Nikola Tesla’s Two Designs for Geothermal Energy

Nikola Tesla recognized early in his life that humankind was quickly consuming the earth’s supply of forests, coal, gas and oil which we use for heat, light and motive power in our everyday lives. He realized that these methods were barbarous and wasteful, because eventually all the forests would disappear, and the coal, gas and oil fields would be exhausted. This was not just his own opinion, but a fact based off the geological investigations of his time which showed our fuel stores to be limited. He believed it was in the best interest of future generations that humans should find better means of providing energy to the global population.

On his 75th birthday, Tesla gathered members of the press together and proposed two new designs for geothermal electric power; one involved utilizing the different temperatures of the upper and lower levels of the oceans, and the second was based on the concept of using the heat from below the earth’s surface. The two ideas were not new theories by any means, but mere proposals made by Tesla to improve upon previous research that to date had not been economically viable to implement. With Tesla’s new designs, he assured that steam could be a financially feasible option to provide the world with clean and inexpensive electrical and mechanical energy sources.

It is well known that at certain depths of the oceans the water gets colder, and the reverse effect happens on land where the temperatures get warmer. Tesla’s plan was to utilize these effects by using vacuums and vacuum pumps to generate steam power. The significance of the vacuum is simple. When water boils it evaporates and creates steam. Science tells us that at sea level water boils at 212 degrees Fahrenheit. It also tells us that water boils faster at lower atmospheric pressures. For example, the higher in elevation water gets from sea level the boiling point becomes lower than 212 °F. Therefore, in a vacuum where there is little to no atmospheric pressure, water can be made to boil at the lowest temperatures. This similar behavior is shown in a device called a cryophorus, invented by William Wollaston. A cryophorus contains two vacuum bulbs interconnected by a tube and both partially filled with liquid water. The liquid in one bulb evaporates and is condensed in the other. If the dry bulb is rapidly cooled, say put in ice, the water condensed in the other bulb freezes and gives off steam.

The —cryophorus— is well-known as a scientific toy, exemplifying also the principle of refrigerating machinery.

Tesla’s oceanic and terrestrial plan was similar to this scheme except on a much larger scale. His adaption was to make use of the steam by inserting a turbine in between the two bulbs and connecting it to a generator turning the steam into useful energy. The steam from the turbine could also be cycled back and reused.

In the oceanic design, Tesla planned to dig a pipe down to the great depths of the ocean to collect cold water, and have another pipe close to surface level. His vacuum pump would draw water from both levels of the ocean—one towards his condenser and the other to his boiler. The boiler would boil water at surface temperature (58 degrees Fahrenheit), and the steam generated would be directed up an insulated pipe towards the turbine—spinning it into rotation. The steam exhausted by the turbine is then passed to the condenser where it meets with the cold water, and just like with the cryophorus, the water is condensed and the cycle repeats.

The oceanic scheme draws power from the depths of the ocean, utilizing the warmth of one layer, brought into contact with the cold of another, to operate great power plants. 

The terrestrial system acts in opposite manner. A deep tunnel would be dug in the earth and an insulated pipe, connected to the turbine at surface level, would be inserted. The steam from the depths would be lifted up towards the turbine. From the turbine the steam is discharged into a condenser. The condensed water flows by gravity through another insulated pipe reaching to a depth at which the temperature of the ground exceeds that of the condensate. The picture below explains the process.

"My advice:

For a moment, take humans out of the picture. Let’s say humans never existed. Because this isn’t Christianity- this wasn’t all created for us because we’re some tragically bipolar deity’s children.

So no humans. And Existence is this big… swirling ocean… of different forces. And, per animism, they have some degree of sentience. Some are working with each other, some are in a kind of hermetic polarized pair (hot and cold), some are in contention (like the Greek gods vying and scheming against each other). We call those big sentient forces gods.

And there are, also per animism, smaller consciousnesses. For example, this ONE river has a spirit that’s a kind of child of the spirit of “all rivers everywhere”. The spirit River, with a capital R.

So here’s the thing.

Let’s say you’re The Spirit of Shenandoah Forest. And you’ve got this complicated situation on your hands. And you reach out to the various spirits of the forest for help, but they all basically say “I can’t do all that, all I know how to do is (their domain) stuff!” So, crap. Where can you find a being that’s not dedicated to being a specific thing like a tree, or a river, or a hill? Because they just know how to be a river or whatever.

Boom. Humans.

