Mikah had used the party to her advantage, cracking open the safe and taking the jewels inside without having to worry about anyone hearing the noise. When Mikah heard footsteps coming down the hall, she closed up the safe and pocked the jewels. The painting had just rested against the safe when the door opened again. Mikah pretended to be admiring the painting when the door closed and the man spoke.
“I’m sorry, what?” She asked, turning to face him. “Did you want to take a look at it? Quite a piece isn’t it?” Mikah smiled and moved to the side. Concern over the jewels had her heart racing as she tried to think of a way out. The safe was empty and the jewels in her pocket. She needed out before he opened it.
“Quite a piece of shit, yes,” Alec agreed, barely glancing at the painting for a second. No, he was more curious about the stranger standing in front of him. She wasn’t part of the family that lived in this house; he knew their faces from the files. This one wasn’t familiar at all.
A stray strand of hair hung in his brow, tickling him, and he brushed it away in a swift motion. “Have you seen what’s behind it, though? Beautiful.”
“The wall is quite plain.” Mikah mused, a smile on her lips. So he was interested in the safe. Well, pity for him. “Not much of an upgrade from the painting. Excuse me.” She said, nodding in his direction before exiting the room. It wouldn’t be long before he opened the safe and noticed it empty. There was something off about him, something that made Mikah’s skin crawl. Working as a thief meant she met a lot of dangerous characters but none had ever made her feel off.
That man in the room. He was dangerous. The sooner she left the house, the better. Slipping out through the front door, she headed down the street, looking back at the room with the safe. She could barely make the man out in the window but she couldn’t turn away. Part of her wanted to see what he would do once he realised he had been bested.
