Draupadi and Anthy - A Brief Analysis/Braindump
I don’t know how much Be-Papas researched into Hindu mythos, so this might not have any credence at all. HOWEVER, I’ve been having this thought for a while and was wondering what Utena Tumblr would think?
So, episode 3 and its connection to Draupadi’s humiliation in the Mahabharata. For context, Draupadi is the wife of all five of the Pandava brothers (long story) and she, in very Rose Bride fashion, is treated like an object and is lost in a bet to the king Duryodhana. In the text, she is deemed a “whore” for having five husbands (first of all, not even her fault, second of all, sound familiar? She’s little more than a status symbol to all of them as well..) and the king orders her to be humiliated by stripping her. She prays to the lord Krishna to save her, and he makes her dupatta (the scarf/shawl in some Indian clothing) endless to the point it makes it impossible to disrobe her of it.
Anthy also gets humiliated out of animosity by a figure jealous of her romantic interest (Nanami to Utena —> king to husbands? Kind of.. Nanami also exerts a lot of power and has a lot of followers in this situation), also by stripping, as apparently the worst thing that could happen to a woman is having her purity stripped away. And Utena saves her by creating a dress out a tablecloth, which oddly resembles a shawl/dupatta? Maybe I’m making connections out of nothing.
Interesting that Utena is being portrayed as a godlike figure in that case. Not to mention that Krishna is an AVATAR of an actual god, similar to how Utena is like a second coming of Dios in a way? Perpetuating the ideals of a god? And DIOS IN SPANISH MEANS GOD? Am I making sense? Or am I word vomiting?
The five husbands are relevant in a way that… remember how the student council has five duelists (interchanging both Utena and Nanami.. maybe Utena can be paralleled to Arjuna) who all use Anthy for their own desires, even non romantic or sexual in nature? And how she’s basically in a blunt rotation with all of them? Draupadi is basically in a blunt rotation with all of her husbands since she’s stuck being married to all of them. Waiting for a god (A PRINCELY IDEAL!! AN IDEALISTIC VERSION OF A GOOD MAN!!) who may or may not come and save them? AHHH
I hope this made sense.. my bindi post had me brainrotted about Anthy’s parallels to Indian and Hindu culture.. if you have any questions feel free to ask away! And PLEASEE add your thoughts if you have any <3

This is a really fascinating analysis! I 100% believe that the tablecloth Utena gives to Anthy was meant to resemble a dupatta! While Anthy and Akio’s status as south asians is not as thought out as most of the show (being a reference at best and a tool of orientalism at worst), I would love to see more Seasian perspectives on RGU and tying it into Hindu mythos!

