Bilbao and The new MINI Paceman.
The lovely people of MINI invited Clutch to Bilbao to drive the latest addition to the Mini squad, the MINI Paceman. Driving the smooth, winding roads surrounding the Northern Spanish City in this car was fun. Good tapas and a visit to the Bilbao Guggenheim made it a really good trip.
A quick visit in March meant I didn't get a sense of the Bilbao nightlife, but the Guggenheim and beautiful coast roads are enough reason to go. Driving through some of the small coastal towns, we saw surfers making the most of the deserted breaks on clean, out of season beaches.
Available in petrol/diesel, Sport and also 4-wheel drive. Adaptions to this MINI's body imply a meaner, faster car than previous models. The descending roof and larger bum make a tougher, more powerful image. A sports suspension will bring it lower to the ground and 4-wheel drive could open up opportunities for trips to more remote or snowy locations. More than two people in this car on a trip would start to be an issue. Depending on the length of trip and attitude of the back passenger/s. Just two seats in the back, in-between which is room for accessories including cup holders. We like cup-holders. There is an unnecessarily large (and ugly) round speedometer which frames an awkwardly rectangular media screen. The controls of which are located down by the handbrake. Rear sensor indicator is helpful. The circular, bubbly details run across the dashboard and on to the door handles. A particular taste, but a consistent and defining detail of the MINI range.
An enjoyable drive, which felt tough enough to tackle more than I had a chance to test it on, and small enough to dash around narrow european winding streets. A good trip, made particularly good when I found Cy Twombly's, Nine Discourses on Commodus, 1963 tucked away on the top floor of The Guggenheim.

Early electronic cars at the First Symposium on Low Pollution Power Systems Development in 1973. The Symposium was held on October 14th - 19th at the Mariott Motor Inn in Ann Arbor, Michigan and was sponsored by the U.S Environmental Protection Agency.

These images were made available online by The U.S. National Archives. They uploaded the images along with many more commissioned by The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for the Documerica project running between 1971 - 1977. The EPA commissioned the work to highlight environmental issues in 1970's America.

Announced in the run-up to the 2013 Geneva Motor Show, 58 journalists from 22 countries voted the VW Golf Mark 7 'Car of the Year 2013'. Since the award began in 1964, Volkswagen have taken the top prize with the Golf before in 1992 and in 2010 with the Polo.
Still feeling nostalgic for the older models, here are some images from it's history.
