed to be of no use right now and his head hurt like he ran head first through a concrete wall.Â
Somehow, the silence of his house made him uneasy. He usually loved the peace and quiet, it made it easier to think but now there was an empty silence that was, at the same time, deafening that it caused his headache to multiply three times.Â
Hunt clenched his eyes shut and his mind immediately jumped to what happened last week.
They were walking in the park, it was unusually quiet and there was the absence other people. It was a perfect scenario for them to have a nice evening together without dodging anyone who might recognize them. It was getting more difficult to hide their relationship; while they both didnât give anything away, it was nearly impossible for them to have dinner without raising any alarms from both the paparazzi and the school officials.Â
But his doubts about their dangerous liaison began when Priya was starting to ask questions about his paramour. She knew that he wasnât keen on sharing his private life, especially to an ex-flame. He had already told her that he was seeing someone else so her sudden piqued interest about his personal affair made him break a sweat.
Sneaking around was indeed exhilarating but he knew it would explode on their faces one way or another. It might not be tomorrow or next week⊠but it will happen. He didnât want to be in the middle of it and he didnât want to see her fall from grace either. Their future was on the line, both their lives would be ruined and he can possibly go to jail because of the illicit nature of their relationship.
The longer they keep this up, the harder it will be for them to let go. The moment he had kissed her at the charity masquerade, he knew she will never be âjust another studentâ to him anymore. Thatâs why he should break this off as soon as possible.
So he asked her out and took her in the park for a nighttime stroll which she was contented with. But instead of a nice evening walk, he stopped right in the middle of the pathway, making her stop as well. She tilted her head; light hazel brown eyes bright with sincere curiosity and her black hair tied to its usual low side-ponytail. Her stray bangs fell on her forehead and his hand automatically lifted itself to sweep it away from her face before he stopped the urge and let it fall to his side.
âThomas?â she asked in a soft tone. Worry seeped into her voice like she was anticipating something.
âWeâŠâ he started. A million thoughts travelled into his brain in an instant before he took a deep breath to clear his mind. Now or never. He looked at her straight in the eye, which was a huge mistake in his part because he could see his reflection on them. But he strengthened his resolve, this was best for everyone.
'Best for everyone? Or best for your career?â a quiet voice in his head murmured before he shut it out.
âWe should stopâ he finally uttered.Â
The words was lost to Fia who made a questioning expression âWe have stoppedâ she said. She was wearing her favourite off-shoulder beige sweater and red plaid skirt. Funny, he was usually repulsed by grungy outfits and the tackiness of the oversized top on other women but somehow, she just looked perfect in them. He shook his head a little, trying to regain his train of thought and steeled his gaze on her.
âI meant- we should stop seeing each otherâ he said.Â
The words flew from his mouth and he knew he can never take it back. He had just sealed their fate and for that singular second, he felt all the pain he had experienced in his life punched him squarely to his gut. And it hurt like a bitch.
It hurt more than the time he walked away from Yvonne, letting himself destroy a once happy relationship. It stung more than the time he had received his first negative review that shredded his self-esteem and made him doubt himself, it hurt more than the time he was turned down for a lead role he had spent months practicing for. It hurt more than the time he decided to retire from directing and acting because of the Silver Circleâs pressure for him to compromise his ethics.
All of those experiences were twisted into a single jagged blade and drove straight into his chest.Â
He took a deep breath and looked at her, expecting her to cry or get angry⊠to do something. But instead, her already pale complexion became impossibly paler and he thought he saw her right hand twitch. She didnât say anything nor take any action; she just stood there and stared at him.
Hunt knew she could just see right through him; that was the face she makes whenever she was thinking hard about something. Eyes, focused and void of any emotion, lips curled into a thin line and her shoulders squared into a defiant posture. But even when he had told her many times that she was such a verbose person, he felt uneasy whenever she was silent.Â
When Fia opened her mouth; he thought she was going to scream at him. Maybe even plead or demand an explanation as to why he was calling it quits but as always, Fia Harting was full of surprises.
âI see. Well it was fun while it lasted, thanks for everything, Thomas.â
That was it, and to add salt to the glaringly open wounds; she sounded sincere. Wasnât she the one who pushed him to be together? Risked her future by asking him to give themselves a shot? Now sheâs standing there with a blank face and letting him go without asking for any viable reason.
Where was that defiant young woman who sat on the chair when he told her to get out because she was late on her first day? The director who stood up against Brian Ratzik, Carlotta Valentine, Anders Stone, Richard Sheridan and Priya Singh all in a single lifetime?
He realized that he was standing there like a statue, utterly surprised at how casual she was with everything that was happening. Her expression softened slowly before she leaned up to him and pressed a kiss on his cheek, a couple of inches shy from his lips before she gave a sad smile, âI better go. I have to meet up with Lisa and Addi later anyways. See you in class⊠professor.â
Without waiting for him to say anything, she ran away with her phone glued to her ear and began to talk quietly to someone in the other line. He wanted to go after her, explain why he did it but in the end; he just watched her climb into a cab and disappear into the LA streets.
She must have known the reason; maybe she just woke up from her dream and realized how dangerous their familiarity with each other was.Â
Hunt went back into his car and drove back to his house in complete silence; his eyes kept wandering to the empty passenger seat where Fia would usually look out of the window to take in the lights of the LA nightlife. Her subtle floral perfume lingered in the vehicle⊠he then thought that he needed to air it out as soon as he finds the time.
End of Flashback
âââââââââââââââââââââââââââââ
He blinked the memory out before he swiped the glass from the table and chugged all the amber colored liquid down. The liquor burned his throat before he covered his eyes with his left arm.
Their tryst was wrong in every possible way.Â
He was too old for her, although he had colleagues who had affairs with women twenty years their junior. His age gap with Fia was thirteen years. She was his student and he was her professor, something the school and the general society frowned upon. They can easily slap him with a law on the abuse of authority if they had enough evidence.
He had built a reputation for being one of the toughest professors in HWU (Priya stayed on top of that ladder for four years in a row now) and his hellish assignments and sharp-tongued critiques had never failed to make half a classroom burst into tears. And he will not risk ruining it all for some woman.
But she wasnât JUST some woman.Â
The moment sheâd step in the university board room, he knew heâd never met anyone like her. She came in with her hair messed up like she had just rolled out of bed, her clothes were barely passable in a professional standard and she was whispering to Ethan Blake, the hotshot junior agent who somehow took her in as his client, unaware how much in deep shit she was in before she could even start her first class.
When he told her that she was on probation, she had the guts to glare at Bianca Stone and begrudgingly nodded as he told her that she needed to complete three high-profile projects within a month; an impossible feat.
But she persevered. She grabbed the bull by the horns and completed those projects just in time before her hearing. But it wasnât without casualty; she had gained enemies- powerful ones that can tear her up to pieces. And yet she stared into the void of uncertainty with defiance in her light brown eyes; he knew that she wasnât going to back down without a fight.
She had the talent; she had completed every assignment he had thrown at her and she will push back by showing, not just him, but to everyone else that she indeed deserved to be in the university.
