Hi, I'm on mobile so if this is in your FAQ, I'm sorry. So I live in a small town with no community theater, and I'm a theatre Geek with no chance to be on stage. However, I'm moving to a bigger town with tons of community theater programs that all look great. However, I've never gotten the chance to audition for anything, so how does one put together an audition?

It’s a lot more simple then you think! The first rule I always tell people however is that it is very unlikely you will be expected to do anything that has not been instructed.

I’m going to use my latest audition as an example. I was auditioning for the role of “Little girl” in the witches of eastwick. I was sent the audition piece I was expected to sing and I was told on the audition notice that I would have to do a dance audition, but I was not expected to learn anything. Never in my experience have I been expected to to anything that I have not been instructed to do.

If you would like to take sheet music just in case, it doesn’t hurt, but if you have not been told specifically to provide your own music, and you haven’t been told to prepare a song it probably means that they are going to teach you something once you are there. So for example if you are going to audition for Maria in west side story, then sure, feel free to take sheet music for a song just in case if it gives you piece of mind, but make sure you know I feel pretty, somewhere, I have a love, one hand one heart, and tonight becasue it is more likely you will be asked to sing something from the show.

Remember to dress to impress, but also appropriately. Wear something that will make you stand out, but also something that will be comfortable to dance and sing and act in (obviously this is dependent on what you’re doing in your audition) and work your assets. Another example for me, I have big natural curls, and I bleach my hair. If I had my hair straight then I look like every other blonde girl in the room, but if I leave it natural so it’s big and curly and put a headband in with a nice decoration, then I will be remembered as the girl with the big curly blonde hair and they will also be more likely to remember what you did well as they will not be thinking about other people.

TAKE WATER take fifty bottles of water if you must, you will need it. I also personally recommend liquorice for your voice - especially if you’re singing.

I have Footloose auditions, and I want to do Don't Rain On My Parade, but I'm not positive, suggestions?

yeah I love that song but it’s not a great idea for footloose. I was in footloose so ya gotta trust me.

First of all it’s pretty overdone anyway, but second o all, it is nothing like a feel of the show. It’s a modern, mostly Jukebox musical, so you’ll need something more rock like or pop like. Or, anything with a cowboy feel. Also if you’re going for characters in particular then different songs will suit different things.

For general, I would suggest Bonnie’s part of the first song in Bonnie and Clyde but I’m not sure about whats it’s called (the “Clara Bow” bit) Something from we will rock you like I want it all or somebody to love, or something from rock of ages. Basically, you want something that sounds classic rock, or something that sounds hoe down.

If you’re going for Ariel, try Dyin ain’t so bad from Bonnie and Clyde, out tonight from rent or

If you’re going for Rusty, try so much better from legally blonde, out tonight from rent or I you can manage it, maybe I’m alive from next to normal

If you’re going for Vi, then something more mature, like don’t cry for me Argentina (overdone, but closer to the role) or something else from Evita. I dreamed a dream (again, over done but it works) or I miss the mountains from next to normal (I would suggest that one most strongly)

But yeah, defiantly don’t do Don’t rain on my parade, it doesn’t fit with the feel of the show, so remember, classic rock and/or hoe down. Good luck! - Ivy

MOST IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT YET

As of 3PM EST today, all sheet music links will be taken down.

This includes any ask that was answered with links, and the sheet music masterpost. As far as I know, there is no way to stop it circulating around tumblr and for that I am very sorry, but it will not be on the blog any longer.

We will be continuing as an audition advice/song/monologue blog, so you can still send messages about auditions. Any messages from now on requesting sheet music will be deleted. The URL of the blog is being changed to “theatre-audition-help”.

Some questions you may have:

Why?

A multitude of reasons. I’ve sort of hated myself for running this blog for about a year because I am becoming a composer/lyricist of my own musicals, and I know I would hate the idea of someone giving away my sheet music for free when I worked hard to write it and deserve money for it.

But now has created the perfect opportunity to actually get rid of it, because I’ve been caught by the NPMA. NPMA is the National Music Publisher’s Association, and from what I know they are a sort of conglomerate of some of the big publishers (Alfred’s, Hal Leonard, etc). They’ve been kind enough to message me requesting that all links be taken down, which is much less scary than my constant nightmare of the FBI breaking down my door and arresting me for piracy and throwing me in jail for 9 years, leaving me unable to finish high school and go to college and start my work as a theatre/psychology major using theatre and music to educate the world on mental illness through plays, seminars, and drama therapy.

But overall, piracy is bad and I’ve railed against bootlegs nonstop for two years and been a huge hypocrite so now I can stop that. The composers deserve every cent from each person who likes their music enough to buy the sheet music.

Where will the sheet music go?

Well some of the links I had were directing to other sites, and I have no idea what fate awaits those websites but probably a similar one to my own. The rest of the links were uploads that I made after scanning my own sheet music, and those will disappear and the hard copies will continue to reside above my piano on various shelves, because I bought them in their original format.

Where can I get sheet music now?

Your local music store, preferably, or Amazon.com, or online sites that you can pay a few dollars to download the music in pdf format; anywhere that your money is going to the composer. I suggest music store though because apparently the one near me is starting to die out and music stores should never die out so please keep your local music store in business. I know money is scarce for some people but it’s not that much, and if it is too much money for you to spend, best not buy it at all because sheet music is not a necessity.

Can I copy the entire sheet music post now and repost it on my own blog?

No. Please please do not do this. I am taking this down not only because I have been told to by the NMPA but also because it is wrong. So please don’t repost it, I want it gone.

Is there someone to be angry at?

No. We are following copyright laws, and copyright laws are there to protect the artist.

Will I be in trouble for downloading the sheet music?

No. I’m not an expert on copyright law, but no one is at fault here but me and I will make sure of that. You are not going to get in trouble for having downloaded sheet music in the past.

Hi, in regards to someone asking about using songs from ITW for a Shrek audition- don't do it. You should never use Sondheim in auditions unless told to, because it is hard for the accompanists to sight read and also it is all terribly overdone. Especially ITW. It was really overdone before the movie, but now it's only worse. I've learned this from personal experience in the professional world.

I really wish I knew how to do that but I only know the very very very basic technique in blog design, and I once tried to do that when we first changed the finding sheet music rule and was utterly perplexed. Renee will be changing the title soon though so that should clear some things up.

Do you have tips on stage presence?

Hello,

Stage presence is one of those things that is just natural. You can definitely work towards it, but a lot of the time it’s easier if you naturally have it. The only tips I can give you are that no matter what you do, do it big. If you practice being a large presence then it’ll come to you over time.

That should be perfectly fine. I understand your apprehension because of the recent movie but just because the movie came out doesn’t mean that the song or the musical is of a lesser quality.
