Vampire question. Version 6 is after version 20?
for sensible reasons, the sequence of editions of vampire the masquerade go: 1st ed 2nd ed Revised v20 v5 v6
For folks unclear, because the numbering is ridiculous: V20 was the 20th anniversary edition (and was part of a line of [letter]20 WoD anniversary editions) and was announced years before V5, resulting in the weird naming.
luckily it could be worse! such as hunter, which went straight from first edition to fifth edition!
White Wolf seemed continually shocked that, no matter how many times times they wrote “vampires have no sex drive” or “the vampire sex drive is re-wired to center on feeding as a replacement for sex” across the first two editions of VtM, most players or writers just ignored them because the amount of players that want vampire smut is pretty much always going to be higher than those that want to subvert expectations around sex and intimacy with vampires.
So then in Revised they changed approach from saying “vampires have no sex drive” to “well if you have sex as a vampire it’s actually really icky.” They added details like vampires having all their bodily fluids replaced by blood and were not shy about saying "yes that means you cum blood and all sex is period sex." They were trying to gross out the fandom and make people stop playing horny vampires, but were again, shocked when players either ignored this, or were into it. Then when they finally acted like they had acquiesced to fans and made an honest to gods VtM smut novel it was filled with incest, necrophilia, and more SA than a late-stage L. Ron Hubbard book.
Yet they still were baffled by the amount of vampire smut being produced, realizing that, if anything, they had only encouraged the player base. Then when V20 came out they were line "fine, fuck you, vampires can have sex now and it's normal, the Blush makes all your bodily fluids normal and stuff, you win." Dark Ages V20 even leaned into this and is I think the only VtM gameline that took what I would describe as a "normal" attitude towards romance, sex, and intimacy within a TTRPG. For a moment, I thought maybe they'd finally gotten over themselves. Aaaaaand then V5 came out and we got Bloodstained Love and had to experience the lovely drama around the "Here's how much Humanity you need to fuck" rules and the "Bleed is always good and you should always strive for it" lines they put in. So like, any thoughts on V6? What weird drama is VtM going to get into around portrayals of sex and romance at the table? I wonder what strange and unique controversy they'll give us this time
Something fun about Spanish is that there are certain situations there are two words for the same thing because one word comes from Latin and the other comes from Arabic.
So for example for scorpion we have "escorpión" (latin) and "alacrán" (arabic), for oil we have "aceite" (arabic) and "óleo" (latin) (although in this case aceite is by far the most common, óleo is only used in very specific context, e.g. when you're talking about oil paintings). Similarly for olive we have "oliva" (latin) and "aceituna" (arabic).
Alternate universe where everything is the same except that the standard term for olive oil in Spanish is not "aceite de oliva" but "óleo de aceituna"
Another fun thing about Arabic-derived vocabulary in Spanish is that nearly every word that starts with al- in Spanish is the result of people rebracketing Arabic words (i.e. people adopting Arabic words but mistaking the Arabic article "al" for a part of the word itself)
Words like alcalde, almohada, alacena, alforja, alfombra, almenara, alcoba, albahaca, algodón, alcancía, and so on and so forth are a result of this phenomenon.
what's a really funny one is that portuguese uses azeite and óleo, but azeite is exclusively used for olive oil, so it's shorthand for olive oil
interestingly, Portuguese tends to do this a lot, where one of the two is favored in generalistic fashion while the other is specific if not outright only picking one; the trees are oliveiras but the the fruits are only azeitonas.
In Italian "aceto" means vinegar, and learning Spanish in school I was always like "huh isn't it weird how they use a word that clearly is related to our word for vinegar to say oil?" but actually it turns out it literally just is a coincidence. Aceite comes from Arabic, but aceto in Italian comes from Latin acētum, which is derived from acer, meaning "sour". Isn't that fun?
Everyone reblog this. Mandatory.
