You know what's funny? For these close-up scenes they had to actually shoot the scene twice. First in a general view, then the close-up. And there was a guy on set, whose job was making sure that both shots were consistent. As in, if Spock was raising his right eyebrow in the general shot, he shouldn't raise his left eyebrow in the close-up.

So every time Kirk looks at Spock with these unexplainable "fool-in-love" smiles, there was literally a guy on set screaming: "Well, Bill, you looked at Spock in the last shot with these silly heart eyes, I don't know why but whatever... Now you must repeat it, and make sure to look as stupidly in love as the last time!"
