Honestly the Reckoners trilogy truly has some of Sanderson’s best setting work. Newcago is a city made entirely out of steel, from what used to be glass in windows to a large chunk of Lake Michigan, bathed in eternal starless night. Babylon Restored is manhattan but sunk so that only the tops of skyscrapers peek out from water, lit by glowing spraypaint and fruit. Ildithia is Atlanta turned into a city of moving salt (honestly it has a similar idea to canticle in that everybody has to move frequently). It’s just such good evocative work!

I’ve been rereading Steelheart, which is a non-cosmere Sanderson book that follows the basic premise of a group of assassins trying to kill an evil Superman-like. The philosophy present in it is so interesting and I honestly think it’s one of Sanderson’s better works (the rest of the series is not as good but oh well).

There’s a lot of play with whether power is inherently corrupting and whether people can stop being human, either through their own actions or through being granted superhuman abilities.

Beyond that there’s also themes around whether people should settle for a lesser evil or be willing to cause harm to create a better future. Should the Reckoners kill Steelheart because of all the harm he’s done, or should they leave him alive so that his domain remains stable and safer than other areas?

And there’s really potent themes around abuse, authoritarianism and fear. Spoilers for the book if you haven’t read it! It’s really good and you should try it!

The whole idea of this evil, authoritarian dictator who murders people with impunity only being weak to those who don’t fear him has so many cool thematic resonances. People like him, who hurt and kill simply because they have the power to, really do fear those who are willing to stand up to them and fight. To not cower in fear and hide when they are focused on. I love it and find it so cool and potent.

Oh the format is actually pretty interesting. The combination of second person choose-your-own-adventure or visual novel narration and using links named after an action to switch panels creates a vibe of being a player in a video game with no choices. It also makes the idea of having videogame mechanics for the character less jarring. I’m actually excited to see how the format is used going forward!

I can't believe this is how I'm finding out that I got a scam forklift cert.

I took the cargo ops class at school but my teacher explained that it doesn't give a certification and I'd only be okay for ship's crane and the school forklifts. she said I could take an online exam and get my cert. I paid 60 bucks.

I'm googling and I'm seeing a lot of resources saying that the online programs cover the classroom part of the exam but not the in person practical aspect.

so, I emailed OSHA, and they said that so long as I live and work in California, there's no such thing as forklift certification. I have to be told how to do it every time I get the job.

Update: I took a certification class in shipboard Material Handling Equipment at my federal job. *now* I'm forklift certified, but only on ships and piers and only for this company, but also rated to forklift explosives and hazardous materials. Also I'm a woman now.
