A purple-ish shrimp with a huge white stripe on its back.

Not a single one of my original crew had any stripe. Ever.

The genes are geneing, my friends.

So I checked in on my big tank and

Look at this

This shrimp. A red-blue mix, it seems, comparing it to the other more pure red ones.

What an absolute stunner.

This pearly lavender color? Woah.

I never even hoped for that kind of thing to pop up in the gene pool.

Lots of cool stuff I didn’t expect, actually. Even if I had next to no expectations - just plopping em in and seeing what happens.

White stripes on backs all of a sudden, variations in brightness, spots on heads and pleopods, stripes…I could go on.

Right before I took this photo, these two were engaged in battle

Both are mixes, a lot of them are.

So shrimp racism is apparently not that common thankfully.

Also one of them tried to ride a larger blue one, which freaked out and they chased each other around for a while.

Enjoy some more, the bastard status of which I’m not 100% sure of. I do not know what the fuck that zebrafish in the background did to make its photo look like that

Welp, plopped them in with the rest.

Should start writing the paper soon, maybe make a little sum-up here or something.

Didn’t get the outcome I wanted, but that happens in science. And if that committee doesn’t accept that, then they clearly don’t know their shit and can go fuck themselves.

It was a ton of work and a lot of frustration, sure. But I had a lot of fun, learnt a lot about shrimp from observing them this close, and now there’s about 70 more little guys in this world. So overall a net positive.

No worries melkior, take your time with purple racism shrimp.

November 29th

Fished out all the little ones from tank 2. And even got the red one that evaded me back when I cleared out tank 1.

36 of them total, not counting the red one.

They vary in size quite a bit, no idea why.

The real deadline finally dropped. I’ll try counting the blue ones on the weekend I guess, and generally prepare to wrap this whole thing up.

I looked through tank 3 and…

Unfortunately, we have another death.

Knuckles is gone - I only found his lower body, so I’m guessing Meth ate the rest. I can’t imagine any freak accident in this tank, so it was probably old age or a failed molt.

Rest in peace (and pieces) buddy - again, you were a good one, and even left behind 30 little extensions of you. Thanks for that.

I found another dude, and plopped him in with some Horny Food. Will take name suggestions, and add he was quite feisty before I finally caught him.

Dad found and bought a breeding-stimulating feed. From what I’ve seen, aside from some normal nutrients and stuff, it has a shit ton of cholesterol - which is a precursor to hormones like testosterone and estrogen.

At least it is in humans.

Do shrimp hormones work the same way or-

Whatever. Tons of cholesterol =tons of energy in food = shrimp feel better = shrimp want to fuck.

I’ll give it to them this evening. We’ll see if being a fat and hopefully horny fuck beats shrimp racism. Cheering em on.

November 5th

One grain in 2, two in 3, max amount in the rest.

Quite a loss of appetite in 3. Haven’t seen Knuckles in a while now. I’m gonna search the tank once I’m back home.

Someone molted in 4, not sure who.

Also, I’m more certain now Cuse has eggs. I shone a light at her at multiple angles, and the shadow looks like it’s eggs.
