John Williams Musical Storyteller
I was 11 when JAWS premiered in 1975. I did not know who John Williams was or much about movies. two hours after seeing the movie I did understand the power of the score of a movie. If you are old enough to remember you will know what I mean when I say that just the thought of swimming in a lake or a river, let alone the ocean was terrifying after the movie came out. The fear of a creature the size of a school bus eating you will have that effect. Or was it something else? I could not understand it at the time but it was not the shark itself. Or even the fantastic job Steven Spielberg did putting together the wonderful film we see without the shark even working right. It was the sound, but more specifically the soundtrack. The main title set the tone of the whole film with its melodic ocean themes that hinted that there was something in the water, something for us to fear. Then we heard da....dum.....da....dum.....dadumdadumdadum..... then something bad happens. For at least a decade or more almost every horror movie that came out after JAWS was released used
variation of his same theme. Halloween, Friday the 13th and others took that primal fear created in the one bit of music. When latest horror movie arrived at the theater audiences became accustom that the musical Que meant the bad guy in a mask was coming. Whether he did or not the effect was the same. Shrieks, screams and yells filled the theater. Three years later in 1978, not 1977. I was in a church on the edge of the Grand Canyon. We sat in the old metal seats they had in rows. It was not very comfortable and I thought it was funny that I could see the wires which ran from the projector that was in the back of the room, like a school projector, to the speakers scattered around the room. I finally saw the movie that opened my eyes completely to the world of cinema. STAR WARS!! I was dumbfounded and thunderstruck all at once. By the time the Star Destroyer had finished flying over my head, It was like modern 3D, I felt like it was really cruising over my head. I was completely hooked, but not just by the struggle between the Republic and the Empire but by the music itself. It was safe to say that I knew who John Williams was after it ended. The power, the size and scope of the music in the Star Wars Saga. How the dialog and visuals were tied together in that journey with the music. Recreating the scenes in my head as I play the score on CD. John Williams is cinema. His soundtracks resonate beyond the movies themselves. The feelings and emotions we get watching those movies come out of his unforgettable work. From Jaws to Star Wars and Superman. From Schindler's to JFK. From Home Alone to Adventures of Tin Tin. The list goes on from genre to genre. So many classic film made better by a musical Storyteller. Cary Michael Paller Twitter: CinemaTalkcp Facebook: Facebook/CinemaTalkCP Email: [email protected]

BATMAN - The Telltale Series' Unveiled in First Look Ahead of Summer 2016 Premiere
Leading developer and publisher of digital entertainment, Telltale Games, with Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment and DC Entertainment, today unveiled the first look at BATMAN - The Telltale Series ahead of its worldwide debut this summer.
The episodic game series will premiere digitally on home consoles, PC/Mac, and mobile devices, and will be shown to guests attending the annual E3 Gaming Expo this coming week in Los Angeles. The series will also be available on game consoles as a special 'Season Pass Disc' which will be available at retailers across North America, Latin America, and Europe later this summer, granting access to the five episode season as it becomes available for download.
"We've been hard at work at Telltale creating an all-new iteration of the iconic Batman story that puts players in the suit of billionaire Bruce Wayne, just as much as it will put them behind the mask, deciding how to carefully navigate a complex drama, rich with action, crime, corruption, and villainy lurking around every corner of Gotham City," said Kevin Bruner, Co-Founder and CEO of Telltale Games. "The complex life and fractured psyche of Bruce Wayne has lent itself to becoming a bold evolution of the signature 'Telltale' role-playing experience, and we couldn't be more excited as we prepare to debut the series to players across the world this summer."

Movie Review - Enemy Mine. Out on Blu-Ray on 20th June
Enemy Mine (1985).
Hot on the heels of the global successes he had with his claustrophobic (anti)war movie Das Boot (in 1981) and the fantasy adventure: Die Unendliche Geschichte (internationally known as: The Neverending Story (in 1984), director Wolfgang Peterson turned to Science Fiction for his next project and delivered his first film produced in the English language: Enemy Mine, based on a short story by Barry B. Longyear.
The story, in short:
On the distant planet Fryine IV, at the height of the war between the Dracon and Terran Empires, two military pilots crash in the heat of battle. One of them. Space pilot Willis Davidge (played by Dennis Quaid) is Terran, the other one, Jeriba Shigan (played by Louis Gosset jr.) is Drac. Each of them is a repulsive alien to the other. Each is a professional warrior, filled with hatred for his blood enemy. Now, marooned on a hostile world, they have a choice. They can complete their missions in a mutual pact of violence and death. Or they can do the most painful thing any Human or Drac has ever done: reach out and begin the new age of understanding that is struggling to be born.
Peterson wasn’t the first choice, Terry Gilliam for instance, had turned down the offer (and chose to make Brazil instead), and his successor Richard Loncraine was fired by the studio, even though filming had already started. When Peterson accepted the job he decided not to use any of the footage already shot and relocated a great deal of the shoot from Iceland to the Bavaria Studios in Munich (even using some of the sets used/built for Das Boot and Neverending Story) with some of the outdoor scenes being filmed at Lanzarote.
The Blu-ray:
It had been a long time, since I had seen the film (it was never properly released in the Netherlands, so my memories were solely based on my repeated VHS viewing). This made the viewing of the Blu-ray extra special. The images are crystal clear, as if the film had been shot recently and the colorization is crisp as well. At the time of viewing, not all extras were available, but one of them that was available, was an extended version of a scene in the latter half of the film, that hadn’t been enhanced (and was even presented in the German dubbed version), making the comparison a lot easier.
Even though the film itself suffers from the 30 plus years that have passed since it’s original release, the special effects from ILM rather disappointed me, the battle in space really looked like a bad videogame in my opinion (but maybe that was because the image had been so clean, so I noticed all the details). The look of the Dracs however (who were designed by Chris Walas) are really out-of-this-world. Like I said, the image is very clear and when Shigan (played by a totally unrecognizable Louis Gosset jr.) talked, I could almost see every muscle in his face move very realistically.
The story itself is a bit weak in my opinion, some of the action sequences seems to appear straight out of thin air, without much of explanation and the finale I found very disappointing (considering the rest of the story). The music by Maurice Jarre (who’s scores for Lawrence of Arabia and Dr. Zhivago I adore) isn’t too great either. In scenes where I would expect (a lot of) music (that’s what listening to (too) much of the scores of John Williams does to you), I encountered mostly silence and when the music was occasionally heard, the themes weren’t very memorable I’m afraid.
All in all the film slightly disappointed me, but the crystal clear image and sound made up for that on most of the occasions (and repeated viewing does work in the film’s favor).
The film itself I would rate **1/2 (out of 5),
the special effects I would give *** (out of 5),
the make-up effects I would have to award with ***** (out of 5),
the sound is decent enough for **** (out of 5)
and the image brilliance I would rate ***** (out of 5),
so overall I would give this Blu-ray edition of Enemy Mine ****1/2 (out of 5).
Ronny.
Eureka Entertainment will release ENEMY MINE on Blu-ray for the first time in the UK on 20th June 2016

John Williams Returning To Score Indy V
Back in March we were delighted to here the news that the man in the hat will be coming back for his fifth installment. Yes Indiana Jones is returning to the big screen and last night at the AFI Life Achievement Award for John Williams it was also confirmed that the composer will be back to perform his magic once more. Now that is good news. Steven Spielberg dropped the news during his tribute to John Williams and Scott Mantz of Access Hollywood tweeted this news out through his Twitter feed
Breaking! At the @AmericanFilm Tribute, #StevenSpielberg confirmed that #JohnWilliams will score #IndianaJones 5! pic.twitter.com/2RKGsbeonj

You can check out our article on last nights awards along with a bonus post with photos from the event.
John Williams returning for another Indiana Jones movie makes me really excited, even more than for Star Wars The Force Awakens. Whether you liked Indiana Jones and Kingdom of the Crystal Skull or not, one thing you have to agree is the soundtrack was top quality. If you're not excited for Indy V at least there's another John Williams soundtrack on the way and that...that is no bad thing. To remind you (You probably don't need reminding) how good he is here's the desert chase scene from Raiders of the Lost Ark. Simply brilliant!