Her optimism was endearing, to say the least. When Hunt first told her to tone it down, she had the gull to poke out her tongue at him and called him a 'cranky and jaded old manâ he retaliated by assigning her on makeup duty, again. She was still naive- a trait that she still hasnât changed despite being in the business for a year now. Her confidence came in throes but she had reservations with other matters (like the fact that she doesnât have a future as a makeup artist or an underwear model) and her taste for fashion was somewhat debatable.Â
Then there was her passion; Fia was the most driven student he had in the years he had spent teaching in the university. She had given her heart and soul in every project and assignment no matter how simple or difficult the task was. But overall the qualities she possessed, the one thing that stood out about her was her tenacity. The young woman just doesnât know when to quit.
But she was not without faults, Fia was also by far the most insubordinate and stubborn person he had ever met. She can be a bit of a brat and her sharp tongue had landed her in more trouble than anyone else in this school. Except Bianca Stone but her father`s money had this power to make every problem go away. She was bold and daring, trying to prod him to certain point so she would know how to press them and play it to her advantage. That 'devil may careâ attitude of hers was definitely a stand out especially to her chosen career as a director.
He always took the safe side when it came to his career; he had already retired from acting and directing because of the chauvinistic Silver Circle so he canât afford losing his status as a professor. But every look she had sent him, every touch had crumbled his resistance and she had kicked the final wall with a tiny nudge of her penny loafer-covered toe. With her kicking the Silver Circle out of his way, he slowly but also strongly came back to practice his craft.
As if someone else was driving his body, Hunt marched into his bedroom and opened his journal that was quietly sitting on his bedside table. Every kiss, every embrace that he shared with Fia- they all meant something for him and he wrote it all in this small book of secrets. His journal was usually reserved with five pages at most for every woman he had ever dated but Fiaâs section had almost eaten away the entire section. He had written about every date they have been, all the details he observed. It was so strange that she had easily outnumbered Yvonneâs pages just after a few dates whilst Yvonneâs was a year-long affair. And after dating Fia for a year and a half, her name was almost always present on every page.
He added small notes on every entry. One such note was about their first movie marathon night-
'Fia brought all the movies sheâd ever loved. Surprisingly, amidst the classic titles and several of Stanley Kubrickâs works, was a copy of Tim Burtonâs Nightmare Before Christmas. She got defensive when I pointed it out and prided herself on how she had always appreciated the stop-motion technique Burton used. I didnât comment on how she hummed along with the songs.â
A wistful smile crept on his face as he read further into Fiaâs section. The dates and times were written down in precise detail. The amount of effort he had spent on writing this just after a date was grueling but at that time- it seemed so important for him to write about her as soon as he got back from their date or after she had left his home.
He stopped leafing through the pages when he stopped at a page that was folded on the edge. He remembered this particular night. Fia had asked him to accompany her to the newest planetarium that opened just a couple of miles away from the Hollywood sign.Â
'I told her it was foolish to be seen together in public but in typical Fia-fashion, she stubbornly told me that it would be impossible for us to be seen since it would be in the dark and the visitors would rather stare at the planets and stars rather than other people. I had to give her that one. When we arrived, there werenât many people around and she led me to the stargazing room. It was a nice experience, although she caught me off guard by telling the stories of different constellations with much fervor. I asked her why she loved stars so much and she explained that 'It was because their light was still shining brightly even when theyâre long burned out so it gave everyone a chance to see that they had existed before they will be replaced by a new one.â I think that I fell in love with her more after that-â
He stopped reading the passage and threw the journal to the other side of the room. Heâs a damn masochist. Why the hell was he recounting those memories about her when their ties were now severed? It was the scotch that was messing with his brain. But thankfully he was sober enough to keep himself from calling her. He at least had the dignity to keep himself from acting like the fact that they were through bothered him, which was an Audrey-worthy performance.Â
The break up happened a week ago but it was only now did he gave in to the urge of drinking himself to a stupor. And why? Itâs all because of Fia. He wasnât lying when he told her that her very presence can undo him. Hell, even the mere thought of her had muddled him into a brainless, spineless Neanderthal who clutched on to the memory of yesterday with the pages he wrote with his heart on his sleeve.Â
Then, he felt anger.
Unbridled, unhinged fury ate away the guilt, regret and sorrow. How dare she?! How could she walk in campus, go about her days like nothing ever happened between them? How come she didnât even look the slightest bit of bereft over the loss of their rapport?Â
Maybe it was his bruised ego talking but he just let it simmer; this was the upside of drinking alone, at least he could wallow in self-pity and put the blame on someone else without embarrassing himself. He sat on the edge of his bed and placed his head on his hands.Â
When he closed his eyes, the events of what happened earlier had somehow replayed in his mind-
Flashback
It was just before his class and the students had began to file in the lecture hall. He was leaning against the stage as he waited for the other students to grab a sit before he could kick out at the late ones. Out of habit, he immediately sought her out among the crowd. One of the students, a blond young male who was wearing the Special Effects attire was walking towards Fia and Addison who, by some miracle, were actually early for their class. They were sitting on the second row with the Fashionista talking to her in what seemed to be a serious discussion before Fia realized that the SFX tech had approached her. Several others noticed it too and some had whispered amongst themselves. Normally he could care less about this kind of tripe event but the hall was suddenly buzzed with excitement when the boy talked her with a nervous face.
Hunt knew he was above eavesdropping- he was above the emotion of jealousy as he was the one who had cut their ties but he canât help but notice the way the boy (who was actually her old partner for an assignment) smiled when she pleasantly grinned at his words and gave a small nod, prompting him to smile like an imbecile (which was how Hunt had puerilely described it) before he took his seat on the row behind Fia and Addison.
Thatâs her game? Make him jealous and flaunt her power over him? Well unfortunately for her; he wasnât the type of man who would grovel for a woman to come bavk to him. And if that was really her plan, did she really think he would feel the slightest hint of envy towards an SFX tech?
He could almost laugh at the pathetic excuse of-
âFia!â
Everyoneâs attention was grabbed by a flashy pink hair and ripped jean shorts. Lisa Valentine jogged right up to Fiaâs seat and gave her a hug all the while saying,
âYou lucky girl! Youâve just won the jackpot!â
Fiaâs eyes widened before she shook her head at the noisy popstar. âLisa, I donât think this is the time to-â
âOh c'mon! Chris asking you to be his plus-one on his movie premier is a bombshell! You should be planning your engagement party right now and lock 'im down!â Lisa giggled before she stopped and finally noticed a very, very irritated man who was standing in front of everyone. The other students gawked at Lisaâs words as if she announced that she will enter a nunnery.
âMiss Valentineâ he growled, âI would appreciate it if you would bother someone else who isnât in my classâ. His tone was soft but venom dripped on every syllable. His left eyebrow started to twitch and the singer had taken the hint and ran out of the hall. But not before giving two thumbs up to Fia who was sliding down to her chair for some unknown reason.
'Chrisâ she had said. The only 'Chrisâ Hunt knew who was having a premier night that day was Chris Winters. Did she agree to be his date? Were they an item now?
Well Chris could have her for all he cared because right now, he was more focused on trying to impart his knowledge to these noxious soft-headed young adults. And with that he started-
âThe basis of every dailies is-â
End of Flashback
ââââââââââââââââââââââââââââââ-
If he had any second thoughts about being a masochist, then this would confirm the earlier statement.