Humans’ domain, if you think about it, is changing things. We change one energy into another. We change trees into buildings. We change dreams into music. We change food into poop. We change loose energy into magic. We change poverty into prosperity. We ourselves change youth into age. And we ourselves are so changeable too- if you plunk a penguin in the desert, it dies. You plunk humans in the desert and they adapt and thrive. We are “changers”.

So it’s my own personal perspective that us humans are kinda like “outside agents” in Existence. We’re the “Wild Draw 4 card”. And when gods/spirits need that flexibility, we’re what they reach out to. We’re kinda their jack-of-all-trades.

So how bananas is it to pretend you can pick ONE force out there as “your thing”. Or one god as “your god”. That’s like your Craftsman multitool saying “sorry, but from now on, I’m only going to be a pair of pliers. I’ve got all these other tools here, but you can just suck it up and twist in that screw with your fingernail or something, because I’m not doing it. I’ve decided it’s not my thing.” And they get mad, and we get smited, and all kinds of havoc goes down. The myths and legends are full of those situations. And it greatly cheapens our value to the gods and spirits.

I think it’s MUCH better to ask yourself “so what do I believe in? What do I want to see more successful, and healthier in Existence?” And maybe the answer is love, or truth, or learning, or brotherhood. Hell, maybe it’s warfare and violence. But once you’ve set your sights on a personal goal, you can then say “okay, so what gods and spirits are also working to further this domain?” and look for ways to leverage your flexibility and multitasking to help them. Then you’re not just this mopey little bitch asking for a handout all the time, you’re a useful ally who is on the same team.

I was recently part of a really outstanding ritual for Lughnasadh, and my role was to raise a crossroads and establish a ritual gateway to the underworld for a kind of guided meditation ritual. And when I got started, I said “Hekate, I’m about to make a crossroads and a liminal space that involves death and necromantic energies. I think that all of that aligns with you and yours. If it pleases you, then I invite you to come and work with me as I do this”. And the…. Vibrancy of that power, and its result, was just so so much more than it ever used to be when I’d whine to the gods about what I wanted them to do for me.

So that’s my advice. Don’t “pick a god”. It’s dumb. Think about what’s important to you, find allies, and work to support what you believe in with flexibility and dynamism."

The Four Elements of Creation

The Great Mystery reveals itself as the powers of the four directions and these four powers provide the organizing principle for everything that exists in the world. There are four winds, four seasons, four phases of the moon, four stages to humanity’s spiritual evolution, and four basic elements. The four elements are Air, Fire, Water and Earth. The four elements are basically the four forces or polarized rhythmic patterns that create and animate reality. Each element is associated with one of the four directions and has a unique essence or resonant quality that helps us evolve toward completion, toward harmony and balance. Collectively, they define the vibratory infrastructure that literally holds together our resonant field of reality.

Air is associated with the East and relates to spring, morning, the rising sun, expansion and control of the mind, and the breath of life. In the science of physics Air would be the equivalent of Electromagnetic Force, one of the four fundamental forces of nature. Fire is associated with the South and relates to summer, midday, growth, vitality, the sky, and illumination. Fire equates to the Strong Nuclear Force. Water is associated with the West and relates to autumn, twilight, assimilation, emotions, flow, the moon, death and rebirth, and transformation. It is the equivalent of Gravitational Force. Earth is associated with the North and relates to winter, darkness, the earth, purification, sensory awareness, completion, and the form-giving aspect of energy. It equates to the Weak Nuclear Force.

The sacred hoop or medicine wheel illustrates the sequence of development in the process of manifestation. Born of the silent emptiness of the center, vibration cycles around the periphery of the circle. Moving from East (Air) to South (Fire) to West (Water) to North (Earth), vibration bonds the elements, and then reverses its rotation toward emptiness to begin the cycle anew. The unmanifest essence of vibration precipitates this bonding sequence in order to manifest a desired form. The energy of vibration is alive and, because it is alive, it seeks ways in which to express or manifest itself. As Ute-Tiwa shaman Joseph Rael concludes in his book, Being and Vibration, “Apparently materialization occurs because vibration is seeking to purify the center (heart) of its newly formulated form.”(1)

The four elements are the building blocks of nature and interact with humans in the creative process. The elements are living energies, which change and move as we think, and then take the form of our thoughts. Thought is the tool of the mind that shapes physical reality. Every thought, idea, or image in the mind has form and substance. Everything that we perceive began with a thought, for it is the blending of thought forms with the elemental rhythms that shape physical reality. It is the consciousness of humanity that holds the present physical form of all that we perceive. It is the mind that determines the destiny of forms. We are mind. Our Earth is mind. We live in a universe of mind. From photons to galaxies, life is conscious intelligent energy that can form itself into any pattern or function.
