Lasercut works, a UK based company specialsied in prototyping and architectural model-making, has been commissioned by LEXUS to create a fully functioning cardboard model of their latest “IS” sedan car.

LEXUS provided the company with a CAD file, from which 10mm slices were rendered to create the 2D sheets that were then laser cut in cardboard and manually assembled together, using a water based glue which took 10minutes to settle after every application. 

The model’s wheels turn and the doors open, making it an expectional example of craftmanship using humble and sustainable materials.

Simon Hasan has designed these beautiful objects by using only glass, leather and brass creating a very interesting contrast of very high quality materials. The bar stools, glasses and tableware will, over-time, be even more interesting as the leather and brass will wear out whereas the glass will remain intact, exhibiting their passing of time.

Behrad Ghodsi designs 3D printed shoes to create the idea that customers will, in the future, be able to design and manufacture their own footware as it is predicted that everyone will own a 3D printer at home. However, today, the technology is not yet advanced to let everyone be able to use one, so in Ghodsi’s “atossa” shoe project he is creating the idea that everyone is able to use these prepared designs, with CAD files available to everyone who has a 3D printer.

Edward Burtynsky’s exhibition at Palazzo della Ragione in Milan, is an excellent portray of how water has and is at the center of our civilisations, and how the landscape has changed according to our impact with it. Burtynsky travelled around the world to capture the best examples of water and how humans are using it, in order to create awareness on the most important resource of our world. His style is unique, creating photographs that almost seem like surrealist paintings, which capture the eye immediately in a poetic beauty.

"I wanted to understand water: what it is, and what it leaves behind when we're gone. I wanted to understand our use and misuse of it. I wanted to trace the evidence of global thirst and threatened sources. Water is part of a pattern I've watched unfold throughout my career. I document landscapes that, whether you think of them as beautiful or monstrous, or as some strange combination of the two, are clearly not vistas of an inexhaustible, sustainable world.", Edward Burtynsky.

Tel Aviv based designer Talia Sari has designed this storytelling jewelery collection, where every piece has a city street grid mapped into it, creating a story behind every design.

The available cities are: London, Paris, New York, Barcelona, Rome, San Francisco, Tokyo, Tel Aviv and Jerusalem

Marta Bakowski, product design graduate from Central Saint Martins following a master’s degree at Royal College of the Arts, has designed these quirky disc shaped lamps which use chords to create lighting graphic design patterns.

"Rays is a reflection on the evocation of light and the ability of colours and materials to render radiance and brightness according to the surrounding light environment," says Marta.

The Rays lamps have a circular acrylic panel with a mirror LED bulb at the center. The bulb is surrounded by hand woven threads that create a “pointilist effect”. The chords, in waxed polyester, radiate from the center to create this amazing effect.

Chris Onesto’s student project aims to create attention on California’s situation of draught, by designing these water bottles that are filled with the last remaining water of the state.

He designed packaging, ads, website, water delivery service and also the possibility to buy it as a commodity in the stock exchange, in order to make his brand look as real as possible, and make people more aware about saving California’s water.

Willem Heeffer has designed these lamps made from wasted espresso machines, into very cool “up-cycled” designs that come in two matte colours, a black and a white. This is part of a larger project “the city as mine”, looking to re-use items and materials from factories in helsinki, in order to gather information and awareness on wasted materials, their properties and production methods.

The “boiler lamp collection” is a great example of his work, and each lamp is tagged with name and serial number. Heeffer, moreover, gives a matte-finish coloured exterior that play well with the industrial, but playful forms of the holes, through which the warm light shines creating a comfortable atmosphere both for the living/dining area as for the workspace.

limemakers wieland schmidt ‘nervs’ collection tests the limits of 3D printing with their physics defying forms. the three bowls change the way in which we think about tableware by featuring abstract patterns that still have a natural feel. the microscopic mesh structure was influenced by various shapes of nature and was created using technology that stimulates instinctive cell growth.

limemakers is a label for designers and artists to reshape the future of design by embracing 3D fabrication. the berlin-based company merges fashion and product design using generative technologies that hint at what prospective digital production may look like. the nervs line exemplifies this vision as the useful tableware objects offer a challenging yet attractive alternative to conventional styles.

as a vision for the future of transportation, dominic wilcox has realized a driverless car that unites intricate, handmade glass work with cutting-edge technologies. the vehicle is imagined as vessel for nighttime travel, accommodating only a bed inside; while the passenger rests, the car autonomously drives them to their destination.

it is safer to ride in a computer controlled driverless vehicle than to ride in a human driven vehicle.‘ with this in mind, his design reconsiders vehicular transport as a nomadic habitat, a living space on wheels, than merely a mode of transit. without typical safety equipment we’re currently accustomed to — such as air bags and bumpers — the single person ‘sleeper car’ comprises only an automated navigation held within a modular shell, onto which a habitable space can be built.

accompanying the prototype, wilcox has set up a website concept to be used in the year 2059 where users can order a bespoke vehicle to pick them up. the options include selecting the size: 2, 4 or 6 person; the interior: jacuzzi, restaurant, office or bed; and exterior shell design: wood tree house cabin, retro 2015 car or stained glass mini cathedral.

Fabergé Fractals by Tom Beddard

Scotland-based laser physicist-turned-artist and web developer Tom Beddard, aka subBlue, has produced a number of intriguing geometric forms he refers to as Fabergé Fractals. Like an ornate Fabergé egg, Beddard’s creations boast brilliant and intricate design patterns. The English artist uses a formulaic method to create his digitally rendered three-dimensional models.

Beddard explains: “The 3D fractals are generated by iterative formulas whereby the output of one iteration forms the input for the next. The formulas effectively fold, scale, rotate or flip space. They are truly fractal in the fact that more and more detail can be revealed the closer to the surface you travel.

"The fascinating aspect is where combinations of parameters can combine to create structural ‘resonances’ of extraordinary detail and beauty—sometimes naturally organic and other times perfectly geometric. But then like a chaotic system it can completely disappear with the smallest perturbation."

"Wallpaper* magazine invited us to collaborate in a project that would be exposed during design week in Milan. The task was to create 5 food items that were focused around one particular ingredient, also the branding and packaging. We worked with Alfredo Villanueva, choosing "chili" as our main ingredient, so we could stand out our culture bringing the name of "Mexico" to an international exhibition not only by design but also by it’s gastronomy. In a world where everything screams, everything is flashy, BRUTO remains an outsider, confirming that what is well made can get along with simplicity. What is startling is not necessarily noisy."