Because he had just turned on his TV and watched the entertainment channel that was covering the movie premier with a poker face and a glass of scotch on hand. The camera showed the hyped audiences behind the velvet ropes as the limousines pulled up by the driveway. One by one, the cast and crew of the movie walked on the red carpet; smiling and posing with the fans for the cameras. He knew the fake smiles from genuine ones and almost everyone wore the masks. Chris Winters came into the view, making almost all the female scream into a high-pitched tone that nearly broke the speakers of the TV and his ears.Â
The young actor was smiling, a real smile that got even wider when he gently pulled someone next to him. There she was, wearing a silver dress with her hair pulled up to a stylish bun. Fia grinned reservedly at the reporters who wasted no time thrusting the microphones to their faces. While Chris answered all the questions regarding the film, she excused herself and walked towards the velvet ropes where Hunt spied Ethan waiting amongst the screeching fans. Once she was out of the picture, a rather enthusiastic reporter asked the actor,
âChris, is it true youâve brought Fia Harting as your date tonight?â
Before he can answer it, another reporter interjected, âIs it true that youâre more than just friends and frequent coworkers?â
Chris gave an enigmatic smirk (which Hunt deemed as a smug expression) before he answered, âWell I donât want to get ahead of myself. Weâll see. For now, weâre just here to enjoy the film!â
The camera now shifted to Fia, who was also being goaded by the paparazzi-
'Fia, is it true that you and Chris have been seeing each other secretly for months now?!â
She was caught off-guard at the question; the natural blush of her face had shamed the rouge that was dabbed on her face and her eyes showed that the very idea was simply impossible to be true. But she just shook her head and said âOh no, I just came here to support him. Actually weâre just-â
The sudden wave of nausea hit him and before Hunt knew what he was happening to him, he was doubling over the porcelain toilet and heaved out all the liquor in his system. After spitting out the last sour taste from his mouth and flushed the toilet, he lashed out a curse before washing his face and rinsed his mouth to rid any remains of alcohol. He could still hear the voice of the reporter that seeped from his living room,
âThere you have it folks; the two people the public wants to see get together may OR may not have a secret relationship so this leaves us with another cliff hanger. What do you think Mark?â
An energetic male voice replied to the womanâs question âWell I donât know about Chris but Fia Harting, the director of `Permanent Wound` and producer of `Centaurus Lost` was keeping quiet about her love life. But if she and Chris would get together- then Hollywood will get a new power couple!â
Huntâs grip on the edges of his sink tightened at his words. Clearly Fia had come with the actor as a plus-one, maybe she just went there as a friend and it might even be a PR move since Ethanâs tailing her to the theater with a VIP pass he wore on his neck.
He pushed the power button savagely before he plopped himself on the couch and tried to sleep off the migraine that started to attack him. Minutes- maybe even hours had passed before he heard the annoying beep of his phone. He turned around and tried to ignore it but the sound persisted. With his patience wearing thin, he stomped towards the infuriating device, almost throwing it at the wall to silence it when he saw the word that flashed on the screen:
5 missed calls from
Fia H.Â
And one voice message.
His thumb hovered above the confirm button before he placed the phone down the table and pinched the bridge of his nose.Â

Listen to Worth It by Fifth Harmony to get more feels with this! I hope you like it!
It was time for practice. Ariâs favorite part of the day.
Everyday for the past month, she decided to finally learn how to dance. She could dance before. If dancing was moving your body weirdly to the sound of the music. Yikes. It would always be in her room, though, so she was safe.
She could sing, why not dance? Isnât that necessary for the band? And Ezra had been very helpful, too. He would come in and be her dance partner when the dancer helping her had plans. She hadnât let him come in until recently, though. When her dancing was getting slightly better. Okay, much better. That way, she could impress Ezra instead of embarrass herself in front of him.
The room they practiced in was like any room where dancers practiced. Like a ballet room, where there were mirrors covering a whole wall. Just as Ariâs wrapping her flannel around her waist, leaving her in just a tank top from the waist up, Ezra enters.
âYou ready?â He asks her after greeting and hugging her. She was probably still red in the face.
Today was one of the days the dancer she usually practiced with busy. He had to attend some dance contest he was the judge for.
âYeah, but we changed the song again. I sent you the lyrics?â Every week they changed the song they danced to. It didnât hurt to also practice her singing.
Ezra clears his throat. âUh, yeah. But Iâm not very good at rapping.â
He always claimed he could do anything, and she couldnât wait to see this. âIâm sure youâll be fine.â She reassures him. âLetâs just get started okay? Remember that the video I sent of Nick and I dancing? Itâs the same routine.â It was a little flirty, but so was the song.
âGot it.â He stepped to the side so Ari could begin, facing the same mirrors that cover the wall.
The songâs beat begins to play, and she starts out dancing the same way they did in the music video. Legs spread, bending her knees, arms spread out and tossing her head side to side, which causes her hair to fly around her.
Give it to me, Iâm worth it
Baby, Iâm worth it
Uh huh Iâm worth it
Gimme gimme Iâm worth it
She repeats the verse again, watching her movements in the reflection in front of her. Moving aside for Ezraâs verse, she tries to remember what she did when Nick was trying to sing it, but she canât seem to.
Ezra raps, only messing up once or twice. For a guy that said he canât rap he was pretty damn good at it. His spine was unnaturally stiff, staring at his reflection while continuing his verse. She circles him slowly, swaying to the beat of the music, watching him under hooded eyes. He looked incredibly hot. Ezra always did, but he looked extra hot rapping.
When he was done, Ari began singing and dancing again. So that Ezra wasnât only needed in the routine when his rap came on, he would spin her around and dip her every once in a while. She would avoid looking at him when she rose up, even when she felt his stare on her back.
Having a crush on a guy like Ezra was never easy. Especially when he had girls throwing themselves at him that were much prettier and bold than Ari ever was. She tried talking herself into doing something that she wouldnât normally do, because this dance routine gave her that opportunity, and she should seize that.
She will seize that.
Her favorite part of the song was coming up, and even though what she was going to do wasnât in the routine, she didnât care. She wanted to daring.
Itâs all on you, itâs all on you
Itâs all on you, so what you wanna do?
And if you donât have a clue
Not a clue, Iâll tell you what to do
Be daring, be daring, be daring, she chanted in her head.
Ari walked over to where Ezra was standing and put her hands on his shoulder, butterflies flying around in her stomach. He looked taken aback, but he didnât remove her hands, and she considered that a good sign.
âCome harder just because, I donât like it,â she reached up onto her toes, her lips brushing his ear slightly. He shivers. âLike it too soft,â she sang into his ear. She tilted her head back, staring into his wide eyes. âI like it a little rough, not too much, but maybe just enough,â she winks at him, a smug smile on her face as she steps away and continues with the dance routine.
Stomach flipping over itself, she smiles widely while continuing on. She couldnât believe she just did that! Never in a million years would she have ever done that, but dancing must have given her a major confidence boost. At least when it came to Ezra.
His rap was coming up again. When she turned to look over at him, he was still where she left him, shock clearly evident on his face. A triumphant smile made its way to her face. She motioned for him to start his part, and he shook his head before beginning rap the verse again.
This time he was a little off, words getting mixed up more than usual. He kept stealing glances at Ari that she pretended not to notice as she danced behind him. Sheâd never seen Ezra lose his cool as much as he did then. Maybe she shouldnât be so happy about it. Finished again, Ezra motioned to her.
Uh huh, you see me in the spotlight.
Ezra stares at her with a glint in his eyes she had never seen more. It almost made her trail off her singing.
