Ranger goes with us or we don't go at all.

There are people who plan trips by flight time. By hotel stars. By how close the beach is to the bar.

We plan by one thing only: Can Ranger come with us?

If the answer is no, then we don’t go. Or we drive. Even if that drive is 23 hours long.

Ranger isn’t “just a dog.” I know everyone says that, and I know some people roll their eyes when they hear it, but I don’t care. He’s my child. He’s my responsibility. He’s the living, breathing being who depends on me to keep him safe, comfortable, and loved. And I take that seriously more seriously than convenience, cheaper plane tickets, or anyone else’s opinion.

I don’t trust just anyone to watch him. That’s not paranoia; that’s parenting.

He has routines. He has quirks. He has ways of telling me what he needs that no stranger would notice. I know the exact look he gives when something feels off. I know the difference between his “I’m bored” sigh and his “I’m anxious” pacing. I know how he sleeps best, what foods upset his stomach, which noises make him flinch, and which ones he pretends not to hear.

Leaving him with someone who doesn’t know all that feels wrong in my bones.

So yes we drive.

We drive through the night. We pack the car like we’re moving instead of visiting. We stop more often than Google Maps thinks is reasonable. We plan rest breaks around grass, not gas. We accept that the trip will take longer, cost more, and exhaust us in ways flying never would.

And we do it anyway.

Because the alternative is worse.

The alternative is sitting somewhere “relaxing” while part of my heart is hundreds of miles away, wondering if he’s confused, or lonely, or being hurt waiting for us to come back. The alternative is trusting someone else with something I’m not willing to risk.

People ask, “Isn’t that a lot?” Yes. It is.

They ask, “Wouldn’t it be easier to just board him?” Sure. Easier. But easier isn’t the same as right. I don't trust anyone but close family to stay with him.

Love looks like planning vacations around a dog. Love looks like choosing highways over runways. Love looks like turning “Are we going?” into “Can Ranger come?”

And if the answer is no, then the answer is also no.

There’s something grounding about those long drives. Ranger curled up in the back seat. The steady hum of the road. The quiet certainty that we made the right call. We’re tired, sure but we’re together. And that matters more than arriving quickly.

I didn’t get Ranger with conditions attached. I didn’t sign up to love him only when it’s convenient or when it fits neatly into other people’s expectations. I signed up for all of it the responsibility, the sacrifice, the miles.

So we’ll keep driving. We’ll keep choosing him. We’ll keep being the people who say, “If the dog can’t come, we’re not coming either.”

Because Ranger isn’t baggage.

He’s family.

Why I’m Loving My Life as a Dog Mom (and Why It’s Way Easier Than Being a Human Mom… for Now)

There’s a special kind of joy that comes with being a dog mom. It’s a joy that greets me at the door every day with a wagging tail, sloppy kisses, and a level of enthusiasm usually reserved for celebrities or people who hand out free snacks. My dog doesn’t care what I look like, how productive I’ve been, or whether I remembered to switch the laundry he just loves me, fully and fiercely, in the sweetest, simplest way.

And honestly? I’m fully embracing the season of life where being a dog mom just feels right and yes, a whole lot easier than being a human mom.

Don’t get me wrong: I admire human moms endlessly. Truly, they’re superheroes. Raising tiny humans requires stamina on an Olympic level, patience that could shame monks, and the ability to function on minimal sleep with maximum responsibility. I’m just… not there yet. And that’s okay.

Right now, my life with my dog is the perfect rhythm.

There’s no school drop-off line, just morning walks where we both wake up to fresh air and each other’s company. There are no tantrums in grocery stores unless you count the time she dramatically flopped on the floor because I wouldn’t let her sniff a suspiciously muddy pinecone. There are no PTA meetings, no homework battles, no endless pile of tiny socks to pair.

Instead, there’s companionship. Routine. Soft moments.

We share sunset strolls, weekend adventures, cozy cuddle sessions, and an unspoken understanding that she’s always on my side even when he steals my spot on the couch. Being a dog mom means I get unconditional love with manageable chaos. The vet visits are predictable, the responsibilities are rewarding, and the snuggles are plentiful. I get to nurture, care, and connect, without feeling overwhelmed or unready.

And maybe that’s the best part: this season of dog motherhood is helping me grow into the person I want to be. More patient. More present. More playful. More grateful.

One day I’ll take on the wild, beautiful challenge of being a human mom. But for now? I’m exactly where I want to be with fur on my clothes, treats in my pocket, and a happy pup by my side reminding me every day how wonderful life can be when you love and are loved so simply.

Being a dog mom isn’t just easier it’s deeply fulfilling. And I wouldn’t trade it for anything.

Some want to know exactly what dog they’re bringing home, including the breed, temperament, and potential health considerations. Seeing the parents, understanding the genetics, and having a clear picture of what your dog will be like is important to some families and there’s nothing wrong with that.

Ethical Breeders Do Things Right

An ethical breeder isn’t a backyard breeder. They:

Require contracts that include a clause ensuring the dog must return to them, never to a shelter, if anything happens.

Provide DNA testing and health guarantees for their puppies.

Prioritize the welfare of their dogs over profit.

If a breeder doesn’t have these standards in place, that’s when you should walk away. But when you pay for a puppy from a responsible breeder, you are not contributing to shelters or unethical breeding—you are making a careful, informed choice.

Adoption Isn’t Wrong Either

Adoption is amazing and life-saving, and it’s the right choice for many families. But not everyone is comfortable with the uncertainty that can come with adoption like not knowing the dog’s background, health history, or exact temperament. That’s okay. Everyone’s circumstances and comfort levels are different.

The Real Issue: Backyard Breeders

If there’s anyone to be upset with, it’s the breeders who cut corners, don’t test their dogs, and don’t have proper contracts not the families who carefully purchase from ethical breeders. Choosing to shop responsibly is not contributing to a problem it’s making a thoughtful decision that works for you and your future dog.

Respect Choices

At the end of the day, how people get their dogs is their personal choice. Criticizing someone for spending money on a puppy responsibly is unfair and unnecessary. It’s like telling someone how they should spend their own money only now it’s about their family member and lifelong companion.

The dog world needs less judgment and more understanding. People who adopt, people who shop responsibly, and people who advocate for dog welfare all care about dogs it’s just that their paths are different. And that’s perfectly okay.
