The modern video game industry’s treatment of preservation is extremely similar to that of silent-era Hollywood, where movies and shorts were treated as disposable media for quick profit. It didn’t end well, and 90% of silent films are considered lost. Having physical media isn’t just ownership, but an unconscious mass effort of spreading art on a mass scale to the point where it increases the likelihood of that piece of art surviving generations after it was made.