âOoh, I love your styleâ
She makes her way over to him, tugging on his shirt as she sang that line.
Uh huh, show me what you got
âCause I donât wanna waste my time.Â
Shaking her fingers while looking up at him, his eyes captivate her. They were the sweetest color of brown, just like chocolate. And she really liked chocolate. She looks away, and continues with the verse.
The ending was coming up, and Ezra seemed to finally come out from his immobile state.
Give it to me, Iâm worth it
Baby, Iâm worth it
Uh huh Iâm worth it
Gimme gimme Iâm worth it
Ari put a lot of space between then for the ending of the routine.
Give it to me, Iâm worth it
She walks back from him, motioning with her hands for him to follow her. Which he does, but she doesnât think too much of it since it was part of the dance.
Baby Iâm worth it
Uh huh Iâm worth it
Gimme gimme Iâm worth it
Give it to meâ
She cuts off, finally realizing the position they were in. They had continued on until Ari was pressed against a wall, but this time when she looked up at Ezraâs eyes, she couldnât look away. You could lose yourself in his eyes, just as she was now. He was so close to her, almost pressed against her. She could feel the heat his body was radiating, hear the ragged short breaths he gave out even when she was the one who did most of the dancing. She forgot for a second what was going on before forcing out the last three words of the song. âIâm worth it.â She breathed softly, still staring up at him.
He smirked, âYou are so definitely worth it.â Ari lets out a small breath before Ezra plants his lips onto hers. It was a sweet, gentle kiss. And before she got the chance to kiss back, he pulled back, and those sweet chocolate-y eyes stared down at her once more. Â
âThat wasnât part of the routine.â She says in a quiet, breathless voice. She wasnât even sure why she was breathless. The kiss hasnât lasted that long, and the routine wasnât that much of a sweat breaker, either.
âI sure hope not,â he says in a huskier voice than usual. âBecause I wouldnât be too happy to know that Nick gets to kiss you every time you do this routine.â
âHe doesnât,â she shakes her head, trying to reassure him. But she didnât understand why she was doing so, he already knew he didnât.
âGood.â Ezra whispers, leaning down to kiss her again. And this time she got the chance to kiss back.
okay so little back story on ezraâs âyouâre definitely worth itâ comment:
a few months ago I discovered that my older brothers girlfriend looks a lot like Camila Cabello (whos a singer in Fifth Harmony if you didnât know) and so I told him and I told her and they agreed with me. So one night, my brother was driving her home, and Worth It came on the radio. When the âbaby Iâm worth itâ line came on she turned to him and was like: âsee, sheâs worth it.â And my brother replies: âif she looks like you then sheâs definitely worth itâ. After my brother told me this I was like AWWWW and when I got this idea I had to include something like it. Okay thatâs enough rambling, hope you liked it!(:

Authorâs Note: Some Nelsen sibling goodness. Basically, I just wanted to write some Danny+Katie interaction, so this happened. Itâs a bit random and jumpy, but there were a few things I wanted to talk about... Iâll have to write more with these two some time.
âI still canât believe you got in here,â Katie chirped, following Danny as he strode across the campus of Hollywood University. âI mean, I know youâre super talented and everything⊠but it was pretty lucky that you were able to get someone to pay for you.â
âLucky, yeah.â Danny gave a small shake of his head.
âI canât wait to go to college,â Katie continued. âThis place is amazing. It looks like heaps of fun!â
Danny smiled. âWhoa there, slow down. Youâre not even in high school yet.â
âYeah, Iâm yet to see how good your school really is. But Iâll be done with that in a few years, anyway.â Danny led them into the platinum dorm building and Katie gasped. âWow, this is so cool! Do you really get to live here?â
He laughed. âSure, thatâs why itâs so expensive.â He let them both into his dorm room Katie looked around for a minute or so.
âItâs so big!â she remarked after a while. âFor a dorm, I mean. I didnât know you could even get dorms with double beds.â
âYeah, well, that c--â
Katie held up a hand. âEw, donât even go there, Danny!â
âYou know me too well,â he mused. âBut anyway⊠I havenât seen you in ages. Sit down. Howâs everything going at home?â Katie climbed onto the bed and sat cross-legged at the head. Danny sat opposite her, mirroring her position. âHowâre Mum and Dad?â
âWell, maybe youâd know if you actually called,â she said pointedly. âBut theyâre good. Itâs weird not having you around, though, and I think they miss you more than they let on.â
âWhat about you? Do you miss me?â
Katie grabbed a pillow from behind her and threw it at him. âNo way!â
Danny chuckled. âSure. What about school? Howâs that going?â
She grimaced and shrugged. âItâs awful.â
His face fell. âYeah?â
âOkay, itâs not that bad,â she amended. âBut loads of people are obsessed with you and itâs weird. Then they work out that youâre my brother and they keep asking me if they can meet you or I can get them your autograph or something.â
âAh.â Dannyâs smile returned. âSorry.â
âCould you, like⊠not be famous until Iâm finished school?â
He laughed. âNot really.â He paused. âAre you serious, though? About people being obsessed?â
Katie rolled her eyes. âTheyâre so annoying. They always talk about you and how great you are and they spend all their time watching videos and looking at pictures of you and-- oh my god, can you please stop modeling. If I see another picture of you in underwear Iâm actually gonna puke.â Danny grinned. âAnd they spend ages talking about rumours of who youâre dating and how they wish it was them, and theyâre, like, thirteen, so ew.â
Danny shrugged. âYou learn pretty quickly how to handle stuff like that. Thereâs no way Iâd ever date any of them, and they know it.â
âSome of them Iâm not so sureâŠâ
âAw, come on, Katie. Are you really telling me youâve never had a crush on a celebrity?â
She folded her arms and made a face. âLike Iâd tell you if I did.â
âGo on,â Danny prompted. âWhoâs your favourite actor right now?â
Katie glared at him for a few seconds, before sighing. âFine. Because youâre way too new to all this to have anything to do with him⊠Chris Winters.â
Danny gave a sudden cough of surprise, gawking at her. âChris? Really?â
âWhat?â Katie asked, smiling sheepishly.
âI take it youâre not as obsessed with him as your friends are with me, yeah?â
She shrugged. âNo way. But heâs still my favourite. Why?â
âHeâs, uh⊠WellâŠâ Danny smirked, trying to picture what her reaction would be. âHeâs a pretty good friend of mine, actually. Heâs a really sweet guy.â He watched her eyes widen as he continued. âDonât tell anyone, but heâs actually playing a big role in my next movie, after heâs finished filming his current one, so Iâve been working with him for a while. In fact, I just got back from Thailand a few days ago because heâs filming there right now. He and I have known each other basically since I started at Hollywood U, and⊠Well, Iâm kind of sleeping with him.â
âShut up!â Katie exclaimed, whacking him a few times with another pillow. âWhy would you even tell me that?â she continued as Danny laughed loudly. âIs any of that even true?â
âYes!â Danny answered. âEvery word! Weâve been dating for a while now. Heâs taken me out a few times.â Katie gave him an unimpressed look. âSeriously! You know what? How about I give him a call. That should clear things up for you.â
He quickly pulled out his phone, and Katieâs expression turned to one of horror.
âNo! No, Danny! Donât!â
âSo you believe me now?â he teased, scrolling through his contacts to find Chrisâ number.
âDanny, please!â
âI thought you were a big fan of his,â he said, switching the phone to loudspeaker and holding it out of her reach as it rang.
