I’d hate to be a party pooper, but as a Native woman, this all makes me seriously uncomfortable.

If the Hogwarts mascots were a lion, a snake, a badger, and a raven, all real animals, why do these new ones have to be religious creatures? Also, the Hogwarts houses all had fanciful made up names but these are legitimate names of creatures Indigenous peoples believed in. Doesn’t that seem a little ethnocentric to anyone?

And the whole “indigenous magic but i can’t say which tribe” bullshit? Seriously? No, it’s not like we aren’t all thrown into a cultural stereotype by white people all the damn time.

So glad I never got into Harry Potter, or this could have been heartbreaking.

I don’t have any energy left to rant more about this entire shitbundle of “no, leave your hands outta my culture” that is Rowling’s new venture. So I’ll just second what other Native folks are saying.

And because it’s come up many, many times already: This is not the same as using Greek or Norse myths in fantasy, and if you try and make them equivalent you’re absolutely blind. Native Americans are still alive and still practicing their faith despite centuries of outside oppression; a wealthy white lady from across the Atlantic saying that all of their (“their” being a vague “all Natives are one culture” mess, which we’ll get into elsewhere) actual beliefs are just as much a part of her made-up pretend universe as all of her fictional nonsense is immensely harmful. It reeks of what can only be described as cultural imperialism.

This might be slightly more excusable if she’d actually done any research on actual Native American tribes beyond just cribbing from various disparate sources or if she’d been bold enough to say “Jesus was a wizard,” but that might actually offend the people she cares about.

It frustrates me SO MUCH that Rowling is so great at world-building, but only within the tight little sphere of what she’s immediately familiar with.  Like, if you took the amount of historical ties and significant terms/names and all of the connections made in the book ‘verse and applied it to the history of North American wizardry?  That shit could have been MIND-BLOWING.  She could have gone into dozens of different Native wizarding cultures and how they connect and how they’re different, she could have talked about Chinese wizards working to build railroads, she could have given a history of magically-fortified slave rebellions, she could have discussed vodoun and how it got twisted by the no-maj world, she could have just talked about how the North American brand of wizardry is as varying and complex as its geography and population.

But no, we get a halfhearted attempt at being inclusive that wads up every Native American culture into one stereotype-ridden one, while she gives the history of Ilvermorny - founded by an Irish immigrant, mind you, so she’s going back to her comfort zone - four times as much writing space as the entire rest of NA wizarding history combined. 

Rowling.  For fuck’s sake, up your research game.  Or hell, hire people to do your research for you if you don’t want to take the time & effort.  You’ve got the money for it, invest some of that money into making the world you created better and more believable.  This shit is lazy and disappointing.

Black North Carolina Student Passes Drug Test,no drugs found, still gets suspended for smelling like weed

Even though school authorities never found marijuana on her and she passed a drug test, North Carolina student Jakayla Johnson received a five-day suspension because she smelled like weed.

Young black women face a unique struggle against severe punishment in schools. Extreme punishments like Jakayla’s lead to what some researchers call “pushout,” and interactions with the criminal justice system. Black girls are six times more likely to get suspended than white girls. Racial disparities in punishment are greater for black girls than black boys.

Jakayla’s case shows that, even when a black girl does nothing wrong, punishment can still put her at risk for being pushed out of the school system.

More than a dozen Bronx girls gone missing

More than a dozen teen girls gone missing raising fear in the community.

Every other week one or more girls just vanished off the streets and people are scared about their loved ones. Most of the girls are colored and this raises even more questions.

Police says that it might be a  forced prostitution.

Six of the teens were reported missing this month alone, including two who vanished June 23.

The list of missing girls released Wednesday by Councilman Andy King is long enough to fill the roster of a softball team.

1)15-year-old Karla Gros

2) Sierra Rivera, 14, who was last seen on June 2 near White Plains Road.

3) Ashley Bissal, 16, was last seen on June 23, leaving her Grand Concourse apartment.

4) Emily Arroyo, 15, has been missing since April 26, when she was supposed to come home from a juvenile program on Bergen Ave.

5) Jada Jordan, 12, was last seen about 8:30 a.m. on March 23 inside Bronx-Manhattan Seventh Day Adventist School on 1440 Plimpton Ave. in Mount Eden, police said.

6) Miracle Mann was last seen at 3:15 p.m. on June, 23, 2016 leaving her residence.

7)  12-year-old Jada Jordan, who is missing from her Bronx, New York home. She was last seen March 21, 2016.

This is our duty to help. If you know anything about these girls ,please,contact the police!

There are so many hate crimes happening every day and there are so many crazy people on the streets, so please stay woke!
