Down the Highway: The Life of Bob Dylan - book review
Here's my review of Howard Sounes' biography of Bob Dylan. It was cut from the LA Record due to space. Don't know where to place it this late in the game (book published in May 2011)... enjoy!
Down The Highway: The Life of Bob Dylan (Howard Sounes)
By Alex Zane
What’s the big deal about Bob Dylan? Who is this guy that John Lennon, Allen Ginsburg, Joe Strummer and your 10th grade English teacher all think is so great? Is he a crusty relic of the 60s folk rock scene, a rip off artist or one of the major voices of all time? Down The Highway: The Life Of Bob Dylan places the man firmly in the pantheon of great artists. Sounes’ biography chronicles Dylan’s youth and rapid rise to stardom, his secretive life, prolific writing and nonstop touring. This extensive biography touches on the main notes of Dylan’s long career, wading through a wealth of documented information and personal recollections of family, friends and acquaintances. Although Dylan declined to be included as a source, this is his definitive story, so far. He certainly gathered no moss with his life and music: the Beatles, the Grateful Dead, the Band, the Rolling Stones and basically anyone who was ever anyone in music for the past 50 years make an appearance. By turns, Dylan comes across as arrogant sot, a womanizer and an occasional pretender. He also has boatloads of talent, charisma and a unique way with words. No matter his long and winding road, detours and crashes, the enigmatic poet of rock and roll deserves his place in the sun. The past decade has brought about a resurgence of Dylan creativity, with some excellent albums and ventures into new formats; that’s what’s ‘Blowin In The Wind’, my friend.
