I wake up, cold and surrounded by darkness. I start panicking until I remember that I decided to take a nap at the park. I look beside me and see my book and picnic basket, all the food having spilled out onto ths delicate pages of my hard cover novel. Frustration builds inside of me- But I have no one but myself to blame for my own foolishness. I gather up the mess and throw away the food in the nearest trash bin. I grab the empty basket and ruined book, and start walking home. I pull my phone out of my pocket, and discover it's dead. I sigh, and continue my journey through the dark. My neighborhood is much quieter than usual, but I ignore it. The darkness of night is suddenly broken by the red and blue lights of an ambulance speeding down the street. Through the back window, I see my girlfriend sitting on a bench, weeping. My heart starts beating out of my chest, and i try to run after the vehicle, but it's gone before I can even build up a pace. A million worries go through my mind- was it her mother? Had she finally succumbed to her illness? Was it her dog? What happened? I decided the best course of action would be to get home, charge my phone, and call her. She would need my support for whatever happened. I arrive home shortly, and see that all the lights in the house are on. This was unusual for a home of three people, especially in the middle of the night. I open the door and a bright light temporarily blinds me. Once I regain my composure, I look around and see that my living room has been replaced with a bright hospital setting. Doctors and nurses, machines and medicine. And my girlfriend, crying and screaming outside the door. They won't let her in, they won't let her see whoever is on the table. I try to see past the crowd of medical staff in front of me, but to no avail. I ask what's happening, and get ignored. I set my basket and book on the nearest counter, and walk closer to the doctors. Before I can open my mouth to ask a question, I see who's on the table. A young man, 17, maybe 18. Short dark hair, tan skin. Jeans, no shirt. It has been cut up and discarded in an attempt to access the bullet wound on his chest. Directly over his heart. A doctor removes the anesthesia mask from his face and my heart stops. My ears start ringing as I look down at my own lifeless body- the doctors have issued me dead, it was too late to save me. I follow the doctor out of the room and listen to him tell Lilith of my passing. He asks her to tell him what happened, and she says there was a shooting at the park. I had fallen asleep and she was reading my book, and couldn't move me out of the way in time. I died on the way to the hospital, with the love of my life holding my sleeping hand. I watched the tears pour down her face, but mine was dry. My death was sudden and unexpected. Painless, I wasn't even conscious when I was hit. So i don't know how to feel. I grabbed my jean jacket from the doctors counter, and followed Lilith out of the hospital.