âExactly!â she exclaimed. âYou canât just call him! Iâm not ready! What do I say? Danny, hang up right now! Danny!â She grabbed his arm, trying to get him to drop the phone. âDanny, please, just--â
âDanny?â
Danny and Katie fell silent as a voice came through the phone. Katieâs mouth hung open and Danny smirked, bringing the phone between them.
âHey, Chris!â he said, trying not to laugh at the look on Katieâs face.
âYou caught me at a good time,â Chris remarked. âI was just about to head to bed. I canât talk for long, though.â
âWeâll make this quick, then,â Danny agreed. âYou enjoying your last few days of filming?â
He could practically hear Chrisâ smile when he spoke. âThailand is beautiful, as you well know, Danny. And filmingâs been pretty fun, but itâd be even better if you were here with me.â
âI bet youâre keeping pretty busy, though.â
âIâll never be too busy to miss you, Danny.â
Danny looked pointedly at Katie, who blinked a few times.
âWell, when weâre filming Permanent Wound, weâll see each other every day on set,â Danny reminded him.
âAnd off set too, I hope,â Chris replied, earning a raised eyebrow from Katie. âIâm looking forward to it. Iâve only ever heard good things about your skills as a director.â
âWait, now are you talking about on or off set?â
âBoth,â Chris answered. Katie grimaced.
âWell, Iâm looking forward to it, too. And, uh, Chris?â
âMhm?â
âMy sister, Katie, is over right now and Iâm sure sheâd love to say hi.â Katie shook her head furiously. âSheâs a bit of a fan.â She facepalmed as Danny spoke. âHere, youâre on loudspeaker.â
âHey, Katie!â Chris greeted. âDannyâs told me a bit about you. Howâs it going.â
âUh, g-good!â Katie stammered, shooting Danny a sharp glare. âH-how are you?â
âIâm doing pretty well,â Chris answered. âIâve been filming in Thailand for the last few weeks and Iâm heading back to L.A. in a few days. Iâll definitely be catching up with your brother, so maybe you could join us sometime. Iâd love to say hi in person.â
Katie blushed, unable to speak.
âIf thatâs alright with Danny, of course,â Chris added.
âSure,â Danny shrugged. âJust as long as I get you to myself as well.â
âThatâs a guarantee. But the three of us could grab coffee, or something,â he suggested. âMy scheduleâs pretty packed with premieres and promotions for the movie once I get back, but I should get a day or two off before the L.A. premiere. Sound good?â
âYeah, that sounds great!â Katie managed to say.
âWell, weâd better let you get some sleep,â Danny chimed in. âBut it was great talking to you, Chris. I've been missing you."
"I miss you too, baby. I'll send you the details of my flight home as soon as I know them." A brief silence followed. "I'll, uh, I'll see you in a few days, then."
Danny gave a distant smile. "Sweet dreams."
"Thanks, Danny. I love you."
Danny rolled his bottom lip between his teeth momentarily. "See you soon, Chris." He hung up and, after a few seconds, he looked up at Katie. "Satisfied?" She nodded quickly.
"Yeah, but don't ever do that again!"
Danny laughed, moving to place his phone in his nightstand.
"He, um... He said he loves you," she remarked, and Danny froze. "And... you didn't say it back."
"Yeah," Danny said after a moment. He finished putting his phone down and turned back to her. "I know."
"Don't you love him too?"
Danny opened his mouth to reply, then closed it a few seconds later, sighing. "I care about him a lot," he eventually answered. "I don't think I'm ready to bring love into it." Even the word felt strange on his tongue, he found. "He understands."
"Well... At least that clears one thing up."
"Hmm?"
Katie grinned. "The rumours about who you're dating. Chris Winters."
Danny gave a small chuckle. "That's certainly part of the truth..."
"What do you mean?" Katie looked confused. "Oh, are you dating a few people, like with Berry and Ash?"
"Not exactly, no."
"So... you're dating a few people?" Danny nodded. "But separately?" Another nod.
"But they all know about each other and they're all fine with it," he added.
"All?" Katie raised an eyebrow. "So more than two, then?"
"More than two," Danny confirmed.
"Wait, if you're dating lots of people, then are there any, like, secret ones? That you don't want the media to find out about? There's got to be, right?"
Danny felt his cheeks pale slightly.
"Oh my god, I'm right! Tell me everything!" She shifted forwards onto her knees.
"Katie..."
"Oh, come on, Danny! Like I'd ever tell anyone!" She gave him a pleading expression, and he shook his head, smiling slightly. "Okay, so who would you not tell people about? It can't be someone you work with because that'd be like Chris and you're an adult anyway... Is it one of your teachers, or something?" she guessed. When Danny didn't say anything, she gasped. "What? Danny! You're dating one of your teachers?"
"We're not dating, exactly, just--"
"That's so risky, Danny! Are they hot? What do they teach? Do they treat you differently from all their other students? Oh my god, this is just like--"
"Shut up!" Danny hissed, reaching forward to cover her mouth with a hand. "Of course he's hot," he replied quietly. "He teaches Hollywood 101, which is basically an introduction course to working in the industry. And no, he doesn't give me special treatment. If anything, he's even worse to me than he is to anyone else."
Katie pulled his hand away. "You mean he's usually really strict? Does he get you in trouble a lot? Oh! And does he ask you to stay after class? That's so bad, Danny!" she giggled.
Danny could feel himself beginning to blush. "Shush!" Katie giggled more at his embarrassment. "Most people just think he hates me, really. Heâs a nice enough guy, but heâs brutal as a teacher.â
Danny was saved from any further conversation by a knock at the door, and he quickly jumped up to open it. Sighing with relief, he welcomed Ethan into the room and shut the door behind him. Ethan pulled him into a hug and kissed his cheek.
âI have a meeting soon so I canât stay long,â he began, âbut Iâm free from about six, and I thought you might want to go out, if you donât already have plans. Thereâs a Thai place Iâve been wanting to take you to, and we could make a date of it⊠Grab dinner, maybe head down to the pier, go back to mine for the nightâŠâ
Danny smiled warmly. âThat sounds wonderful.â He pressed his lips against Ethanâs for a few seconds, his arms lightly circling his waist. Eventually pulling away, he turned back to Katie and dragged Ethan further into the room. âThis is Ethan,â he announced. âHeâs my⊠agent.â
Katie smirked. âYeah, Iâm sure.â
Danny glared at her, then looked to Ethan. âThis is my little sister, Katie.â
âHey, Iâm not little!â she shot back, folding her arms.
Danny shrugged. âYouâre smaller than me, and thatâs what matters.â
âNice to meet you,â Ethan said, stepping forward and extending his hand.
Katie shook it, then gave him a small hug, which he returned. âAre you really Dannyâs agent?â
Ethan laughed. âYes. I was pretty lucky to snag him on his first day here. Heâs my best client to date, for sure.â
âYour best client to date?â Danny smirked, throwing an arm around him.
âFor sure,â Ethan repeated, grinning at him. âWell, I only really intended to stop by here a minute or so, so Iâd better get going. I hope to see you around, Katie.â
âIt was nice meeting you,â she replied.
