more than once, malak has woken julian up from an impromptu nap just in time for a meeting by pecking incessantly at his window. julian doesn’t know how malak knew where he lives and at this point he’s too afraid to ask
one time when julian was drunk, malak brought him a silver screw he found on the ground, and julian started crying from happiness. now malak brings him all kinds of shiny things and julian has a little drawer with everything from him
as julian becomes more in-tune with his magic, he’s able to understand malak, like asra can understand faust. the thing is, he thinks all magicians can understand every animal. so one time he’s in the middle of some experiment and malak is whining to be fed. julian can’t understand why the apprentice isn’t doing it and he asks them as much.
julian: why aren’t you feeding malak he’s been crying for it for ten minutes and he’s SO LOUD.
mc: oh is that what he wants? i’ll feed him
julian: wait you don’t understand him
mc: of course not, i couldn’t understand someone else’s familiar
julian: someone else’s WHAT
when julian and mc take off on their journey he teaches malak to sit on his shoulder and say “arrrrrr” to increase his pirate cred
the effect is slightly ruined because malak keeps trying to groom julian who secretly doesn’t mind
