“Germany and London are too close, are they?” he raised an eyebrow. “Do you wish to get as far as possible away from here? Buy, yes, of course you may come. Might want to ask your parents beforehand, though.”

"Oh, yes, Papa." Violet says, smiling brightly, before pausing, suddenly hesitant. "Could you help me ask them? I think it would be easier if you...come with me." Violet says, slowly sitting beside him at the piano, lightly pressing a few random chords.

Violet sits quietly at the piano, watching Erik's fingers move quickly over the ivory keys, one of her small hands placed on top of the piano in order to hear the vibrations. "Papa," she muses, "The next time you go out of France, may I come with?" It was a bold proposition, but Violet was desperate for some form of travel, and other than the occasional trip to Paris, she didn't get to explore much. Nevermind overseas.

He looked up from the keyboard to look at her. “I would love to show you the world, my dear. Traveling is a wonderful experience. There is so much to learn everywhere you go. I am fine with it if your parents are, my beloved. Have you talked to them about it?”

"I... Not of late." Violet admits softly, biting her lip. "I'm afraid they might say no."

“I’m sorry to be such a disappointment. I know you expected more of me.”

“Sweetheart, no…” he protested as he raised his eyes to her. “Why would you ever think you were?”

Violet was deflated after coming off the stage for one of the singing competitions she’d signed up for, and at this rate, she wasn’t going to win.

“Did you hear me up there, Papa? Well, I didn’t, and even I could tell that I was the worst they’d ever heard.” she whispers, looking to him.

Erik frowned and shook his head as he rose to his feet and slowly walked over to her. He didn’t quite agree with what she was saying and surely she knew it.

“Don’t be so harsh with yourself, sweetheart.” he added with a reassuring smile. “You did well.”

"Well for a child." she mumbles, seemingly lost in thought for a few moments, before Violet eventually follows her grandfather back to their seats to watch the rest of the young singers. For once, Violet was glad to have her disability when one of them hit a supposed rough note, and she saw the judges, as well as Erik, flinch.

Violet laughs, smiling. “Mother might get cross at you if it did.” she stands, gathering the piece back together. “Papa, may I ask you something?” she pauses, looking to him. “Where did you learn to compose?”

He raised his visible eyebrow at her. “Oh really? I would have never guessed.” Sometimes annoying her mother brought him great joy. “Good question…” He shrugged. “The easy answer is that it simply came to me when I was very young and I have been doing it ever since.”

Violet grins, playing a soft melody on the keys. “Sometimes I wish I was already famous so I could just…travel. Somewhere far away, like America. Have you been to America, Papa?” she knew her grandfather travelled many places, and she was always eager to get some more information about his adventures.

“I have been to America, although I wouldn’t say I enjoyed it all that much. America is a bit overrated. Quite honestly, I was very happy to eventually return to France.” He shrugged a shoulder and continued. “You might enjoy London. Or Germany. I spent some time in Germany and I enjoyed it.”

“Papa.” she says in a soft, yet unwavering voice. “I can’t sleep with that party going on downstairs.” Nevermind the fact that she couldn’t hear anything, but Violet would give anything for a few minutes more with the piano. She glances to him, before back to the keys. Violet stops playing, hands in her lap, fingers twisted together. “So did you like it?” she asks, looking to her handwritten piece, before to her grandfather to read his lips.

2. Covered in blood

Erik’s heart nearly stopped within his chest as set eyes on his grandchild. She was covered in blood and the eyes behind the mask grew wide with horror as he looked at her. What on earth had happened to her?!

“Violet!” he gasped as he rushed to her side. “What’s happened?”

She was bleeding. But there was no pain. Really, Violet had no idea how she’d gotten herself in this position. There seemed to be no cuts, nothing of the sort. And she was positive she’d done nothing to harm anyone, until she saw the body there, dead, on the floor in front of her. And Violet remembered him entering, gripping her roughly and telling her to be quiet or else she would “regret it”.

All she felt was an overwhelming exhaustion and tears that burned.

“Papa…?” she asks, turning to look at him, shaking. “Papa, he…and I…”

Erik was beyond relieved that she seemed to be all right. It wasn’t her blood and only then did he notice the real source of the blood. Only Erik didn’t care at that moment. To him, his grandchild was most important now and the dead body could wait. After all, it wouldn’t run away!

“Come here, angel…” he said as he approached her, pulling her into his arms. He placed a calming kiss to her head and ran a hand up and down her body. “It’s all right.”

“I…ru-ruined the candleholder.” she whispers, voice breaking as the tears fell. Violet was reluctant to hug him back, not too focused on what was around her, in some form of shock. Thank God her parents weren’t home to see this!

She looks to see the candleholder in pieces on the floor, the one she barely remembered hitting the man with. Violet felt sick, burying her face in Erik’s chest, whimpering.

“I’m sorry, Papa. S-So sorry…”

Erik knew exactly how she was feeling in just that moment. For he had only been a few years younger than she was now when he had killed the evil man who held him locked away in a cage. Of course he knew that it wasn’t right to kill people, but there were times when that was the only option.

“You did what you had to.” He assured, softly as he scooped her into his arms.

Violet doesn't look back--how could she? The body was right there, staring at her, it seemed. So she squeezes her eyes shut and lets Erik carry her into another room, barely feeling him set her down on a bed, or maybe a couch.

She curls into a ball, only remembering the awful scene of the man falling to the floor, head bleeding as the blood covered everything, her hands still vibrating from the impact.

“Hmm… Alright. I never told you to do anything, though. I am sure your parents would be furious, as always.” He visibly flinched when she played the wrong note. “Yes. Thank you.”  

What time was it? She had to be going to sleep soon. “Don’t you have school in the morning? Perhaps you should get some rest….” Although, he did not wish to continue his conversation with Gustave and that would inevitably happen once she went to sleep.
