The bidders’ greatest fears
Eisuke: Animals never being able to get along with him haha. Not that he’d ever admit it, but to be utterly and entirely alone.
He’s been on his own for most of life, and he hasn’t even realized how lonely he really was until he met the MC. Honestly, I think the MC serves as his Living Emotional Crutch—without her, he’d completely lose it. It might be a bit of a stretch, but I’d like to say that he is dependent on her, and not the other way around, despite how their relationship dynamic is portrayed. If his character were written a bit darker, I wouldn’t put it past him to destroy anything that could potentially be an obstacle to them, trapping the MC in a poisonous, all take-no give relationship. In the most extreme case, he’d have the potential to be a yandere. Damn.
Soryu: Not being able to protect someone he truly cared about.
Time and time again, this is what Soryu would promise the MC each time their relationship would progress. Though to be honest, I think he’s trying to reassure himself more than the MC. Soryu’s the kind of person who lives religiously by a code of honor, and protecting someone he loves is number one on his list. If he ever failed to uphold that, he wouldn’t just be losing a loved one, he’d be damaging his most fundamental principles as an individual. Honestly, he would rather die than force himself to live with his greatest failure.
Baba: Being trapped in something he’d never be able to escape from.
Baba, being the adventurous and uninhibited person he is, enjoys freedom with a passion. He’s always doing one unpredictable thing after another to keep things interesting, and he prefers living life that way. Moreover, I think this is one of the reasons why he enjoys his job as a thief, besides fulfilling his childhood goal. If he were to be restricted in any way whatsoever, I don’t think he’d be able to handle it—especially if he wouldn’t have a way out. Being a thief, it is imperative that Baba have an escape route for everything. Not being able to escape from something is a huge blow to his sense of freedom as a thief and a person. In fact, I can especially see him avoiding lifestyles that require strict routines.
Ota: To be betrayed by someone he loved and trusted—again.
After being betrayed once by someone he trusted deeply, Ota had to create his angelic persona to prevent this from ever happening again. It was very difficult for him and the MC to start a relationship because his previous experiences always reminded him not to put faith in others anymore. I’m going to assume this is why he loves teasing the MC—his sly and sadistic personality aside, he constantly teases her to test her, to see if she’ll really stick with him or leave. If she ever betrayed him, he wouldn’t be able to take it a second time—he’d completely change as a person. Nothing would make him open up his heart to anyone ever again.
Mamoru: Being forced to kill someone he loved for the sake of the greater good.
He already lost someone important to him once, but being the one to end his loved one’s life? Hell, no. Being a detective, it isn’t unusual to assume that he’d one day have to choose between the greater good and the life of his loved one. If he ever got to cross that bridge, he’d be conflicted between his morals, albeit somewhat jaded, and his happiness. He may have lost most of his motivation as a detective, but Mamoru shows that he still has his principles intact. If the MC were put into that situation, she’d most likely ask him to choose the others over her, and that would destroy him even more. If he were unable to save either of them, he’d never be able to live with the crippling guilt of his decision.
MC: Not being good enough for anything.
Note: (I’m not talking about you as the player character, but rather the MC presented to us in the narrative)
As featureless as the protagonist may seem, there’s one trait of hers that constantly shows itself time and time again—her complete lack of self-worth. She criticizes herself often over everything she does, and the fact that she’s surrounded by the elite bidders most of the time doesn’t help, either. When she gets into a relationship with any of the bidders, she’ll often berate herself for not being pretty enough, smart enough, strong enough—anything enough for her boyfriend. I assume this is why she always withholds her needs from her partner and tries to overcompensate in the relationship. Her feelings of inadequacy, added with her nurturing nature keep her from asserting herself. I wanna give you a hug, MC.
… though this might just be me overthinking things. All of this is merely hypothetical, just-for-fun, fan interpretation. None of this is canon whatsoever. If it were canon, KBTBB as we know it would be one huge dysfunction junction.
