boys can have thousands of coming of age movies, perv on girls, make jokes about finding their underwear and bras, but a kids movie mentioning periods (something very young girls will get and have to adjust to) is somehow dirty and taboo.

if you see a piece of media referencing a natural part of us growing up as sexual, that’s YOU being sick in the head, not us.

turning red is such a thinly veiled metaphor for the immigrant/diaspora experience of losing touch with your heritage. it’s all those stories of immigrant parents not teaching their children their native language in the hopes that they will assimilate easier into society. it hit me in such a particular way when the aunties all started singing in cantonese, and mei asked what they were saying.

the red panda means a lot of things in turning red, and i think one interpretation is the family’s relationship with their cultural roots. it’s spelled out in the movie already: when their family moved to a ‘new world’, and the blessing became a curse. as much as the red panda is a metaphor for self-expression in general, a message that’s easier to empathize with too, cultural identity still plays into it. the fact that they had to cut themselves off from it is so telling.

and! they literally tokenized themselves. ming and her family literally packaged and contained this huge part of their identity into something small and palatable for the society they want to exist in, a shallow connection to their culture that they can wear as an accessory. it’s exotic enough to be interesting but ultimately not impactful or disruptive to their current setting. i cannot stress enough how obsessed i am with this detail. they made little tokens to contain their pandas. they actually tokenized themselves.

I love that after watching Turning Red I can see exactly why incels and dudebros hate it so much because absolutely everything about it is such an unapologetically female and poc, specifically asian, experience that doesn't hold back

i’m gonna say it: into the spiderverse is an amazing movie & one of my personal favorites. the animation & music are outstanding. the storyline is impeccable.

but peni parker?

here’s what peni looks like in itsv: a weebified japanese schoolgirl. if you didn’t know, the peace sign is something asian tourists in america are known for, & that’s made fun of often. also, compared to the rest of the cast, she’s drawn in a different style that looks more like anime.

here’s what peni looks like in the comics. she valiantly takes over as the pilot of sp//dr when her father, the previous pilot, mysteriously dies. she also has to be bit by the radioactive spider that controls part of sp//dr in order to pilot it, & feels overwhelmed by this responsibility. 

just looking at these screenshots you can see the staggering difference between the two portrayals. i’m half chinese & half japanese, & spiderverse peni felt incredibly disrespectful. her wiki page puts it pretty well: “[she] takes on an anime aesthetic, is incredibly perky and is shown eating numerous candies and snacks in her robot.” she fits into many kind of racist tropes, including asian & nerdy, genki girl, gratuitous japanese, & kawaiiko. 

don’t get me wrong, i still love spiderverse. i’m not asking anyone to “cancel” it or whatever. i’m just asking you to keep in mind that spiderverse peni parker has been reduced to the “kawaii asian schoolgirl” trope, & that she’s far from the best east asian representation out there.
