Has it really been a year since I’ve posted?

I guess, between the end of the Siege series and a lot of real life changes, I never quite came back here.

But I’ve found something new that I adore and want to share. This is from the short story collection Era of Ruin, technically a Siege of Terra book. It’s a short story collection that gives snapshots of what happened after the Siege, or in some cases during the Siege in the less-glamorous parts of the fight.

The short story is called “Fragments (All We Have Left)” and it features Aphone. Remember Aphone? The Silent Sister who was Jenetia Krole’s second in command? And some theorize, more?

Aphone is Absolutely Magnificent. This story is worth a read but if you don’t intend to, here’s her shining moment below:

The book is still well worth the read even if you know what’s coming because it is so well done.

Mortarion landed on Galaspar, a world whose ruling class was horrifically oppressive. Easily worse than anything Corax experienced, or even Angron. The people were “labor units” who were drugged out of any sense of identity and literally ground into the gears of the planet’s productivity.

He did what the Death Guard do, and wiped out all the overlords. They tried their best to avoid casualties among the workers but it wasn’t always possible.

After the compliance, Mortarion set the populace to a task: tally the dead. Each person should count the bodies of an allotted number of their dead oppressors, so they can be reassured they are all dead.

Enter Sanguinius and Horus to chastise Mortarion. First they ask why he didn’t leave any of the ruling class alive to form a planetary government. He shows them enough security cam footage to prove his point.

Then Sanguinius criticizes the tally. Says these are human, they’ve been through horrible trauma, and you’re re-traumatizing them for who knows how long. Morty is initially pissed at Sang’s self righteousness but then begins to doubt himself.

They leave. Enter the woman who retained enough self awareness to be curious and hopeful about the Death Guard and tried to get close to them, and ended up losing limbs to phosphex.

Their decorations are haphazard and “looked more like the nest of a magpie than a raven.”

Revisiting one of my favorite books in the series, The Unremembered Empire, and realizing just how much of a clueless dork Guilliman is. I mean that as a compliment, of course :)

Apparently, Guilliman thinks he’s the only one who appreciates culture. Then recommends to Prayto a play we’ve all heard of:

Thought this was interesting to calculate how old each of the Primarchs were when found, and damn I suppose the reason Horus might've been the favourite was because he was actually raised by the Emperor meanwhile almost everyone else was found long into their adulthood.

“The Butcher’s Nails,” a short story by ADB in the Legacies of Betrayal collection, is a worthwhile read. The World Eaters and Word Bearers are on their Shadow Crusade, and the fleets almost fight each other over Angron’s unwillingness to stick to the plan. Great interactions and banter between Angron and Lorgar, and we get Lotara firing the ursus claws.

But this bit raised my eyebrows. 

Lorgar. Ahem. How do you know what Curze’s bedchamber looks like?