Cool Old School VtM Lore Pt. 1
Ever heard of the Panders? The Camarilla has a policy of treating the Caitiff like dirt. Whether you don't know your sire, or you came out the other side of death wrong, in the Cam you're persona non-grata, a second class citizen at very beast and usually stakebait for the local Sheriff. In the Sabbat though, the supposedly monstrous Sect? Not so. Back during the Third Sabbat Civil War back in the 1950s, the Sabbat's left wing party, the Loyalists, was fighting against the right wing, the Ultra Conservatives, and the Caitiff of the Sabbat, used to being treated like dirt until then, were caught in the middle. Neither side wanted the clanless, but that didn't stop them from organizing. A Caitiff named Joseph Pander got a bunch of his Clanless pals together, waited until the Loyalists were on the verge of claiming victory over the Ultra Conservatives, and then abruptly took the side of the Ultra-Cons, attacking the Loyalists and driving them off from Ultra-Conservative strongholds. Their charming leader made a pretty good argument to the Consistory after winning the civil war on the side of the Sabbat's right wing. If the Sabbat hated the Antediluvians, why shouldn't the Caitiff, who had no connection to the so-called Blood Fathers, be part of the war against them? Having shown their loyalty and forcing the Ultra-Conservatives to put up or shut up when it came to their ideology, the Consistory recognizes the Caitiff as an official Clan within the Sabbat, under the name Panders, in recognition of their sire. Since then, the Caitiff have had it better in the Sabbat than any other Sect. Sure, they tend to stick together still, and some elders still prefer to use their Packs for the most dangerous jobs in the Sect, but they enjoy the same freedoms as the rest of the Sabbat. More than that, they have a unique Rite that they've cultivated under the Sabbat's Ritae system, called One of My Tribe. A vampire that undergoes this Rite sheds all previous Clan connection, including their Clan curse, and comes out the other end as a Pander, a Caitiff, taking on a new name in the process. Considering how rough some curses can be, this could be an appealing option to anyone that got Mass-Embraced into a Clan that doesn't fit them, has a curse they can't handle, or just to get away from a bad sire. Interesting that the Sect most often considered the "bad guys" of VtM treat the Clanless vampire better than anyone else, isn't it?
Idk who needs to hear this— stop playing safe characters.
If your characters always say the right thing, react the right way, or avoid conflict all together, you’re setting them up to be incredibly boring and one-dimensional. People are fucking messy. We try our hardest where we can, but we often misread things, say/do the wrong things, act in our own best interests, and make selfish choices. That being said, none of those things necessarily make them a bad person— just flawed and above all else, human. Your characters do not need to be a personal reflection of your morals and values. It is not a moral failing to play a character who is a bad person who does bad things; regardless of what others may say. It is, in fact, a good thing to play characters who challenge your convictions. If anything, you’ll learn more about where you stand/fall playing a piece of shit than always playing the character that best represents your ideal ‘person.’ Character growth requires conflict. Character growth requires failure. I promise you, playing a deeply flawed character will do more for you personally than playing the same character archetypes over and over again.
I beg you: do not give your VtM setting a Prince.
If you're running a standard Camarilla game, or, especially, a political intrigue game, try deliberately not creating a central figure of authority who can simply arbitrate disputes and declare what is and isn't permissible. It very easily, even unintentionally, turns into GMPCism.
You have this extremely powerful NPC sitting at the top of the political hierarchy, and whenever the players do something interesting, the Prince can effectively go "No." Suddenly this character becomes the GM's veto button. The coterie can scheme, investigate, negotiate, threaten, betray, and maneuver all they want, but ultimately there is some 300-year-old vampire in a mansion whose opinion supersedes everything they've done.
Instead, make the political order unstable. Take away the obvious final arbiter and let the players discover what actually happens when nobody has the authority to settle things.
Maybe a Sabbat raid killed half the city's elders three months ago. The surviving Kindred are desperately trying to reconstruct a functioning hierarchy, but nobody has enough legitimacy to claim the throne.
Maybe the Prince disappeared, and the Primogen are now fighting over whether the position should even be restored.
Maybe the city is a newly established domain where a handful of Anarchs have carved out territory and everyone is still pretending there are rules.
Maybe the old Prince technically still exists, but has become so weak, isolated, or politically irrelevant that everyone has quietly stopped obeying them.