Ethan nodded and walked back towards the door with Danny. He stopped before leaving, wrapping his arms around Danny and pulling him close. âIâll pick you up at six, then?â
âYeah, I canât wait,â Danny purred, reaching up to fiddle with Ethanâs tie. âDonât wear yourself out this afternoon, okay.â
Ethan leant forward to rest his forehead against Dannyâs. âIâll see what I can do.â He brought their lips back together for a few moments, before pulling back with a small sigh. âWhat did I possibly do to deserve you?â
âNothing remotely bad enough,â Danny chuckled, opening the door for him. âSee you in a few hours.â
âSee you, sugar,â Ethan grinned, giving him a small wave.
Once he was gone, Danny slowly turned back into the room and walked lazily back over to the bed.
âWell, I like him,â Katie said, as Danny sat next to her.
âMe too,â he sighed, lying back on the bed. âHe gets really busy, so we donât get to go out muchâŠâ He smiled up at the ceiling for a few moments, before looking back at her, clearing his throat. âYou, uh⊠You like him?â
She shrugged. âHe seems nice. And you two looked so natural together. It was cute.â
âYeah, he isâŠâ Danny breathed, and Katie laughed.
âYouâd better have told him you love him,â she said. âIâve never seen anything more obvious.â
âHuh?â Danny sat up again.
âYouâre completely smitten, you idiot.â She shook her head, amused. âBoth of you. How can you not see that?â
âWell, I meanâŠâ Danny trailed off. âI do really enjoy spending time with himâŠâ
Katie furrowed her brow and stared at him for a few seconds. âDo you love him?â
Danny frowned. âKatie, I--â
âItâs a simple enough question, and I think the answer is pretty clear, too. Do you love him?â
They looked at each other in silence for a moment, before Danny glanced down. âYeah, I think I do.â
Katie gave a small squeal and pulled him into a hug. âDanny! This is perfect! He seems really sweet and heâs cute, too, and he obviously loves you⊠You need to tell him!â
âMaybe later,â Danny muttered softly.
ââMaybeâ?â Katie gasped. âI get that maybe youâre not ready to say it now, but you have to tell him sometime! What if he thinks you donât? You canât leave it too late!â
âYeah, I know,â he said quietly, then smiled. âWhat about Chris? Why didnât you insist I say it to him?â
âWell, I didnât really see you interact,â she explained. âMaybe you have that kind of chemistry in person, but I didnât see that. But with Ethan, you just⊠I dunno. You clicked. I donât think Iâve ever seen you so in love.â Seeing him chew his lip slightly, she sighed and hugged him tighter. âDonât rush it, just work on it, okay?â
Danny gave a small nod, then shook his head. âWhat about you?â
Seeming to accept his change of subject, she pulled back from the hug and folded her arms. âWhat about me?â
âAre you seeing anyone at the moment? Any crushes?â
âHell no!â she laughed.
Danny smiled. âYou make it sound like itâs ridiculous.â
âWellâŠâ Katie gave a half shrug. âI guess I wanted to talk to you about thatâŠâ
âYeah?â Danny crossed his legs, sitting opposite her. âIs everything alright? Is someone giving you trouble, orâŠ?â
âOh, no, everythingâs fine!â she said quickly. âI justâŠâ She took a deep breath. âI think I might actually be aromantic.â
Danny nodded. âThatâs fine.â
âIt is?â Her shoulders slumped. âI mean⊠obviously it is. But itâs okay with you?â
âOf course.â He reached out and put a hand on her arm. âNothing wrong with that. But I know it can be a big deal telling people, so well done. Iâll always have your back.â
A wide smile stretched across her face, and she gave a relieved laugh. âI just thought⊠Well, I know sometimes that kinda thing isnât really accepted by people, even other people who arenât straight. I see people invalidate asexuality a lot, so Iâd expect it would be even worse for aromanticism, because even less people know about that. I know a few ace people in my schoolâs GSA, but no one whoâs aro. I feel⊠pretty alone sometimes. Like no one will ever really be able to love me because I canât handle romance.â
âHeyâŠâ Danny soothed, initiating a hug of his own. âYouâll always have me. And, besides, I know a few aro people and some of them are in perfectly happy relationships.â
He felt her shrug. âI know some aro people are okay with romance, even though they donât feel that way⊠But it just makes me really uncomfortable and even though I really want to have some kind of relationship, I know I canâtâŠâ
Danny shook his head. âRelationships donât have to be romantic, Katie. You know Ash? Heâs just the same - aromantic and completely romance repulsed. But look at him and Berry⊠They couldnât be happier.â
Katie pulled back. âAsh is aro and romance repulsed?â she asked, surprised. âBut⊠werenât youâŠ?â
âWe were in a relationship, yeah,â Danny finished. âJust not a romantic one. If you really want to be with someone, then just work out your boundaries and make them clear. Work out what youâre uncomfortable with, and get rid of those things. He always said to Berry and me that what he wanted in a partner was a best friend. Even in a romantic relationship, you should look for someone like that, too. You can just skip out on the romance.â
âThatâs⊠thatâs really a thing?â She looked shocked, but excited. âBecause thatâs what I want. I want to be able to spend my life with someone and for it to be a committed, steady relationship, but without it being romantic. And thatâs what they have?â
Danny nodded. âYeah. You should go talk to them about it sometime.â
Grinning, Katie pulled Danny back into yet another hug. âThank you, thank you, thank you!â
âNo problem,â he chuckled. âBut Iâll warn you now⊠from my experience with Ash, youâre probably gonna come up against some rough patches. Romance is so widespread and ingrained into society, and as someone who doesnât relate to that, it might get you down a little, but remember you can always find people to talk to about that. Thereâs me, and then Iâm sure heâll be there for you, too. Heâll understand. He told us that a lot of his trouble was that he didnât have any other aro people he knew that he could talk to, so I know heâll be able to help if you need someone.â
âYouâre the best, Danny,â she murmured into his shoulder. âI donât know why I was nervous to tell you. I havenât told Mum and Dad because I donât think theyâll understand, even though theyâre fine with you, so I thought maybe youâd also not understand. SorryâŠâ
âItâs fine, Katie. Iâm really proud of you for telling me, and I do feel pretty honoured.â He sighed. âYouâre probably right about Mum and Dad, though⊠Iâm sorryâŠâ
She shrugged. âIâve accepted that I might not be able to tell them for a while. Iâm just glad I can talk to you.â
âAlways,â Danny smiled.
They stayed in the hug for a few more seconds, before Katie quickly pulled back.
âUgh, thatâs enough sentimentality for today!â
Danny laughed. âI hear you! Come on, how about I show you around some of the campus?â
âThat sounds great!â
Danny led them back across the room and pulled the door open. âLetâs go!â

One Look
âEthan, what are we doing here?â
Bree Wesley was standing outside a newly-opened lounge with her best friends Kane Washington, Addison Sinclair, and Ethan Blake.
âI heard this place was like a coffee shop, but with alcohol,â Ethan said with a slight chuckle. âThe perfect place for us to unwind after this week.â
âAnd you didnât want to go to my karaoke bar?â Kane quickly asked.
Ethan laughed and shook his head. âYouâd still be working. You need to chill out like the rest of us.â
Kane smiled and rolled his eyes. âIf you insistâŠâ
âOf course he insists!â Addison chimed in. âHe needs it as much as we do.â
âYouâre spoiling us, Ethan,â Bree said with her arms crossed, a smile on her face.
