Here’s the newest entry in our Patreon cover series! Deflino Plaza has always been a favorite of ours, it’s just so damn happy. Plus, like most Mario tunes, it has some cool jazzy chords thrown in. We decided to do something a bit funky and add a few chip elements in as well. We call it Chipfunk….I guess :). Anyways it was a great chance for Patrick to show off some bass and guitar chops, and it was great fun in the process. At its core Melancholy Republic is built upon the best and most poignant memories from JRPG stories, their cities and their music. Exploring classic JRPG cities such as Final Fantasy's Midgar and Lindblum or Chrono Trigger's Zeal are key inspirations for Melancholy Republic. The greatest JRPG moments are found in uncovering the hidden corners and small stories of the game's populations.

Listen to: Mario 64 Jolly Roger Bay by Fat Bard

We were asked by a Patreon subscriber to make a Dubstep version of “Jolly Roger Bay” from Mario 64 this month, and boy was it fun. Dubstep is not a genre either of us are very familiar with, and we learned a lot about synthesis manipulation while working on the cover. We’re pretty proud of what we came up with despite having never done a song of this genre in our lives. One tricky thing about Dubstep is that every single song is in a minor key (dark/evil/sad sounding), and “Jolly Roger Bay” is in a major key (happy/uplifting/calm sounding), so that made things a bit tough!
