Exactly 1 Year Later.
But can we discuss how it’s literally been one year to the day since Lucas’ father left him and his mother?
The beauty with SKAM is how you go on these journeys with all these characters in real time, and you experience first hand all their highs and lows, and the immense growth with every passing second, minute, hour, day, week, month, year... And it was this exact week in March last year (in between Season 1′s Episode 7 and 8) that we learn Lucas’ father has left him, his mother, and her battle with mental illness.
Emma arrives to Lucas house to discover Yann, who fills her in on everything that just went down.
Now I don’t know if David, Niels and co. planned this, or if it’s purely coincidence, or even... fate, but Lucas proves to himself that he is not his father. He chooses to STAY with Eliott. He demonstrates how his mental illness will not define them, it’s an aspect of Eliott, but not ALL of Eliott (much like his own mother).
We witness him and his mother there tonight, exactly one year later, after everything they’ve been through, together. She is the one who teaches him that people with mental illness can be loved. Two of the most important people in his life both suffer from it, and we see him being there for them both, coming into his own, as an adult, unlike his own father.
This is the same boy who was abandoned and left behind exactly a year ago, battling his inner self, isolated, alone, with every aspect of his life falling apart. But here he stands today, proud, and truly himself. Taking it a step at a time, minute by minute, with both his mom and Eliott.
That’s some parallel universe, red string of fate, destiny shit right there friends. To be able to have experienced Lucas’ journey of coming into his own has truly been a privilege (much like all the iterations of Isak’s story). I’m so proud. You’ve done good Lulu. And thank you SKAM for always being such a ride.
I love how David and Niels created this brand new scene with the 3 leads. Eva faded into the background in the OG as the series went on, so I think it’s great that they’re actively keeping Emma as an active player in the overall story of the series, and we can check in and see how she’s doing on her journey, even with her season now completed. How great would’ve it been to have Eva, Noora and Isak, 3 seasons in, come together to support one another in one scene, and being able to see first hand the change and growth each experienced after what they all individually go through in their respective seasons. Skam France has really succeeded in creating an ensemble, which bodes well to set up if/when they do more seasons in the future. I hope to see this trend continue with Imane up next. It’s like #TheAvengers: SKAM.
