when elijah asked about rebekah . klaus despise the fact that he didn’t know where all his siblings were . a part of him reminisced on the days he kept them safe in a coffin , but in hindsight he could see how dark that thought really was .

‘ although i wouldn’t be surprised if she was in paris with marcel . ’

listening to elijah talk briefly about hayley didn’t stop him from posing his next question . he didn’t want to watch hayley and elijah make the same mistake they made last time .

‘ and what did you guys talk about ? ’

Elijah smiled softly at the thought of Rebekah and Marcel out in the world together. He was glad his sister was finally getting the happiness she deserved after all these centuries.

“We talked. That is between the two of us Niklaus.” he said his words pointed, but not harsh. He didn’t know how long they had, any of them and he didn’t want to waste it on this with him.

“So witches? What could hey want with us?” He asked in a clear attempt to change the subject.

she stayed silent as she listened to his words, trying to calm the racing of her heart as she both felt and heard his words. “ i love you too, “ her words quiet as hayley whispered them out for only him to hear. hoping that her actions would speak for themselves, she stood in the spot, not pulling away.

No sooner had the words left her lips, than he pressed his against hers again. This time holding her tighter to him, his arms holding close, When he finally released her again he stayed with his head against hers. “Now, let’s enjoy our time together. Ok?” He asked her, for the first time in a long time feeling somewhat hopeful about what was going on around him, at least when ti came to Hayley.

she frowned gently as she resisted the urge to melt into his touch; hayley was going to need something more definite and concrete before she decided what the kiss meant to her. they had both spent so many years playing will they or won’t they ? “ before i decide anything, what did it mean to you ? we both have never been too clear on what we wanted, “

Elijah’s eyes glanced down. “It meant you are real and not a figment of my imagination. It meant..”He stopped speaking, his forehead leaning against hers. “It meant, that I love you. I always have and always will.” He whispered so only she could hear. “But I will as always stand to the side and be what you need me to be.” He told her, giving her the choice to stand there or to walk away.

he followed alongside his brother yet hearing hayley name fall from his brothers lips did cause a curve to form on the side of his mouth . a smirk visible to the eye . he recalled the pain elijah had once he found out that hayley was dead , and the role he had played in her death . they were both broken about it ; and apart of klaus was bitter towards elijah for it when his brother was without his memory but that was now all in the past and somehow they were given a second chance .

‘ you two talked ?’

he tried not to pry but he did have hope for elijah and hayley .

“Freya, I have not see our sisters. Is Rebekah here too?” He inquired.

Mentioning Hayley maybe wasn’t the best choice for his first topic of conversation with his brother. But he also wasn’t going to avoid it. Keeping secrets and lying to each other over the centuries had often caused their problems.

“Yes. We did. She was the first I saw after this....happened.” He indicated being there.

hayley was shocked as elijah took her in his arms and kissed her. she couldn’t remember the last time they had kissed; it had been years ago. when the threat of the hollow was non-existent; when hope was still young. it didn’t take long for her to respond to the kiss, running her fingers through his dark hair. allowing them a few moments, the brunette pulled away gently, looking at him, “ we need to talk about what that was, “ her words slightly breathless.

Relief washed over him as she didn’t push away, she kissed him back. But her words had him looking at her, thinking. “That was nothing and everything.” He responded. “Its whatever you want it to be. A hello or something more.” He told her, brushing a strand of hair that had fallen, his hand brushing across her cheek.

somewhat enjoying yet another chance at life, katherine’s step had gained almost a skip to it in the hours since she had experienced her awakening. it was strange, and undoubtedly would come with dire consequences, but for now at least there was nothing wrong with trying to have a little fun. her ‘fun’ ( feeding, of course ) was interrupted by an all too familiar tone, forcing her to stop in her tracks. truthfully at this point katherine did not know how to respond to the voice she recognised. taking a moment, she turned to him, rolling her eyes in an over dramatic manner. ‘oh you’re back too? and here I was thinking I was special.’

The edge in the tone of her voice let him know which of the doppelgangers it was that was in front of him. “Katarina.” He said simply. “I see death has not changed your disposition.” He added. “So, I am guessing you had nothing to do with all of this.” He stated, sliding his hands in his pocket.

deciding to bridge the distance between the two of them, the brunette hybrid took a few steps forwards before placing a hand softly over his clothed chest. right where his heart would be located, “ there is no point in wondering about what ifs. what happened happened and we are back here among the living, “ hayley knew she didn’t want to waste her time considering what if. “ i have missed you too, “

Elijah placed his hand over hers on his chest, the warm feeling of her hand on his chest caused a soft sigh to leave his lips. He paused for a moment, before wrapping his arms around her and pulled her into a kiss. He knew she was there, he knew she was real, but until his lips found hers, he hadn’t let himself truly believe what was happening, that all of this was real. But he knew as soon as he felt her against him, that this wasn’t something he made up in his head in the veil.

arms wrapped around his brother while their bodies rocked from side to side briefly from the collision . the last time they were with each other they were pushing a white oak stake into each other’s chest . it was a bittersweet moment but the original hybrid couldn’t think of a better ending for an immortal than to die beside his brother . klaus had chosen to sacrifice himself for his daughter and elijah made sure he didn’t go at it alone . always and forever was a family motto that his noble brother stood by until the very end . he had heard of people finding peace and hoped that his brother had found it with hayley but there was no peace for klaus only a void and emptiness he rather not mention . his arms were still wrapped around his brothers shoulder buried in his embrace .

