“Because you are not a prize to be won. You are flesh and blood and I would rather that you offer that to me yourself.”
His dark eyes were solemn and contemplative.
He unfolded the piece, reading it over a few times. It wasn’t horrible. He found it to be quite sweet.
“ I’m very happy you took the time to do this for me. This deserves a reward. What would you like, love? ”
He was not overly fond of being open with his emotions but he was aware that he needed to be relatively open with George when it came to such things.
“I thought of you often while I was away. I need no reward, save it be you.”
An arched eyebrow met this statement. George was not one to be ordered around, no matter what happened. Things happened when he wished them to. However, he did not wish to have a quarrel over this.
Reaching into his pocket, he silently produced a folded piece of parchment and handed it over.
“ Oh George, that is quite alright. ”
Even if the poem sucked, he could still appreciate that George took the time to make a poem just for him.
“You say that now.”
His voice was wry, clearly not wanting to let the monarch see this work that he had tried his hand at.
“Soon but it’s horrid. I warn you now.”
He was well aware of the king’s love of poetry but as always, George was his harshest critic.
"I believe I will be refraining as well."
It wasn't really by choice but George had helped to raise the children of much of his extended family. He had been a father in everything except name.
"I have indeed. In one of my unsent letters I even attempted poetry for you."
He snorted softly. He could very well imagine having troublemaker sons, especially if George was involved as well.
“They are both intelligent and have served me well. If they could...contain themselves, that would be so much to the better.”
Hamilton especially. The general worried about him and what he could potentially become later.
“Lafayette and Hamilton? I regard both of them as the sons I never had the chance to have.”
He spoke matter of factly, with no evasion. He was an honest man, always had been and always would be.
“There is no reason for you to worry.”
He brought the shorter man’s hand up to his lips, brushing a feather light kiss against the back of it.
“ If I didn’t like you so much, I might not have believed you. “
He sighed, leaning against the General. His body was always so warm, something George often found himself indulging in. Was it to early to say he was in love?
“Were there any...indiscretions on my part, you would have heard. A war camp is a small space and there are many who would not hesitate to speak ill of me.”
This was a fact and the weariness in his voice was evident. He allowed his thumb to brush across the king’s knuckles.
He was genuinely confused. What on earth did George mean? His eyes had never strayed from two things: his objective as the general of the Continental Army and the man in front of him. The pout made the corners of his mouth quirk upward slightly, warming his face.
“Do not believe everything that you might hear. I can attest to the fact that my eyes behold no one except you. There are no others.”
Reaching out, he allowed strong and calloused fingers to wrap around the king's. The difference between them was evident, even in so simple a thing. The monarch's hand was smooth while his own was work worn and rough. They had led very different lives.
"Some things are too personal to entrust to someone else. Anything I say to you will come from me and no one else."