Maybe there are competing claimants to Praxis, and the coterie's actions can genuinely determine which one wins.
Or don't even make the city a coherent political unit. Give the characters a dozen overlapping power structures: a Ventrue banking family that controls mortal finance, a Brujah neighborhood militia, a Nosferatu information network, an old Tremere chantry that refuses to recognize the city's new government, and three Anarch barons who all insist that their territory is independent.
Now suddenly everything matters. If the coterie pisses off the Ventrue, there isn't a Prince they can appeal to. If they kill someone important, there isn't necessarily an elder who can simply declare the matter closed. If they make an alliance, that alliance can actually change the balance of power. If they convince two factions to cooperate, they have accomplished something that might genuinely reshape the city.
Most importantly, the players become political actors rather than petitioners.
VtM is at its most interesting when authority is something characters have to negotiate, manufacture, contest, and sometimes violently enforce, not an NPC sitting in a tower who exists to tell everyone what the rules are.
Take away the Prince. Watch the consequences become 200% more consequential.

Actually every clan should have a Cleopatra archetype; more sires should embrace someone who doesn't fit into the clan at all purely for a twee little lesson.
Venture embracing someone who doesn't care about their food so they learn the importance of a refrained palate.
Tzimisce embracing someone who moves around all the time so they learn the importance of regional pride.
Tremere embracing someone who enjoys casual sex so they learn the importance of commitment.
Gangrel embracing someone who thinks having animal features would be weird or off-putting so they learn that having a tail and kitty ears is literally cutes
Help I can't stop worldbuilding vampire: the masquerade situations in random small to medium-sized European cities
Then give us some!
Ok, here's one.
Jesolo is a small beach town in Veneto, Italy. It has only one resident kindred, the self-styled Prince of Jesolo, a Toreador ancilla that came from Venetian nobility by the name of Andrea Soranzo. Jesolo is a relatively famous town with a massive influx of tourists every summer. So, around mid august every year, as the population of the town temporarily explodes (from less than 10k to around 300k), Andrea Soranzo invites around a dozen kindred, mostly from the Veneto region, to participate in a game of his design: whoever can hunt the mortal with the best quality blood on the night of Ferragosto (August 15th) wins a boon from him. The mortals captured in the Ferragosto hunt need to be brought to him alive, and the best candidates are turned into blood dolls and, in at least one occasion, one of the candidates was so exceptional they were granted the embrace on the spot. The Ferragosto hunt has been a kindred tradition since the 1980s.
Love that idea!!!

what's a good place to find a queer VtM group to play with? cause all of the ttrpg LFG places are just festered with people only looking to play DnD
I dont know sadly
but maybe we could make a group?
V6 really is keeping the tradition of odd numbered editions being the gritty personal horror ones and the even numbered editions being the weird, experimental, gay ones (compliment)
V1: ahh being a vampire is terrible, I need to find a cure! All of the prim and proper vampires don't want me, I can only rely on myself to overcome this curse
V2: being a vampire fucks actually let’s team up with Samuel Haight and that Ravnos elder pretending to be Caine and blow up a Baali methuselah inside a volcano
Revised: Being a vampire is an intense struggle with your inner Beast, you have to cling to those scraps of humanity you still have, even when the monsters around you are trying to strip it away.
V20: Me and my Sabbat Pack all follow different versions of the Path of Lilith, we have hella vampire sex and practice forbidden blood magick, and there’s a weird guy with shark teeth telling us about a cool club in the underworld
V5: Being a vampire means being hurt, first by your sire who killed you and turned you into a monster, and then by the elders who expect you to bear the brunt of their burdens, including the bigoted hunters who consider your very existence a crime. I fear the apocalypse is upon us
V6: Last night I punched a hole in a hunter's ass cheek, lifted him up with one hand, and shotgunned him like a can of beer. The entire thing was recorded by a ring doorbell camera but everyone thought the online video was AI. Anyways I'm slightly more monstrous now but I'm going to balance it out by having a very emo outburst at the club later.
