30 days of Carry On - Day 10
Favorite chapter of wayward son that is not 41 - chapter 64
Funny enough, chapter 41 isnāt my favorite because itās when we see Simon and Baz suffering so much despite also seeing their love for each other. Itās sad love thatās on the verge of breaking. No, this chapter is much better.
First off, itās Shepās narration, so we get an outside view of Simon, Baz, and Penny, as well as a little of Agatha. And that view is just :chefs kiss:. Shep watches as they tend to each otherās wounds and care for each other, as well as experiences that care when Baz holds the door open for him at the end of the chapter, inviting him into the group both literally and figuratively. This is possibly the biggest acceptance because Simon is the human equivalent of a Golden Retriever and Penny canāt walk away from a puzzle. Agatha is indifferent. But Bazā¦Baz shuts people out on principle and is incredibly unapproachable with the masks he puts up. For him to both verbally dress down, but also show intimacy through being the one to heal him and *then* be the one to literally hold open the door for Shep is really something. And I donāt think itās lost on Shep either.
I also love seeing Bazās walls crumble, and we see that big time in these pages. He is literally the mom friend, which is hysterical to me, BUT HE IS. This dude probably has snacks and tissues in his pockets somewhere. He tries to feed you when you walk in his house (weāve seen it. Itās too late, vamp-boy, we know your secrets). He is SOFT AS FUCK despite the image he tries to maintain and its never as obvious as it is when he NOT ONLY uses the mom tone to drag Penny across the seat to him so he doesnāt smush Simon, but also when he casts ākiss it betterā on Penny. And he does it without question; he loves and cares for his friends and partner. Itās *precious* and he is so good and sweet and we get to see itā¦SHEP gets to see it!!!
We also see how innate and natural Simonās affection is for Baz. He wonāt let him go. He has a vice grip on him until he literally loses consciousness and passes out. Thatās different from the desperation and doubt weāve seen; this is certainty. This is the moment that establishes that Simon still wants him despite all the doubt and that his knee-jerk reaction and that is safety line is still Baz.
And of course, Penny is absolutely killing it with her attention and care, keeping both of them safe after their landing and then getting them into the car. She puts Simon before herself, and even tries to heal Baz first before accepting his healing spells instead.
I just love how much raw love we see in this incredibly short chapter between the three of them. Itās so pure and genuine and we donāt often get treated to this view. Honestly, thatās part of why I loved this book so much in the first place - sure, itās rife with trauma and pain, but it bares that love so vividly.