‘ i missed you brother . ’

The comfort of his brothers arms around him was the right feeling. He was glad to have him around. “I missed you.” He replied nodding as he stepped away from the embrace. “Any idea who brought us back?” He asked as he began walking down the street his brother next to him, it felt right, it as it should have. “I saw Hayley.” He added.

‘ elijah . ’

it was the only word he could grasp when he saw his brother for the first time after their deaths . klaus could feel his heart beating in his chest almost violently at the ghostly figure . he didn’t know if it was his mind playing tricks on him but the thought of elijah stand there made him mourn the life they should have had . elijah marrying hayley and them all raising hope together but fate had other plans . taking a step forward his eyes confirmed what his heart already knew which was that elijah wasn’t just some figment of his imagination . a small lift on the side of his lips curved into a gentle smile . it had meant the world to see elijah now more than ever before . the two of them had been through everything over the pass thousand + years and with what he knew he would face next , he couldn’t imagine anyone else to help face the dark abyss with . his brother had seen him at his worst and in the end he had seen him at his best and seeing elijah now only made their family motto ring louder into the clouds always and forever.

The sound of his name coming from his brothers voice, spread a smile across his features without him having to see the other. He had lived his life beside him, even at the times he was at his worst, Elijah was always going to be beside him. So it should have not surprised anyone when Klaus had to die, Elijah went with him, took his own life too. He turned around and saw him. Without thought he embraced his brother. “Niklaus”

there had been a lot of regrets and what ifs from everyone that had been involved that day. when she had seen hope in the afterlife, she had saw the pain and regret her daughter held but like hope, hayley didn’t blame elijah. “ i did what was right for everyone in that moment. i did what i had to do to protect hope. i was ready to die, “ hayley knew that if she had to die, she would want to die protecting her family. she had made peace with her decision in that moment. “ you have protected me from the very beginning. you were the one that took me into the mikaelson home and swore you would protect both hope and i. “

He knew she was right and he knew that given the circumstances that there was nothing different that he could have done. But he was after all this time unable to let it go, unable to forgive himself. “I know you did. And I only wish, I had been the one instead of you.” He told her watching her. “I know. and, I would protect you even now, in whatever this is.” He said holding his hands up. “I have missed you.” He told her sincerely.

With a swift nod, Vicki’s attention drew to the drink that was placed in front of her, one hand cradling the shot glass before knocking it back,, slamming it against the counter top with an appreciative smile at the bartender. “ So what brings you back ? “ She asked curiously, wincing at the sour taste that edged down her throat.

Elijah nodded his head to the bartended indicating his own need of a drink. “Now that is the question isn’t it. Or more like should be who brought me back.” He said as he picked up the newly poured glass of amber liquid. “What brings you to the city?” He asked.

standing in front of the male seemed like something out of a dream. he hadn’t changed at all physically but she swore she could almost see a war behind his eyes. was this how they were going to be from now on ? “ when i saw klaus, i was hoping to find you around the city too, “ keeping her words detached and light. part of her wanted him to pull her into his arms and make her forget everything else, “ you know it’s not your fault, “ hayley knew elijah ( after all, she had known him before giving birth to hope ) and she knew he would be blaming himself for the events that had led to her death.

He could feel the emotion of the moment starting to chip away at his walls and his resolve to remain in control and strong falling to the wayside. He could see her holding strong where she stood but then, her words, her knowing him well enough to know he was blaming himself, It was more than he could take from her in the moment. He closed his eyes taking a in a deep breath, steadying the storm brewing in his soul. “It was my fault. You shouldn’t have to be here liek this. You should never have been gone.” He told her. “I should have protected you better.” hanging his head, unable to look her in the eyes. His heart finding that place gain that shattered it over and over again. His mind raging the war against itself, blaming him for not being stronger, for not being able to save the one woman he had ever truly loved.

after reuniting with klaus, hayley knew that elijah would be around the city somewhere. her heart begun to race a little faster at the thought of seeing him again but also there was a hesitation. the last time she had seen the original had been the day of her death. deciding to leave it up to whatever higher power was out there, the brunette did not realise she would bump into him so soon, “ hey, “ her face neutral as she looked at the man before her. he looked good.

Of all the people he would run into, Hayley was one he hoped was back, but wasn’t prepared to see. Last time he saw her she was burning in the sun and he wasn’t able to save her. His heart had broken a thousand times over each day when he remembered who she was and that he had let her die. He did his best to still his face and hide the wave of emotions that he felt with seeing the one love he had experienced in his life. “I’m glad to see you.” He said holding back from moving closer to her. He had always had great control of his own emotions, but it was taking the greatest effort of his life right now to not crack in front of her.

Was the city proving lonesome? Vicki was finding it hard to adjust to her newly found return to the living. She was trying to be on her ‘best behaviour which, normally became the opposite whenever temptation was involved. With emotions heightened, and temptation being around every corner, she knew her fix would only be around the corner. Sitting by the bar, ordering a shot of tequila and a cocktail, Vicki turned as she heard the male behind her.

“ You sound lost , either you’ve had a heavy night or you’re new to town ? “

Elijah chuckled at he statement. “Not lost or new to town. Definitely an interesting night.” He said as he watched her. She was definitely vampire, but htat was all he could gleam so far. “Just hadn’t expected to ever be back here.” He told her taking a seat the bar, but not right next to her.

Finding himself on the edge of a very familiar town Elijah couldn’t help but wonder what he was doing there. His last memory was him and Klaus on a bench. He was glad his suit still looked perfect. He adjusted his sleeves, ensuring they were properly situated, before beginning to walk through the familiar streets of the place his family once ruled. If he was back, he wondered who else was too. When he happened upon someone. “Oh Hello.” He said in a way that only Elijah could that sounded inviting yet frightening at the same time.
