How will the others react to Caleb's backstory?
The cat is out of the bag (or rather, burned inside a house)... 🔥
I was honestly surprised that they had Caleb reveal his backstory this early. I thought for sure they would sit on that until season 2, but the more I think about it, the more it makes sense for the animated series to do it this way.
In the campaign, Caleb only told Beau and Nott, and it was as early as session 18. And he only revealed it to Beau because it was part of her deal to let him visit the Cobalt Soul library in Zadash. His main reason to tell her was strategic. Practical even. A transaction, if you so will.
In the animated series, the dynamic and circumstances are quite different. First and foremost, he has been made by Owelia. Beau already thinks he is a Volstrucker. He doesn't have his necklace anymore. Owelia sent his name to Trent, and there is nothing stopping him from finding Brenn and "take him back home".
Caleb doesn't reveal his past to these strangers because he trusts them, or to get inside a library. He tells them because he has nothing left to lose.
But maybe, these weird yet very capable people can help him.
Strength in numbers, right?
SO! Here are my predictions on how the rest of the Mighty Nein will react to Caleb's scorching backstory. 🔥
Nott - Is already ride or die for Caleb after spending an extensive amount of time with him on the road where she has seen his kind and vulnerable sides. She will focus on how Trent is a manipulative abuser who took advantage of a child (she already knows that Caleb is wanted for murder, and is not interested in turning him in).
Jester - She might not have known Caleb for as long as Nott, but she is an optimist who sees the best in people and that includes Caleb. She is also shown to be empathetic, so I imagine that she would be able to see the pain and regret Caleb carry and just wanna make that go away by showing him kindness.
Mollymauk - The past is (quote) "dreadfully boring". He doesn't care who you used to be, only who you are right now, and if you are trying to be better.
Fjord - I can see some trepidation from his side, since he is trying to emulate his captain and probably wonder what Vandran would do in this situation? He might express some concerns, but in the end, he too is a person who is trying to bury his past, so who is he to judge someone who's doing the same?
Beau - Beau is an hardass that would not look past a person's crimes from the goodness of her heart. But right now, there's one thing she cares about more than anything else: Her mission. And Caleb just gave her the name of Owelia's employer. The guy behind the residuum smuggling. The dude with ties to the Kryn "weapon theft". And Caleb clearly has no loyalty for the man. Whether she likes it or not, her and Caleb's interests align in at least some regard, and together they have a real chance of uprooting the corruption in the Empire. If they stick together.
