I gotta say as someone whose introduction to Sports was the pwhl, it's really fun how easy it is to get to know players when you can see their faces and expressions and bodies and tattoos and how they personalize their game kit with different shoes and gloves and pants and sleeves and all. Amazing how easy it feels to get to recognize players and a bit of their personalities when they're not covered in padding and wearing a cage over their face.

this is the part where i reveal that i am an enormous nerd about technological developments around communication...like, "framed patent drawing of the Marconi wireless on my wall" nerd about it. so when i came across Sara Ann MacClure McLagan's name in my research, i knew she was the vancouver namesake.

born in ireland, macclure's family immigrated to British Columbia when she was still a toddler. when she was a teen, her father put a telegraph repeater station in the family home and sara quickly became proficient in morse code. by 19, she was the office manager in victoria, an extraordinarily unusual position for any woman to hold, never mind a young unmarried woman.

sara married printer john mclagan in 1884 and in 1888, they founded the Vancouver Daily World. while john was alive, sara was not super involved in the running of the paper, but when he died in 1901, she took over as managing editor and publisher. the paper became immensely popular in western canada and sara sold it in 1905. she continued to be involved in journalism, particularly writing and reporting about things that impacted and mattered to women. she traveled to france after Armistice Day to help the sick and wounded of world war one, winning the red cross's "cross of sacrifice." she died in 1924.

design! in keeping with other vancouver sports, blue is a primary color. i chose a lighter powder blue because 1) the heights have dibs on navy with light blue accent and 2) it looks clean. secondary color is bronze à la the pwhl's goldeneyes and the tertiary accent is a muted blush pink. the name "dispatch" references both sara's work as a telegrapher and as a journalist. she was a lady who wanted everyone to have access to information and that deserves a raised glass.

i went back and forth on whether a telegraph diagram was too complex or obscure for a logo and then remembered i am doing this for my own delight and nothing delights me more than schematics. so the left chest of the uniforms has a telegraph with morse code "vancouver" above and "dispatch" below and then the circular logo centers that diagram. i toyed with using the initials "vd" in a logo but as a medical history person my immediate association is venereal disease and assigning vancouver the clap feels rude.

this is one that i would hundy p purchase, either a jersey or a hat with the logo, if only they were real

I’m gonna tell the bloggers on here the same thing that I wish the announcers understood. While the WPBL is historic and important for women and for feminism, it is also a professional sports league.

If the only thing you have to say about this professional sports league is that it’s historic and important you are doing a disservice to these athletes and perpetuating the idea that women’s sports are not good enough to be watchable as sports. We treat men sports like a standard form of entertainment, and we treat women’s sports like a moral obligation. That’s not fair to the women.

We’ve done the history thing we’re doing the historic moments absolutely, we’re also watching talented athletes playing the game of baseball.

Talk about the baseball.
