You can tell he’s actually becoming genuinely interested in her as a person here because he keeps turning around to look at her as he speaks. I know from first hand experience that, if you’re not really interested in the conversation and have something else to focus on (such as not tripping in a dark tunnel), you don’t look at the person you’re talking to. But he keeps actively looking over his shoulder to make eye contact and engage her.