How Utena deconstructs nostalgia.
One of the main things, several characters in Rgu, have in common. Is how the characters romanticize their childhood and memories.
Form Miki remembering Kozue being great in piano, and having curly hair like Anthy, when in fact. Kozue was always terrible at playing the piano, and she had a sharper hair style.
Or how Utena remembered her ''prince'' comforting her and giving her words of courage to keep on living after her parents death. Which made her desire to meet and marry that prince one day, When it was in fact her own sense of wanting to rescue Anthy, that gave her the motivation to keep going. She didn't want to become a prince, to meet her prince, she wanted to become a prince to rescue a strange girl she didn't know who was suffering.
The other perfect example that even went more extreme is in the Black Rose saga. The arc's villain who is being manipulated by Akio,
He competently twist his own memories of what happened back then, to the point, it's delusional. The person he really is in love with, is not the same person he claims to be in love with, his true goal, who really stated the fire, his memories are false
almost every other character holds onto to their memory of something they cling for, Utena wants to meet her prince her ''true love'', Miki wants to return to the garden, Nanami wants to remain Touga's little sister forever, Saionji wants the equal friendship he once had with Touga to be the same again, Juri is in love with her idealized version of Shiori that was never there. Mikage's memories have become so far removed from reality that he's lost to them.
Akio however is an adult who knows the truth, and uses the other characters love for the past, to manipulate them to do his bidding, with the fake promise of making them 'feel' good as they once felt.
Anthy being one of the most best written character in the cast is aware of the truth yet, is unable to change and move on from her own nostalgia (Until the last episode)
Rgu teaches us that we all look to the past trough rose colored glasses, (hey ROSE ) but that we can't become really happy if we don't move on.
Anthy finds the strength to leave Akio, and to look for Utena,
Juri has giving up on her romanticized version of Shiori, they are repairing their friendship, Shiori is making the effort, maybe they will become an item
Miki is no longer looking for a person who can replace his sister
Nanami has mellowed out and no longer idolizes her brother in an unhealthy manner
Saionji and Touga are repairing their friendship
Utena has removed herself from Akio's world, she no longer seeks that false memory and is out there somewhere, waiting for Anthy, so they can have a cup of tea together.
I always wondered why inc/st was so common in revolutionary girl utena. What i mean is what are the chances that three seperate characters had a very specific brother/sister abuse dynamic in the same school. Akio and Anthy, Nanami and Touga, miki and kozue.
And then I realized, the students at othori academy aren't there just because. Theyre all stuck in a metaphoric timeloop that akio created so he can play prince/god. Obviously hes going to prey on students who have had a history of this specific kind of abuse cause he knows how to control them better. Its not lost on me that Miki and Touga also happen to be in the student council (a role closer to akio right after the teachers) while their sisters are either regular students or are able to get into that role through them only. I wouldn't be surprised if most of the students at ohtori are inc/st survivors
But what I find fascinating is that there is another type of inc/st that Rgu talks about and its parental inc/st. Specifically committed by fathers
Especially in the cases with touga and Kozue/miki.
With kozue and miki its a little hard to spot. They dont outright tell you theyre being abused by their parents. Just that they both deeply despise them, as seen with how anthy is represented as the mother figure there. And within the context of how thats shown symbolically in othori. Kozue is hypersexual and is being groomed by akio (a significantly older man) and miki is being groomed by his music teacher (another grown man). Those are clues that they have probably had a history with that kind of abuse.
And in the episode that spot lights Miki and Kozue. Anthy says this
And then for a split second it cuts to:
My thoughts are raw and all over the place but im gonna just leave this here for me to look at later when my synapses decide to play connect the dots a little faster
anthy as a madoka style witch
I hate the clingy incestous little sister Archetype so much in anime because nothings ever done with it outside of it being a male gaze fetish. Like wow ok the 50th little sister competing and hating with the other female cast while the older brother is uncomfortable and plays dumb and just HAPPENS to accidently be in situations where he sexualizes her. Im sure it'll do something the next 50 times I see it.
But one of my favorite characters of all time is Nanami Kiryuu. The concept of a girl who idolizes her brother and does the whole clingy incestous little sister song and dance, not nessicarily because shes incestously attracted to him but because she feels like if it wasnt for her connection to him no one would love her the way that they love him.
And them being blood related siblings is the only reason that not only everyone loves her, but her own brother loves her too. Like she genuinely feels she is so worthless and unlovable on her own merit that she needs to cling to touga for people to care about her. Like you would think in a situation where its revealed two characters like this are adoptive siblings nanami would be overjoyed so she can be with toga. But she isnt. Shes angry and distraught and in denial that that is her blood relative.
And then she is presented the opportunity to have sex with (and i say this loosely RGU clearly plays what happens as implied assault) touga she backs away in disguist because. Shes not attracted to him. She just wants someone who is guaranteed to love her no matter what. And your family is supposed to. Because thats your blood. They are the only people who are guaranteed to love no matter what. They should anyway. And she sees those lines blurred in real time by touga and thats not what she wants. She just wants him to care about her.
It breaks my heart to think about it.
love so deep it lets us two be free / you're part of me
its all 'be gay do crime' until a black person starts making allusions to drugs or sex or god forbid VIOLENCE and then it turns out nobody can handle anything more hardcore than downloading illegal torrents of hamilton
This post is about racism. This post is about racism and antiblackness. This post is not about how cool YOU are for doing crimes or about how much you hate 'antis' or how bad tesla sucks. This post is about how ostensibly progressive white people will clutch pearls and moralize about not listening to rap or engaging with black art or culture because it seemingly condones drugs, or violence, or is overly sexual, while having no issue with those topics in other, non-black contexts. There are conversations to be had about the topics surrounding this but in the meantime the original post is One Sentence and I'm not convinced most of the commenters in the past few days even read it.
Revolution! Revolution!
The people clamor outside a gilded castle in the sky. They were promised silver chariots and golden rings by the princess, the reviled woman who stole leadership from her naive brother.
Revolution! Revolution!
The Prince performed miracles, he could turn a grain of rice into buckets of wealth, oh reviled Princess, she wanted those powers for her own and stole him away! He lays at the bottom of a sparkling river, buried and still.
Revolution! Revolution!
The people are starving, their food is nothing but a way to pacify them, the princess surely is poisoning it! What was promised must be given!
Revolution, Revolution.
That night, there is a knock at her door.
In my mind Susato Mikotoba is a beloved queer historical icon in the Ace Attorney universe. There's a really good, if melodramatic, historical romance movie about her dressing as a man to save the love of her life in the courtroom, people are blissfully unaware this was done when she was only 16. There's a Takarazuka-esque Musical about it in Japanifornia. Ryutaro is a lot of people's childhood crush. Select circles of the internet go insane about 2 or 3 documents Rei/Haori wrote as a student because there are brief references to what their relationship may have been
There are huge amounts of people who think the events are largely fictional, and are only aware of Susato Mikotoba The Character rather than her actual legal contributions or any relation to Ryunosuke, Kazuma, Sholmes, or Iris.
Some podcast or YouTube channel does an episode on "the real Susato Mikotoba" for a pride month special and the world falls in love again with her contributions to law, science, medicine, you name it, because she absolutely spent her entire adult life outclassing herself over and over again
my "i love you"s were all lies too

Ryunosuke loses his shit (rlhs) after what happened to him and starts murdering people with kazuma aka evil ryu au <3. Also kazuma in a collar because theyre recreating the professor case and kazuma is the assassin or the hound. (I am going insane over this)
Oh this might be crazy.
