I will not be shipping Claudia with anyone besides Madeleine's written by @musecraft and @threnodique. This is due to the complex nature of Claudia's immortality. It takes a lot of trust and open communication to properly write any sort of romantic dynamic with Claudia.

the apartment on divisadero sags all around him like something waterlogged and left too long at the bottom of the sea. colors dripping all around him, reality melting into saturated paints. velvet curtains drawn against the weak gray suggestion of dawn. the air rank with blood and sweet chemical smoke and the hot iron stink of opened flesh. something floats, a melody, a record skipping somewhere in the other room, needle dragging at the end of a song, over and over, like a nervous tick.

he’s been lying heavy on the bed for god knows how long, one arm flung over his eyes like it’ll help. blood slicks his chest in dark lacquer beneath the dim lamp. dries sticky beneath his nails, between his fingers. most of it belongs to the blond. pretty little thing with pupils blown wide as eclipses, laughing around a mouthful of smoke before louis tears him open at the throat. before the frenzy takes hold entire. before the head comes away in his hands with a wet crack like snapping the neck from a roasted bird.

head’s still here in the room somewhere, he thinks. can’t be too sure, not over the narcotic flood in his veins. drugs move strangely through dead flesh. not truly a high. more like a haunting. thoughts loosen from one another. time opening and shutting like a fist. memories rising in pieces. voices with no bodies attached to them. and then her. daddy lou, daddy lou, daddy lou–

his dead heart twists in his chest. he doesn’t open his eyes. if he does, she might vanish.

her voice drifts through the room with the weightless clarity of a music box melody. new orleans dusks spilling purple-orange through lace curtains. chatter in the fig trees. wings scattering from rooftops. paul standing barefoot in the yard with seed in his palm and sunlight in his eyes. paul, with his head full of feathers and prophecy. 

the room pulses slowly. the ceiling exhales outward. shadows gather in the corners like crouched animals. somewhere water runs through the walls. wings beat frantically against wire. his fucking soul, a cage covered with velvet cloth. how many more prisons can he build for himself? church. home. storyville. lestat. armand. this apartment with its rotting grandeur and endless string of lost boys. louis forever stepping willingly inside and locking the door himself, then raging at the sound of the key turning. the vanity of suffering. a nightingale, perhaps. my beautiful melancholy bird.

louis presses the heels of his palms harder against his eyes until colors burst there, violent and blooming, like it’ll somehow choke out the sound of lestat’s voice. focuses instead on the sound of her chirping, pitying him, little bird, little waif, heart of his heart, baby lu, still alive after all these years, beating bloody little wings against his ribs.

he’ll fly to her soon enough. just give him one more night, one more boy, one more pointless kill, to gather the courage to open the cage door.
