Is there anything more beautiful in this life than two souls bound only by a hunger to see the extraordinary in each other?

[Plava, Haaki]
‘They’re hardly there most of the time. It’s only me and two of my brothers left, and one of them lives in the city as a guard. The other one’s a hunter and spends all his time up in the mountains. But even if they did see you, they wouldn’t mind, really. I mean, if they can put up with me and the dogs they can put up with anything.’
Not that the dogs were causing much trouble at the moment. The familiar scent of burning spiced honey from the mead had calmed them and they were dozing off, settled around Haaki like a set of comfortable furs. It felt almost like old times, bar the ashes from the vampires being blown into the undergrowth, and that was something to be warily enjoyed.
He swished the bottle back and forth as he considered her question, the priesthood, how far removed the vast stone chambers were when he was sat in the aftermath of a fight. Those dry old words felt much less real than blood, heat and hard breath in the chest.
‘I’m, um… supposed to do the sermons. Not much good at it, to be honest. I came to Skyrim wanting to start a new chapel of Stendarr, because… well, between you and me, I find all the books and stuff boring.’ He hunched his shoulders forward, leaning on his knees. ‘As for abstaining… they don’t make me, but I got myself into trouble with that sort of thing before. So I make me.’
She turned a little shy, but admitted “-I’m not great with books m’self,”
“I mean, I didnae get taught to read, but I taught myself enough ta get by. I’m not very good at it though,” smiling bashfully at the Nord. “-yer smart to…abstain, I mean, I should probably follow yer lead, but I’ve been drinkin’ since I were real little-like. So it’s kinda weird to try ‘n change it.”
“Startin’ a new chapel though - that’s….admirable. Startin’ things from scratch is - is hard,” her smile slowly fell though, and her brows drew into an expression of concern.
“I - I don’t know how safe that is, though,” Plava cast her eyes to the ash pile in the distance. “I don’t know if - well - you might have heard before everyone else fer all I know - but - there was apparently a whole Hall, near Dawnstar? I ent never been that far, but word was that it were attacked a few days ago,”
“Vampires were supposed ta ‘ave sacked it,” worry warbled into her tone for her newfound friend “-’m sorry if you happened to know any of them. But…oh, you will be safe won’t you? Closer to a city I mean? I wouldn’t - I’d hate if something happened to you. It’s gettin’ unsafe out there, but I think people need places like chapels to stay strong an…unharmed. Ta feel safe.”
She suddenly found herself quite worried for her new friend, and didn’t want any harm to come to him just from trying to spread the word of Stendarr, even if Stendarr and beastfolk didn’t really mix.

“Hey there sailor,” said Plava with a grin, the Redguard spoke with a heavy accent that sounded like it fit more in a Nordic bayou than coming out of her face. "What brings someone like you to tha ass end-a nowhere?"
Plava stuck her hands into her ragged leather armour, she was always incredibly friendly to strangers. Her large white dog, more like a cloud on legs really, was sniffing around the sailor's feet curiously.

[Plava, Haaki]
Some of the chill came back with her final question, though. He swung the bottle in his hand a few times, tapping it against his opposite palm.
‘Aye. Believe me, I’ve been there. Still am there, in a lot of ways. Believe it or not–’ he paused, lifting the bottle pointedly ‘–I wasn’t always a priest. I’ve tried farmer, hunter, soldier…’
…bandit, assassin, skooma addict…
‘…but nothing seems to work out for me.’
He spent a moment frowning before remembering Plava’s story, a tale of far more hardship than his own, and did his best to tone down his woeful look. The dogs helped with that. Dog rested his head on his master’s lap and Splendid scrabbled up a knee, where she found a more comfortable spot curled against his stomach. Haaki swept his cloak over her and continued,
‘I’ll tell you one thing. You weren’t missing out on much with farming. Well, not unless you like getting up at three in the morning to clean cow shit – I mean, mess – out of a shed. If you wanted to give it a try, or if you want to get away from things, you can always help me out on our family farm.’
Haaki bit the cork from the bottle, spat it into the bushes and took a long drink, letting the burn wash down his throat with the memory of heather and honey. It was like taking a first breath after swimming underwater. He let the taste warm him and chase away the terror of the attack while he listened to Plava, dogs calming down at his side.
"Really? They wouldnae mind?" she took such a simple sort of joy from the idea, though farming was anything but fun, the idea of putting her tremendous strength to work in a way that wasn't fighting or hurting somebody appealed to her.
"I think I would like that, y'know, puttin' my hands to use that 'ent just fightin' - I can...I can do other stuff," she said - almost like she was trying to reassure herself of that fact - and that she really could do more. It was a scared, hesitent optomism, but it was there.
Plava, though perhaps not socially the smartest of the bunch, got the sense of a long and somewhat storied life from Haaki. Something about things not working out for him set off a pang in her chest. Wasn't this whole ratrace all about finding somewhere to fit, anyway? It was for her, anyway.
"I hope this priesthood thing...works out fer you then," there was soft sincerity in her tone. "-Lotta folk got lofty dreams 'bout bein' hereos and great adventurers and they're nice enough dreams 'n all but I think the thing people need tha most from life is a place that they fit," unfortunately, what people wanted and what people needed was a hard distinction to make sometimes. "I like to think I'd find a place eventually. You sound like you've tried a fair few. Strugglin' is...okay, I think. We jus' gotta strive ta be better than we were the day before,"
Plava didn’t have the hate in her heart to judge, with all that has happened before, she would be consumed by it all and probably a lot more angry as a person if she was. Plava wondered if this came across to Haaki at all. She hoped that it would.
She put in effort to give the Nord a tiny smile, despite the hard battle they'd just suffered through, if only to release the tension that blood on the breeze drew.
"How're ya likin' the priesthood anyways? Do you hafta like, do a lotta sermon type stuff? I can't imagine anyone would be bored listenin' to you, but I bet it's a lot to remember. Do they make you abstain from all tha fun stuff?" Plava asked innocently, amber eyes wide with curiosity while Frostpaw tiredly rolled onto his back.