Ethan smiled. âIâm only going to make that worse; everything is on me tonight.â
Addison giggled softly. âOh, thatâs why.â
âCan we get inside already?â Bree asked before the others could add on something.
âOf course we can go in, darlinâ,â Kane replied, his hand swiftly going for the door.
The second they walked in, thereâs soft piano music playing. A man in a pitch black suit sat at the piano, and Bree and Kane exchanged glances in response to how familiar the figure at the instrument seemed to be as they sat down at a booth with Addison and Ethan.
Minutes passed by before the first round of drinks is brought to the table. Addisonâs drink is a martini, Ethanâs is a water (before he moves on to rum), Breeâs a hot tea, and Kaneâs a coffee.
The man at the piano started up another song, quickly adding vocals to this song unlike the past ones he played.
One look, dark room
Meant just for you
Time moved too fast
You play it back
âOh, I love this song!â Addison said with a smile, clasping her hands together.
Buttons on a coat
Lighthearted joke
No proof, not much
But you saw enough
Ethanâs the first of the four of them to recognize whoâs singing, and when he did, his eyes widened and he almost spat out his water.
âWhat is it, Ethan?â Bree asked, concerned.
âListen,â was all Ethan could say.
The table got quiet.
Small talk, he drives
Coffee at midnight
The light reflects
The chain on your neck
He says âlook upâ
And your shoulders brush
No proof, one touch
You felt enough
You can hear it in the silence, silence
You can feel it on the way home, way home
You can see it with the lights out, lights out
You are in love, true love
You are in love
âAlright, Ethan, what gives?â Kane finally asked.
âYou donât recognize who that is?â Ethan quickly retorted.
The other three shook their heads.
Ethan sighed. âThatâs Professor Hunt!â He whispered loudly so that they didnât cause a scene.
Bree and Kaneâs faces paled. So it was who they thought it was earlier.
âŠWell, this was going to make things a little awkward.
Both Bree and Kane had history with Thomas Hunt, but in two completely different ways. Bree was an on-and-off ex-girlfriend, while Kane was quite often being Breeâs protector against Thomas. The last time any of them saw each other was six months ago, and already the encounter was something neither Bree nor Kane wanted to speak of in front of Addison and Ethan again.
And yet⊠something was different about this whole thing compared to the awkward encounters before.
Morning, his place
Burnt toast, Sunday
You keep his shirt
He keeps his word
And for once, you let go
Of your fears and your ghosts
One step, not much
But it said enough
Listening to the words, Bree and Kane looked at each other, as if this was some unspoken code for a conversation between them.
You kiss on sidewalks
You fight and you talk
One night, he wakes
Strange look on his face
Pauses, then says
âYouâre my best friendâ
And you knew what it was
He is in love
Breeâs facial expression reflected confusion, wondering the same thing as Kane: why didnât Thomas change any of the words to the song at all?
You can hear it in the silence, silence
You can feel it on the way home, way home
You can see it with the lights out, lights out
You are in love, true love
They both think about the whole situation for a moment: some lyrics represented a memory from the past relationship Bree had with Thomas, but not all of them made sense.
UnlessâŠ
Kaneâs eyes widened as he realized something:
Thomas was singing about him too and not just Bree - not only that, but Thomas had fallen in love with him too.
âŠNo wonder things had seemed a bit different this time.
And so it goes
You two are dancing in a snow globe round and round
And he keeps a picture of you in his office downtown
You understand now why they lost their minds and fought the wars
And why Iâve spent my whole life trying to put it into words
Bree and Kane glanced at each other one last time, coming to an agreement with only their eyes as they exited the booth and went into a hallway by the restrooms, hoping that if Thomas was paying attention, heâd take the hint.
You can hear it in the silence, silence
You can feel it on the way home, way home
You can see it with the lights out, lights out
You are in love, true love
Youâre in love
You can hear it in the silence, silence
You can feel it on the way home, way home
You can see it with the lights out, lights out
You are in love, true love
Youâre in love
Youâre in love
You are in love, true love
Youâre in love
As soon as the song ended and the crowd applauded, Thomas stood up from the piano bench and took a bow. He buttoned his suit jacket before exiting the stage and walking out toward the hallway.
None of them spoke for a moment, looking into the othersâ eyes as if making sure that what was happening was actually real.
âWill the both of you ever forgive me for my actionsâŠ?â Thomas finally asked to break the silence, keeping himself composed for the moment. âI know that I havenât been the best person to either of you⊠ever⊠but I promise that I wonât do what I did to both of you ever again.â He sighed, his voice about to crack. âI-It took me a while to find out for myself what I really wanted⊠and-â There was the crack. â-a-and I want you. Both of you.â He let one single tear fall from his face as the rest of his body stayed hard as a stone. âNo more regrets between us. And no more running away. Not again.â
Bree and Kane were at a loss for words until, after another silent moment, Bree walked over and wrapped an arm around Thomas. âAre you sure this is what you want?â
Thomas nodded firmly. âNow that Iâve realized this, Iâve never wanted anything more. Iâve never been more sure of anything in my life.â
âIn that caseâŠâ Bree smiled before standing on her toes - even in her heels - and kissing Thomas softly. âI can forgive you.â
âSo can I,â Kane replied, wrapping his arm around Bree as she let go of Thomas.
Thomas let out a sigh of relief, showing a small smile.
âNow, were you just going to do an impromptu gig and leave?â Kane asked. âOr were you going to stay and have a round or two?â
Shrugging, Thomas chuckled a bit. âWell, I guess I do have a reason to celebrate with a couple rounds.â
Bree giggled and grabbed Thomasâs hand and led as the three of them started on their way back to the booth.
âYouâre still kind of an asshole, Thomas,â Kane said frankly, âbut youâre our asshole.â

Chapter One
Chris, his parents, and I sat at the dining room table in complete silence. I kept my eyes down on my plate, avoiding making eye contact with Nancy who was sitting right across from me. I was afraid to say anything after witnessing the argument between her and Chris. You could cut the tension between them with a knife, and it made me extremely uncomfortable to be caught in the middle of their dispute.
âSo⊠Chris,â Chrisâ mother began, breaking the frigid silence. âI forgot to mention this earlier, but I invited Tyler and Sean over for a visit. They should be here sometime tomorrow morning.â
âGreat. Why donât we just have a full-on family reunion while weâre at it?â
âI think that would be a great idea. Itâs been awhile since youâve seen the rest of the family, and Iâm, uh, sure they would, um⊠love to meet Trace.â I glanced up at her, and she gave a fake, close-lipped smile.
âAwesome,â Chris mumbled. âMore people to judge me.â I placed a firm hand on his knee. âChris, control yourself,â I muttered sharply, not wanting his temper to get out of control again.
âChristopher, please. Now is not the time,â Nancy said. And for once, I agreed with her. I already had enough drama for one day.
âAnd when I told you I was getting married wasnât the time for you to shit all over everything like you always have a fabulous way of doing.â
I sighed in defeat. Here we go again.
âChris, donât talk to your mother like that,â John said sternly. âIt doesnât matter how grown you are, itâs disrespectful.â
âWhatâs disrespectful was how she treated Trace and I earlier.â
âYou know that was not what I intended, Chris.â
âIt wasnât? Then why do you always act like this every time I try to make decisions for myself?â
âI just donât think marriage is good for you right now! I donât want you to-â
âYou donât want me to what? Be happy? I honestly expected a lot more support from my own mother, but I guess I was fucking mistaken.â Chris slammed his fork down, stood up from the table, and stormed out of the dining room. His hard footsteps echoed throughout the house until I heard a door slam and it suddenly got quiet again.
