My dad cussed out my mom today. It doesn’t really matter why.

My mom has been in Northwest Indiana all week because her childhood home was severely impacted by the storms. The entire state is under a state of emergency.

And her husband, my dad, who I’ve rarely seen yell at her, and certainly never heard him call her out her name thought that was appropriate.

Disappointed ain’t even the word. 

We are quite literally dealing with one of the worst weeks of our lives and that’s how our patriarch decides to show up.

And when my sister went to calmly explain to him that she found his behavior inappropriate, he cussed her out too. She called me crying. Triggered. The only man whose spoken to her in that way, was an ex she cut off immediately.

I hate that she experienced that sort of violence and verbal assault from our own father.

I’m angry my mom normalized his behavior.

You can get your point across without raising your voice and name calling.

I’m a writer. It is what I do for a living and huge part of my identity (outside of work).

But I simply cannot put into words how devastating this week has been for my family. No one really understands. Every little inconvenience feels like betrayal, and I literally just want to be left alone.
