Hello ^^ no request, just curious to know your thoughts on how some dragons evolved to consume rocks! I was a dragon who didn't have rocks in its diet, so I'd like to know what it was like. Did you eat them for stimulation? Did they have a flavor? Were they a fuel of sorts? Is it to regulate weight for one reason or another like how crocodiles eat rocks to keep from floating too high?
To be honest I have speculated on this a fair bit, and the answer I’ve come up with is that,
It’s likely different dragons evolved to swallow rocks for different reasons. Some for the reasons you’ve listed, and some for other reasons.
I personally ate rocks for a couple different reasons:
- Partially for the minerals (salt, calcium etc)
- Partially because the rocks in my stomach helped me to grind up fibrous plant matter in my stomach and well as bone fragments so they could be more easily digested.
Fun fact: Many animals today still swallow stones and pebbles for this exact reason! The stones they swallow are called gastroliths.
These grindstones have been found in the stomachs of modern day crocodiles, alligators, seals, and some herbivorous birds!
Animals who make use of gastroliths often lack the necessary grinding teeth to completely and effectively masticate their food. For instance, a crocodile swallows its food whole, but it doesn’t stop to crunch up the bones on the way down.
✨So Mother Nature figured it out by taking the long way round instead of just giving animals the right kind of jaws and teeth ✨
But it’s a fact of nature: evolution is lazy and takes shortcuts wherever it can.
I hope you enjoyed learning about gastoliths with me today🎉🥰
And to answer your other questions:
- It was very satisfying to crinchcronch rocks, especially feldspar and limestone. The softer rocks crumbled very easily which was satisfying, but the harder ones were nice to chip away at and gnaw on.
- Different rocks tasted different, but most of them had a kind of dusty cold flavour (?) if that makes sense. There wasn’t a lot in terms of strong flavours to be honest but it was more the texture and coldness of them that was appealing.
- I’ve heard some dragonkin say that they swallowed rocks to keep in their gizzard as a kind of firestarter to produce a spark when they rubbed together. The purpose was to ignite gas produced in the gas bladder/second stomach/applicable organ to aid in fire breathing. Unfortunately fire breathing wasn’t a skill I possessed so I don’t have tonnes of info about this one lol.
But yes thank you for asking the question! I do find stuff like this absolutely fascinating as you might be able to tell lol. But I hope you enjoyed hearing what I had to say about it hehe
✨If anyone has anything else to add on the subject of rockeating, please do add to this post! I’ll be adding this to my blog directory for easy reference✨