I let out an exasperated sigh and excused myself from the table. I quickly exited the dining room and dashed upstairs to find Chris.
âChris?â I called out as I pushed open the door to the guest room where we were supposed to stay. Chris was standing in the middle of the room, rubbing his temples and rocking back and forth on his heels, breathing heavily.
âChris...? Are you okay?â I asked and entered the room, closing the door behind me. I took a few steps toward him and lightly put my hand on his shoulder. âCalm down and talk to me, please.â
âIâm sorry, Trace, but this is just so frustrating⊠sheâs always fucking like this...â
âLike what...?â I asked.
âShe always has a problem with everything I do. Itâs just not fair.â
âI know itâs not fair... but I donât think cussing your mom out at the dinner table is helping your case.â
âWhat did you expect me to do?â
âUm, definitely not that.â I took both of his hands in mine and looked up at him to see that his glassy blue eyes were filling with tears, which surprised me a little. I wasnât used to Chris being so⊠emotional.
âLook at me, Chris. I know how hard it is for someone thatâs supposed to love you not accept you for who you are. It hurts. It hurts really fucking bad. But you canât just keep lashing out at her. I think you guys should just sit down and have a real discussion."
âLike thatâs going to work,â he mumbled, his gaze drifting down to the floor. âI donât think Iâve told you, but I havenât always had the best relationship with my mom and⊠letâs just say we donât always see eye to eye.â He closed his eyes and took another deep inhale. âIâm just so upset because⊠Iâve been with you for so long, and I thought she would at least be accepting by now. I thought things would be different. FuckâŠâ
âIt takes time, Chris,â I said and cupped his face in my hands. â I know itâs hard right now, but I promise you that things will get better.â
And hopefully in time for the wedding...
âThank you, Trace.â He gave me a small smile that didnât quite reach his eyes. âI love you so much.â
âI love you too.â He exhaled deeply and lowered his head, pressing his forehead against mine, and gave me a kiss.
"I'm sorry if I made you uncomfortable again. Itâs been a long day and I donât really feel too well.â
âItâs okay. Do you⊠want to go back out there and finish eating?â
âHell no.â
âMe neither, to be honest,â I said with a nervous laugh. âDo you want me to go tell your parentsâŠ?â
âThatâd be great. Thanks.â
I released myself from Chrisâ embrace and turned to leave the room. I opened the door and stepped out into the hallway. I closed the door and began to make my way back to the dining room until I bumped into John.
âGah! Iâm sorry!â I exclaimed and took a few steps back from him.â I was just going to, um, tell you that Chris and I wonât be returning to dinner....â
âI kind of figured that,â John said. âI actually wanted to come and talk to you.â
âUm, about what?â
âI wanted to apologize for my wifeâs behavior.â
âYou donât have to do that. I mean, I completely understand where sheâs coming from.â I nervously tucked a strand of hair behind my ear. âIâm used to this type of thing.â
âThatâs an awful thing to be used to.â His eyebrows drew together in concern. âBut I can assure you, all this shenanigans isnât for the reason you think.â
Oh?
âI thought it was made pretty clear that she doesnât want Chris marrying me because Iâm a man.â
âItâs a lot deeper than thatâŠâ he continued. âItâs just some things that happened in the past, thatâs all. It doesnât have anything to do with you at all, so donât waste your time worrying about it.â
âOh⊠alright then.â
âAnywaysâŠâ John cleared his throat then flashed me a big smile. âIt was nice to be able to finally meet you, Trace. Goodnight.â
âGoodnight, sir.â I turned around and headed back down the hallway to the guest room. I was so confused. I knew it wasnât any of my business, but I felt like there was a lot that Chris wasnât telling me.

Danny was finding it hard to get Ace out of his mind. They had spent most of the day campaigning, then had practiced his debating long into the afternoon, but it wasnât the politics that he had stuck in his head. It was the lines, the looks, the charm⊠He sighed, looking around the quad, which was mostly deserted, except for a few of his friends. He spotted Ace pacing back and forth in front of a bench, talking quickly into his phone, took a deep breath, and walked towards him. Seeing him approach, Ace held up a hand as he wrapped up the phone call.
ââŠYes, and tell him that heâs got until Sunday. ⊠No, this Sunday. ⊠Work with me, Montillique. Iâll see you tomorrow morning.â He ended the call, sighing, then looked up. âDanny.â
âUh⊠problem?â Danny asked, and Ace waved the question off.
âNot at all,â he smiled. âWhatâs up?â
âWellâŠâ Danny began. âI actually wanted to ask you somethingâŠâ He trailed off, hesitating.
Ace studied his face curiously, and Danny felt his cheeks warm.
âI, uh⊠I mean⊠Well, I thought maybe, umâŠâ he stammered. Ace waited patiently as he took a few more breaths, trying to get his thoughts in order. âI was wondering if you wanted to go to, uh⊠a cafe, or something,â he said quickly. âN-not to work on my campaign, or anything. Just us. I mean, that could be just with us⊠But not for that. Um⊠Just, uh, for⊠for funâŠ? No, not forfun⊠Well, it would be fun, butâŠâ His blush deepened. âSorry,â he mumbled, and Aceâs smile softened.
âAre you asking me out, Danny?â he asked, earning a quick nod in reply. âIâm touched,â he said, genuinely. âUmâŠâ It was the first time Danny had seen him falter, and he thought the way that Ace tilted his head slightly and fiddled with the phone in his hands was unbelievably cute. âI⊠I canât,â he responded. âIâm sorryâŠâ
Danny nodded, hoping his cheeks hadnât gone too red. âThatâs okay,â he assured him. âIt was a bit of a long shot, anyway.â
âItâs not you, Danny,â Ace quickly added. âI just⊠I donâtâŠâ
âOh! Oh, I didnât assumeâŠ! Not that there would be anything wrong with that, umâŠâ
âBreathe,â Ace chuckled. âYouâre fine, Danny. And Iâm not straight, either.â
Danny gave a slow nod. âRightâŠâ
âIâm asexual,â he clarified. âNot that that affects who I date. Thatâs just not on the agenda at the moment.â
âYouâre asexualâŠâ Danny repeated, thoughtfully. âThatâs⊠convenient. Given your name, I mean.â
Ace laughed. âThatâs what I was going for when I chose it.â
âYou chose your name?â
Ace shrugged. âYeah, why not? I like it.â
âSo do I,â Danny blurted. âUhâŠâ He shuffled his feet awkwardly. âSorry, maybe I should go⊠Just forget this happened, okay?â
Ace placed a hand on his arm, looking softly into his eyes. âItâs cool, Danny. I think itâs a little farfetched to say Iâll forget - I meant it when I said I was touched - but this doesnât have to affect anything. Iâll keep working with you through your campaign, and Iâll stay in touch after you win. Youâre⊠youâre pretty special, Danny.â
Danny gave him a shy smile. âYouâre not too bad yourself.â
âIâll see you tomorrow for the debate, okay?â He slowly withdrew his hand, his eyes sparkling. âYouâre going to do great.â
âThanks, Ace.â
Dannyâs cheeks were still pink as he gave a small wave and turned to walk away, still smiling to himself.
