European Contact

In the spring of 1540, Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto entered Cherokee Nation in southeastern North America. This was the first known encounter of Cherokee people and Europeans. Although Cherokees maintained their traditions for many years after the encounter, trade with Europeans dramatically changed Cherokee existence. By the late 1600s, Cherokees were entering into trade relationships with Europeans who ventured into their lands. These relationships brought cloth, metal, and firearms to the tribe. In the late 1700s, Cherokee Nation was surrounded by warfare between tribes and European colonists. The French and Indian War (1754-1763) and the American Revolutionary War (1775-1783) pulled natives into international conflict. In each war, Cherokees, and other tribes, sided with the entity that could offer the most beneficial alliance. Source: Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian
