Sierra Nevada - Torpedo Extra IPA

Pouring a slightly hazy orange/red/amber colour this double IPA brewed with American hops in California has a very hoppy, complex aroma. Pine, orange-citrus and herbs layered through each other in the nose. Heavily bodied, the citrus and resinous characters of the hops dominate on the tongue. A long, lingering finish follows; initially all fresh citrus hops giving way to a strong kick-your-teeth bitterness. Delicious.

Renaissance Brewing Co. - Clipper

This low abv IPA pours an orange-ish gold with little to no head. Slightly pine resinous on the nose along with apple and orange-citrus. In the mouth the pine hop dominates with a bitter citrus finish. Not as full bodied as promised on the label although that is to be expected of such a lower strength beer.

Ecliptic Brewing / Wicked Weed Brewing / Stone Brewing Co. - Points Unknown IPA

Pouring a tangerine amber this USA collaboration beer between brewers in San Diego, Portland and North Carolina produces a substantial but fast fading head. The nose is oak and a slight Belgian-style funkiness overlain with a layer of orange-type citrus bitterness that is common in Australian hops. This beer is a blend of a double IPA (3/4) and a Belgian style Tripel aged in red wine barrels that themselves had most recently aged tequila (1/4). The orange bitterness, along with some peach and banana elements comes through first fading to a smooth Belgian Tripel finish that is oak-y and delicious. This is an exceptional, complex beer that keeps me coming back, each sip subtlety different.

Just a quick review for this Californian beer. This amber-gold sour has aromas of lemon and lavender which follow through onto the tongue with a nice sourness that gives way to spice. Delicious.

Anchor Brewing Co. - Liberty Ale

This California beer pours a bright and vibrant golden colour. The aromas are reminiscent of a golden ale although with the addition of grapefruit citrus. Unfortunately in the mouth very little of this follows through; the hop flavours are almost hiding and are more resin character than citrus. Tastes a little un-balanced; not unpleasant but not great either.

Founder's Brewing Co. - Centennial IPA (Can)

This american IPA pours a dark orange colour with a slightly soapy looking head. The aromas are packed full of citrus, so much so that you can smell the bitterness! There are also undertones of tropical fruit, possibly kiwi-fruit. The flavour is book-ended with strong bitterness and the citrus and kiwi come through in between. Very dry and simply delicious.

Lervig Aktiebryggeri - Johnny Low Light (Can)

This Norwegian session IPA pours golden with a substantial and persistent head. Very fresh aroma; cut grass and subtle lemon or orange citrus. On the tongue the lemon citrus comes through lightly with an overall impression of freshness. Not very complex but, for the weight, still very tasty.

Stone Brewing Co. - Thunderstruck IPA (19th Anniversary)

This orange-gold IPA seems to be all about the oranges. The nose is full of orange-type-citrus (orange, satsuma, tangerine, clementine) hops with slightly spicy undertones. The flavour is closer to grapefruit than orange; very bitter but somehow smooth. I would have to describe this as dangerously easy drinking as you can't taste the almost 9% alcohol. Overall this is a wonderful and delicious IPA showcase of Australian hops. I wish I had some more to see how it ages (or more likely open up with friends before it has a chance to age!).

Harvey's (Harvey & Son) - Imperial Extra Double Stout (Champion Bottled Beers Of Britain 2015 - CHAMPION!)

This heavy, almost syrupy pouring imperial Russian stout is a deep, opaque black. The nose is extremely complex with aniseed and herbs mingling and changing from moment to moment. Spicy with molasses flavours there are also sour yeast layers. You can definitely taste the alcohol of this 9% brew but its not off putting, if anything it adds to the complex and challenging syrup like character. I would have to describe this beer as luxurious.

I can't (unusually for me) come to an honest score or assessment. I really truly believe that this is a beer which changes character from sip to sip and bottle to bottle due to its astounding complexity.

Mordue Brewery - IPA (Champion Bottled Beers Of Britain 2015 - RUNNER UP!)

This IPA pours almost straw-pale. Intense grapefruit and orange hop aromas are followed through into the flavour along with an intense, deep bitternss that lingers on the tongue. Excellent hoppy IPA, fresh flavour, nice long finish. No more needs to be said.

8 Sail Brewery - Damson Porter (Champion Bottled Beers Of Britain 2015 Finalist)

This specialist porter pours a purple-tinted black. Dry coffee dominates on the nose, there is a hint of dried fruit aromas though, nodding to the inclusion of damsons. On the tongue the damson fruit notes are an undercurrent to a smooth coffee dominated stout, they don't dominate. I can see why many people would like this beer and it is undoubtedly excellently made but it is not quite to my taste.

Otley Brewing Co. - 09 Blonde (Champion Bottled Beers of Britain 2015 Finalist)

This golden, richly coloured blonde ale has a really strong aroma of banana, along with undertones of spices. The banana follows through into the mouth, followed by the spice, and then a slightly bitter finish. An interesting beer but I am not entirely convinced by it.

Castle Rock Brewery - Elsie Mo (Champion Bottled Beers of Britain 2015 Finalist)

This ale really does pour a bright glorious gold, just like the label promises, although a lacklustre head lets down the aesthetics a little. The aroma is classic golden ale; balanced hops and light malts leading to a slightly fruity, honey-like scent. The Marris Otter malt are forward in the flavour making this beer full bodied and finishing with an excellent lingering bitterness.

The Beowulf Brewing Company - Dark Raven (Champion Bottled Beers of Britain 2015 Finalist)

This dark mild pours a deep, dark nut brown with a substantial, smooth head. Burnt grain, hints of vanilla and a general smoothness all mingle on the nose. On the palette the flavour follows traditional dark mild patterns with heavy malt and little to no hop character. Full of roasted and toasted flavours the finish is exceptionally smooth. Very tasty.

Fuller's - 1845 (Champion Bottled Beers of Britain 2015 Finalist)

This 100 day aged ale is deep ruby in colour with a strong and persistent head. The aroma is strong with dried fruit, almost fruit-cake, perhaps one soaked in port or sherry. On the tongue smooth and deep malt character dominates along with that fortified wine smoothness and flavour. Utterly wonderful.

Coniston Brewing Co. - Bluebird Bitter (Champion Bottled Beers of Britain 2015 Finalist)

This bitter pours copper with no significant head. The nose is very traditional bitter in profile, light malts slightly bready dominate with only a hint of the challenger hops. Notheing jumps out about the flavour. A solid if a little to ordinary bitter.

Otley Brewing Co. - 10 Oxymoron (Champion Bottled Beers of Britain 2015 Finalist)

This 'Black IPA' pours a dark-chocolate brown, almost black. Grapefruit and more general citrus hops dominate on the nose with some darker, roasted notes from the malt coming through. There is a well balanced citrus hop bitterness and coffee malt notes in the mouth. The finish is lingering and satisfyingly bitter. Would have scored higher with a stronger hop profile but delicious nonetheless.
