About me

Hi there, and welcome to my art blog. I'm River (she/they), a 30-something years old portuguese digital artist and photographer. I'm chronically disabled, non-binary, AuDHD, LGBTQ+ and love all things geek, fantasy, sci-fi, dark, 80s and 90s.

I used to draw a lot when I was younger but it was considered just a "hobby" and was mostly set aside as I grew up. Fast forward to 2023, when I was diagnosed with myasthenia gravis and a thymoma, and was very ill for most of the year. Being pretty much bedridden and housebound, I started drawing again to express myself, my frustrations and emotions, mostly through humour, and to connect with others within the community. That's how I rediscovered my love for creating art.

It's been a long and difficult process but I'm now doing better. I continue to use my art as a means of self expression for my illness and interests but I'm also hoping it might help me financially a bit, since I'm no longer able to work and things are a bit tight right now.

I'm a huge fan of wearing odd socks and I'm always frustrated that you need to buy two pairs of socks to get one pair of odd socks 😅

I’m so tired of the “why do people hate aspecs, they aren’t doing anything?” argument. I know that it is an attempt to support us, but it fails so spectacularly to understand aromanticism, asexuality, and any other aspec identity that it’s actively frustrating.

We are doing something. We’re rejecting allonormative ideals and that’s a massive thing to do. We’re actively fighting not just to help other aspecs, but to help everyone, because amatonormativity (and allonormativity as a whole) hurt everyone. Single people who want to find a partner but can’t also deserve to be able to exist.

There are so many issues with the expectation of marriage, including:

A single income isn't enough to get by anymore

Having a spouse is almost necessary under the current medical system

Society shames and pressures people who are single to get into relationships constantly

Rejecting allonormativity means fighting against these things that hurt everyone.

So, no, aces and aros and other aspecs aren't "doing nothing." We're doing quite a lot.

I've started a series of sunflower pride flags, for those of us who live with an invisible disability and who are lgbtq+.

So far I only have these four (pride, lesbian, bi and pan), but more are coming! They're all available in my shop on all sorts of merch. From tote bags, stickers and pins, to clothes, home decoration and bags.

i’ve said it before but i wish vaginas didn’t cost money

you literally can not have a vagina without paying for it. vaginoplasty for some, period products for others, if you want to stop buying period products that’s gonna be expensive medicine or an expensive procedure, recovery from surgery requires time off work and vaginoplasty specifically requires money spent on dilators. our bodies shouldnt cost us this much on baseline. having a vagina shouldnt have such a hefty tax on it. it makes me feel like i’m in a fictional dystopia written for middle school classrooms when i think about it.
