hey there, im a pianist about to enter my 1st year of uni for Bachelor of Arts in music. i wanna audition for the B.Mus for next year. im a level 7 right now (Royal Conservatory of music) & to audition I need to perform Lvl 9 pieces. im really scared I wont be at that level in time (auditions are in march). I feel like I work hard, practicing everyday & such. but then sometimes I feel like I havent worked hard enough, & I constantly go back & forth kicking myself. im just really nervous, advice?
Sorry we’re barely getting back to you, I believe most of the admin base has left tumblr and I stop by every now and then to see whats going on.
Anyways, if you haven’t auditioned yet.
Don’t sweat it. Perform your best pieces, try to remember that the people auditioning you were in the exact same position you were in years ago. And whatever happens, is not a reflection of you as a musician or as a person, but just to where you are in your musical development. You don’t have to be fresh out of high school to go to university. In fact I’d recommend doing research into the best community college music campuses in your area and doing that even if its just for a year or two.
Believe me pursuing music as a career is so much different than pursuing it for passion, and sometimes it pulls the passion away. If at the end of your CC time you still love music you’ll be a much better musician and better able to take advantage of whatever school you end up applying to. If it doesn’t work out, you saved yourself two years of undergrad debt.
