Negative concept; birds are dirty
this is a really common misconception about birds! while it is POSSIBLE for birds to be dirty, of course, they aren’t dirtier than other animals, and they have a relatively low chance of being a vector for diseases that can be transmitted to humans.
most birds bathe often.
some species prefer dust bathing - something that people find dirty. however, dustbathing penetrates down to the bird’s skin and suffocates any notes or parasites, keeping them clean.
some birds even place antimicrobial herbs in their nests!
lots of birds secrete dust from feathers called powder down feathers; some culprits are pigeons, cockatiels, and budgies. this dust may seem gross, but it keeps feathers clean, waterproof, and wards off pests.
birds also have a gland called the uropygial gland (or preen gland). this gland secretes oil that is spread over the feathers via the bird’s beak. in many species, this oil has antibacterial properties and keeps feathers clean.

I legitimately do not understand why a vegan who’s dedicated to pursuing a 100% vegan lifestyle, to the point where they want their pets on a vegan diet as well, do not. just. keep. naturally vegan pets.
Rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, gerbils, tortoises, iguanas, a fucking horse, for fucks sake!
Like. My god, you have so many options for pets that literally CAN’T eat meat! Why would you insist on keeping a predator, if you can’t stomach the idea that they’re goddamn predators??
Do you have any idea how goddamn loving a hamster can be? Would you like to know what it feels like when a bunny asks you for cuddles?
Vegan pets are a thing. Animals that literally only eat plant matter are a thing.
You don’t have to torture dogs and cats to live a purely vegan lifestyle. Go buy a fucking guinea pig.
I know there’s a lot of tension after Tumblr’s new policy annouced for December 17th, but reblog this if you aren’t leaving Tumblr so that other blogs can know they aren’t going to be completely alone!
