how about this: when i was 9 and my stepdad beat me until i passed out and i told my friends at school, my teacher over heard and i was interviewed by cps. they also went to my house when i was at school. when i got home, my step father was waiting on the couch, and told me who visited him that day. he told me if i ever snitched again he would beat me to within an inch of my life.

how about this: my mother locked me out of the house when i was 14 and when i cried so loud the neighbors called the cops, the cop told me i should have been respectful of my mother who was trying to sleep.

how about this. the demon you know is less scary than the demon you don’t.

children in abused households are raised to fear the idea of being taken away. children in abusive households see that help makes things worse.

Also, a lot of abused children don’t realize that they’re being abused or the extent of the abuse. It’s their normal. Their minds are formed by their experiences and if all they’ve known is one existence it can be difficult to recognize that it’s wrong

It can be difficult to realize that “better” even exists. This is part of why fiction can be life-saving. If you can read stories about happy families, loving families, sometimes you can hang on long enough to find or build a loving family for yourself.

Never let it be said I only complain about Rhaenyra's character assassination because even the writers rooms' favourite little puppy is getting mischaracterised and misused.

The idea that Alicent, a child-bride, needs to sacrifice her children in order to attain moral rectitude is so disgusting.

The idea that a woman should subordinate the needs of her own family for a potential romantic partner is soooo disgusting and anti-feminist.

It's why Aemma is forced to undergo traumatic pregnancy after traumatic pregnancy for Viserys' legacy despite the fact that she has a child who relies on her. It's why Viserys expects her to ignore the fact that her son just lost an eye so he can have a happy family. It's why he expects her to not champion her blood's inheritance.

IRL, the idea of ferberising babies and letting them cry it out and being less affectionate is so women can be available to their husbands.

We could have had a story about a woman who is sold to a king, who decides that none of her children are good enough to inherit and expects her to colour inside the lines and shut up about it, who strikes out and decides "No, I will not let my sacrifices or my legacy be ignored for your comfort."

ALSO could have examined potential Valyrian/Andal tensions since Viserys is choosing his more Valyrian child over what the majority Andal Realm sees as the true heir.

By the way, the fact that 3/4 of her total children and 2/3 she's choosing to sacrifice are disabled in some way is not lost on me at all.

Something I appreciate about the Rhaenyra and Alicent fandom is that, regardless of whether people ship Rhaenicent romantically or see them as tragic friends, there’s a widespread tendency to engage with them as people first. Fans meme them, analyze their flaws, poke fun at their disastrous communication, celebrate their strengths, and argue over their choices with the same energy traditionally reserved for popular male characters. That kind of investment feels significant. For once, two female characters are driving the conversation. Of course some people are bitching about who is prettier or more moral, but most people are just enjoying their complexity.

Don’t get me wrong. Fandom is still misogynistic when it comes to women, but it is nice to see this. Maybe there is some hope after all.
