Use Physics to Explain The World
The scientific discipline of Physics has its beginning as early as Ancient Greece, wherein Aristotle tried to explain the Universe. Since then, philosophers, mathematicians and Physicists have tried to postulate formulae to explain the forces of nature, most of which are felt by Man but invisible to him. In the Seventeenth Century, Sir Isaac Newton took it upon himself to describe the motion or inertia of objects. He postulated the Three Laws of Motion.
The fundamental law is that objects at rest are inert unless acted upon by a force. The force may be a person picking up the object, or as Newton later discovered, Gravity. However, in the absence of an applied force, objects that are at rest, like a stone, remain at rest without movement, or inert. However, this tidy theorem was nearly displaced by the action of an apple falling from a tree. No force that Newton could see had been exacted upon the apple, so he theorized that the apple must have been reacting to A Force Exerted at a Distance or Gravitational Force. This explanation is that forces can be exerted by largest objects that are physically separated by a distance but nevertheless interact, such as the Sun, the Moon and the Earth. Force is a vector quantity that has both directionality and magnitude.
The measure of force is described in terms of Newtons, after the physicist who defined force. Contact Force was the second type of force explained by Newton. It applies to the amount of force that is required to displace, or move an object. It is measured in terms of work and the components are force, velocity and resistance. Also, when force is applied, the energy is absorbed and transferred; therefore, every action has a separate and equal reaction. This is calculated by using the principle of Torque, which is a formula that uses the velocity, angle and speed to determine the amount of force that is exerted upon an object. This calculation can be used to determine the force that is exerted upon a streetlamp when a car hits it, or better yet, upon a running back's knees when hit by a linebacker. In this case, the force is absorbed by the knees and transferred to another part of the of the running back's body, and finally to the ground. Work merely calculates the amount of force that must go into moving or displacing an object; it has no reference to the amount of time it takes to do this. In reality, forces have power and exert their force and work in real time. That is to say they act with power which is the amount of work done divided by the amount of time it takes to perform the task. Power can be increased by either decreasing the time or by increasing the amount of work. Power is measured and described by the unit called the Watt, which is the basic description of electrical power. Electricity is power that is generated by mechanical work that is provided either by wind, water, or the magnetic power in a generator.
