Antonia Dreykov Defense (part 1 if I forget something)
I will always love and like MCU Taskmaster more than her comic counterpart.
first thing to specify, I donāt hate Anthony (heās a weird cool guy and the cocky mercenary is a good personality for the character) and I would have liked to see him in the black widow movie.
does that mean that Iām not happy with what I got? Hell no, Antoniaās character is amazing in my opinion even if she doesnt objectively come close to the comic counterpart. And I know how it must have sucked for all of the taskmasters fans who wanted an accurate representation of the character.
if I had to give an example of how I felt, Iād say like I felt with the peacemaker season 2 finale. Did I want it to go differently? Yes. Did I still enjoy it ? Also yes.
but that doesnāt mean that Antonia is less of a character because of it. Yelena was nothing like in the comics and people still love her, the same for Alexei or ghost.
so, does that mean that you can take any character, make them completely different and itās not a problem? Hell no yet again.
take snyderās superman or Batman. Theyāre much more important than taksmaster as characters, but they were still changed a lot in his universe, which ruined them because they didnāt held the same characteristics of the comic versions.
I believe the factors are two:
1- You can re-invent a character if theyāre not famous (Ghost) or their story sucks or is too complicated (The Boys show as an example got completely changed from what it was from the comics and itās for the better)
2-Good writing. People liked original movie versions of characters much more after seeing them for more time (Ghost got more popular in thunderbolts after people didnāt much care for her in ant man and the wasp) (There has surely been a rise of John Walker fans after thunderbolts (heās not movie original but itās to illustrate my point)). On the contrary, Snyder Superman sucked because his writing of him was awful.
Antonia in black widow was good, because you introduced her and you gave her a story, but if you kill her right at the start of thunderbolts, then sheās going to suck as a character because she didnāt grow or have any personality people could attach themselves to. I could bet you that if she lived like in the concept art and original scripts, she would have had a much larger fanbase than now (itās still large because many people are outraged by her conclusion like me).
an example I could make of this is war machine. He got ruined after secret invasion and the fact that his series got cancelled made the last impact of his character worse.
In conclusion, Antonia would definitely have been more liked if the director didnāt cut her from the movie to āRaise the stakesā (dumbass reason in my opinion, the movie would have been the same if not better with her. This leaves the character uncompleted and blank).
Feel free to comment your opinion or even to disagree because I know that comic taskmaster is awesome, but Antonia will always be my taskmaster.
