I just don't think people give Niall enough credit for how ambitious and cunning and ruthless HE is. (Complimentary! You GOTTA be all of those things to have any chance of thriving in the industry.)
When the group was a five piece, Niall was fourth ranked in solos, and then when they became four, he was STILL third behind Liam and Harry. Like Louis, he carved out a different place for himself by playing the guitar as much as he did in addition to singing. He was the ONLY one you saw playing an instrument in those days!
One could easily make the argument that HE was the one being underestimated and somewhat stifled creatively by being in a boy band. He's always been more in Ed Sheeran's lane when it comes to career trajectory. (Alexa, play "Don't")
Not to mention that being in the band permanently fucked up Niall's knees.
He was the first of the four who stayed to the end to release solo music.
Take all that and add it to the way the man is fucking TEFLON and he plays his cards VERY close to the chest IRT his private life (Like genuinely, we only know what he allows us to know!) and you have a prime case as to why he could have been the one to really push for the break-up in the end and take Louis by surprise.