Steven Spielberg and George Lucas Pay Tribute to John Williams As AFI Honour The Master Composer
Composer John Williams was honoured by Hollywood Thursday for a glittering and stunning career spanning seven decades of classic film scores, including his most famous work on "Star Wars" and "Jaws." Steven Spielberg presented John Williams, 84 with the American Film Institute (AFI) Award -- billed "America's highest honour for a career in film" -- at a gala event at the Dolby Theatre. Spielberg said: “Without John Williams, bikes don’t really fly. Nor do brooms in Quidditch matches. Nor do men in red capes. There is no Force. Dinosaurs do not walk the earth. We do not wonder. We do not weep. We do not believe,” The other of the Bearded Trio was also present, George Lucas: “You see, Star Wars was meant to be a simple hero’s journey; a fantasy for young people,” he said. “And then John wrote the music and he raised it to a level of popular art that would stand the test of time...What I’m trying to say is you made my life so easy. I had so many ideas for other movies, but I never got to them because you ensured that Star Wars would last forever and then you did it again with Raiders of the Lost Ark. A long, long time ago, Steven [Spielberg] and I sat on the beach to talk about the story of Indy and, instantly, we both said at the same time, ‘John has to write the music.’ Steve said, ‘Right. that’s the most important part. Let’s go have lunch and we can write the story later.’” Another director present was Richard Donner who took the opportunity to tell John Williams “The first cue he did was the titles and when the title ‘Superman’ came across the screen, his music said Superman. I couldn’t believe it. I went home. I took the rest of the week off.”
Tom Hanks was also at the awards and had this to say about the composer as he hummed some of his most memorable themes including Jaws and Close Encounters of the Third Kind: “How much of John Williams’ music needs only to be heard? The visuals are nice, but not always necessary because John’s music has a singular authenticity that stirs our synapses. How much do you need? A few bars? Not even. A few notes...And just like that we remember where we were and what we were doing when we heard that music for the very first time.”
Many stars of Hollywood congratulated Williams and showed their love for his music including Daisey Ridley, Mark Hamill and Harrison Ford who hummed the Indiana Jones theme as he walked on stage. He said: “That damn music follows me everywhere. They play it every time I walk on a stage, every time I walk off a stage…it was playing in the operating room when I went in for my colonoscopy.” The star of Star Wars and of course Indiana Jones also shared "To play a character graced by John’s music is, of course, a real gift.” He went on to cite “Marion’s Theme,” which plays as Indiana Jones fears his lover has been killed. “It invites the audience’s emotional involvement. It encourages us to feel. It’s an example of entertainment elevated to art. John, you’re a genius.” John Williams was his humble self and said during his acceptance speech: “Once I get over being stunned, I will treasure this night always. Tomorrow morning, when I’m back at work, I will try to deserve all of this." The award was long overdue for the composer that has been the soundtrack to many people's lives over the decades. Congratulations John and thank you. Rob Wainfur @thebeardedtrio

Is the news that John Williams is working on READY PLAYER ONE official?
A recent interview with John Williams for Variety has the composer talking about his AFI award nomination, his wonderful career and even Star Wars Episode VIII. There are plenty of quotes from Williams but no where does he actually confirm he is working on Steven Spielberg's Ready Player One. Now it's very likely he is, but the Internet is reporting that he confirmed it in this interview. Have I missed something here? The one line in the interview says: He plans to begin work on Spielberg’s next film, “Ready Player One,” There is no source to back up this claim. Is this confirmation or should we wait for a more official source before calling it official? What do you think?

Paul Schrader talks about his original draft for Steven Spielberg's CE3K
Paul Schrader wrote an early draft of Steven Spielberg's Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977), but Spielberg disliked the screen-play, calling it "terribly guilt-ridden", and opted for a lighter script. New Images Released For Pixar's Short, PIPER
PIPER Directed by Alan Barillaro Produced by Marc Sondheimer Rating: G TRT: 6:00 Directed by Alan Barillaro and produced by Marc Sondheimer, “Piper,” the new short from Pixar Animation Studios, tells the story of a hungry sandpiper hatchling who ventures from her nest for the first time to dig for food by the shoreline. The only problem is, the food is buried beneath the sand where scary waves roll up onto the shore. “Piper” will debut in theaters worldwide with “Finding Dory” in 2016. ALAN BARILLARO (Director) joined Pixar Animation Studios in January 1997. Barillaro has worked on almost every Pixar film as an animator, including “A Bug’s Life,” “Toy Story 2,” “Monsters, Inc.,” and the Academy Award®-winning features “Finding Nemo,” “The Incredibles,” “WALL•E” and “Brave.” On those last three features, Barillaro was given the role of supervising animator and was therefore responsible for overseeing the team of animators who worked to bring the characters in the films to life. Following his work on “Brave,” Barillaro went to work with Pixar’s software development team to help craft an animation tool that would help provide additional creative flexibility to the studio’s filmmaking process. As a proof of concept, Barillaro created a short animation test about a small bird – a sandpiper – on a beach. This animation test soon grew into a full-fledged short film, “Piper,” directed by Barillaro and debuting theatrically with “Finding Dory” in 2016. Growing up in Niagara Falls, Canada, Barillaro’s interest in animation began at a young age. He worked his way up through the ranks at various commercial houses during high school and continued his studies at Sheridan College for Animation. Barillaro resides in Oakland, Calif., with his family.
MARC SONDHEIMER (Producer) joined Pixar Animation Studios in October of 2001, where he started out as a production finance lead for “The Incredibles.” Since then, Sondheimer has continued to operate a variety of positions in production. He was the finance lead for the short films “Lifted” and “One Man Band,” as well as for the Academy Award®-winning feature film “WALL•E,” and on the studio’s upcoming feature “Finding Dory.” In addition, Sondheimer has been the sets department manager on “WALL•E,” technical department manager for various CarsToons, and associate producer and production manager on the Academy Award®-nominated short “Day & Night.” Most recently, he served a leadership role on “The Good Dinosaur” and was the producer of the promotional animation department on “The Good Dinosaur” and “Finding Dory.” Prior to Pixar, Sondheimer worked in a variety of different fields, including as a business strategy consultant and as the business development director for Quokka Sports, a digital sports media company. He was also a successful entrepreneur while operating his own import business. Sondheimer received a Bachelor of Arts degree from University of California, Berkeley, and went on to earn a Master of Business Administration and Master of International Management degree from Thunderbird School of Global Management. Born and raised in Marin County, Calif., Sondheimer resides in San Francisco.

