The Good Place is an excellent show for many reasons, but one that doesn't really get talked about enough, probably because of how the season 1 twist obscures it, is that the 'No Exit'-esque "Hell is Other People" scenario for an afterlife of eternal torture is an avante garde experiment from an Auteur demon who's trying to convince the other demons of his Vision while they're like "idk man flaying genitals works really good"

i wish more people talked about the political undertones in the phm book.

What i've been thinking about recently is the way Andy "Apolitical" Weir hardcore stereotypes each nationality he represents. the Chinese officials are spying on our scientists. the Russian officers are 80% vodka. this Dutch/German is stern. whatever the fuck was going on with that Canadian. like ok my man we GET it. even if we didn't know anything about Weir, we can clearly deduce this book was written by an American from its sheer lack of self-awareness, especially when it comes to stereotypes about Americans-- you ever talk to a non-american who witnessed american behavior in the wild?

Andy Weir (probably) pictures himself, and by extension Grace, as the Normal and Default, and so he doesn't portray any American quirks or stereotypical behavior (other than the "Thinking In Imperial", which doesn't really extend to outside of Grace's head) However, in doing so, Weir is actually inadvertently portraying an American who is totally oblivious to his own behavior and biases. Which is, I would say, the prototypical American behavior. Weir just didn't know he was writing a stereotypical American because he was just portraying himself a Regular Guy.

so by criticizing the american-centric mindset, I'm sorry to say, Weir has, on a technicality, stumbled into being pretty woke. Unfortunate. he won't let it happen again

In The Homecoming Job, Cpl. Perry mentions finding Nate on the internet. And my immediate reaction to that was, “It’s early days; Hardison must not have had to scrub their entire existence off the internet yet. Still seems like a bad plan to advertise, though.”

But then we get to the briefing room scene, and Hardison mentions that he’s got his system “running heuristic data crawls all over the news sites to find our clients.” And suddenly I was picturing, like, ultra-targeted facebook ads.

Like, imagine scrolling through social media and alongside “eliminate belly fat” and “this one weird trick” and “hot singles in your alarmingly specific locale” and “make a bajillion dollars working from home” you see “Feeling duped and helpless? Have you or someone you love been denied justice after being screwed over by evil rich bastards? Did the police throw up their hands in exaggerated helplessness and say there was nothing they could do to help (seriously, why’d you go to the police they never help in these situations)? You might just need a little… Leverage.” 

And then you’re pretty sure you didn’t even click on that weirdo ad but your browser is still taking you through to their page, and… Hmm. Actually, it might be worth contacting these “Leverage Consulting” people after all. Because really, what have you got to lose?

After school care pulled me aside about my child dropping an f-bomb “without remorse” and I put on my concerned face and nodded a bunch.

Apparently he was building something with a younger kid “who really looks up to him and is just starting to make friends” and said “Hey, you’re really fucking good at this.” which is, in my estimation, really a parenting victory.

every so often i remember how awesome the modern interconnected multicultural world is. i grew up getting to hear fairy tales from all over the world. africa, asia, europe, america. everywhere in between. i can have bagels for breakfast, curry for lunch, and ramen for dinner without even leaving the city limits. music and art and philosophy and technology that originated thousands of miles and years apart from eachother have come together and interwoven into something greater than the sum of its parts. its hard not fall into despair when thinking about the horrors but god. god the wonders.