INDEPENDENCE DAY ALIEN BEAMS INTO LONDON STATION
A lifelike alien beamed into Euston Train Station today, amazing bleary-eyed rail passengers and giving their phones a resurgence in the process. Encased in a giant pulsing laboratory cylinder, instantly recognisable to fans of Independence Day, the living, breathing specimen brings to life one of the aliens from the hotly anticipated sequel INDEPENDENCE DAY: RESURGENCE, in cinemas 23rd June. In partnership between Twentieth Century Fox Film Corporation and Virgin Trains, which is launching its brand new, complimentary App based entertainment service BEAM, the PHONE RESURGENCE experiential gives visitors of Euston the chance to charge their phones, apparently channelling energy from the alien specimen, whilst they view exclusive content from the new film and find out How to BEAM. The installation, which shall remain live for a week in the main concourse, was unveiled by Alex Zane and a professor apparently from Virgin Trains' secret extraterrestrial division. It suggests that in the 20 years since the events of Independence Day in 1996, Virgin Trains have exploited the advanced alien technology to improve their service. Virgin Trains’ entertainment service BEAM is jam-packed with hundreds of hours of blockbuster movies, including the original Independence Day, as well as TV, giant reads and fun games, available on-board through the BEAM app. INDEPENDENCE DAY: RESURGENCE IS RELEASED BY TWENTIETH CENTURY FOX ON 23rd June 2016

Dinosaur Zoo - A Classic Jurassic Park Fan Made Movie. (Yes, there is a T-Rex!)
I absolutely love a good fan movie and 'Dinosaur Zoo' is a classic. Apparently the budget was zero dollars which, lets be honest make fan movies like this ooze with charm, improvisation and a side of creativity that sometimes is lacking in their big budget counterparts. 'Dinosaur Zoo' came out in 2013 and stars Mike Hicks, Jennifer Smallwood and Mario Xavier and you can tell they had so much fun making this and are obvious Jurassic Park fans. It really is worth a watch. 'The $0 dollar remake of Steven Spielberg's "Jurassic Park". When two scientists are invited to tour a new dinosaur zoo, things don't work out the way they are supposed to.'
If you loved that then you are in luck as there are sequels:

The BFG - Mark Rylance Featurette
The talents of three of the world’s greatest storytellers – Roald Dahl, Walt Disney and Steven Spielberg – finally unite to bring Dahl’s beloved classic “The BFG” to life. Directed by Spielberg, Disney’s “The BFG” tells the imaginative story of a young girl and the Giant who introduces her to the wonders and perils of Giant Country. The BFG (Mark Rylance), while a giant himself, is a Big Friendly Giant and nothing like the other inhabitants of Giant Country. Standing 24-feet tall with enormous ears and a keen sense of smell, he is endearingly dim-witted and keeps to himself for the most part. Giants like Bloodbottler (Bill Hader) and Fleshlumpeater (Jemaine Clement) on the other hand, are twice as big and at least twice as scary and have been known to eat humans, while the BFG prefers Snozzcumber and Frobscottle. Upon her arrival in Giant Country, Sophie, a precocious 10-year-old girl from London, is initially frightened of the mysterious giant who has brought her to his cave, but soon comes to realize that the BFG is actually quite gentle and charming, and, having never met a giant before, has many questions. The BFG brings Sophie to Dream Country where he collects dreams and sends them to children, teaching her all about the magic and mystery of dreams. Having both been on their own in the world up until now, their affection for one another quickly grows, but Sophie’s presence in Giant Country has attracted the unwanted attention of the other giants, who have become increasingly more bothersome. Sophie and the BFG soon depart for London to see the Queen (Penelope Wilton) and warn her of the precarious giant situation, but they must first convince the Queen and her maid, Mary (Rebecca Hall), that giants do indeed exist. Together, they come up with a plan to get rid of the giants once and for all.
