Armand de Leyendecker
you’re telling me a guy who tried to kill himself when claudia left nola and then again when she left paris and when armand told him claudia didn’t love him and who spent this whole season sick with grief for her. you’re telling me this guy sat through that seance heard what claudia said to him and he just chuckled and shrugged all that shit off like it was nothing. in what fucking world
The showrunners chose to make Louis and Claudia black and experience life in the Jim crow era. They chose to do the full race swap in season 1, not just making the characters but also the story black. They chose to racialize the violence that both Louis and Claudia face throughout the first season. No one was forcing their hands and they got praised for the stuff they did in the first two seasons, for bringing in the added nuance of systemic racism. So why should I as an audience member of colour give them any grace when they choose to write dialogues containing numerous racialized and gendered micro aggressions not just towards Louis or Claudia but also towards minor characters like Dee or Lemuel who weren't supposed to exist as they are (black) in the show?? Why is Daniel (a white man) who is supposed to be a Pulitzer prize winning investigative journalist who was lecturing Louis on his own story about the racism he faced referring to him as a "bucket of Louisiana fried chicken"?? Why is Armand textually belittled for being a CSA victim while Lestat is endlessly provided with grace and understanding in the text of the show for his victimhood?? Who thought it was alright to adapt a scene from the books involving white characters talking about parental betrayal and insert racially charged dialogues (that too old school racist shit not even the n word) when it was unnecessary to preserve the nuance of the scene?? Why is this show denying the racialized nature of domestic violence that they chose to portray in S1 ??? (Lestat getting mildly annoyed that Louis didn't enjoy going to the operas in nola when he had to act as Lestat's servant to be allowed in tf??) Why is Gabriella like that??
I cannot help but look at this season of the show as a sign of the times tbh. IWTV aired during a very liberal era of entertainment and now that fascism and white supremacy are on the rise everywhere white entertainers have become comfortable enough to fall back into old habits. Never thought this show in particular would have this problem when I watched the first season but it is what it is I guess
How it has felt watching tvl after waiting for 2 years, and excitedly recommending the show to everyone I know:
THANK YOUUU NEW YORK TIMES
keep thinking I'm done talking about tvl but then I find more to say...
so many of the relationships were unceremoniously demolished this season, flattened into either love or hate with all nuance abandoned
louis & armand: now pure hate, ignoring the 70+ years they spent trying to be there for each other, their complex power dynamics, and how desperately they both wanted (needed!) the relationship to work. retcons any affection louis ever felt for armand, turns armand into a one note, scheming villain
louis & daniel: their friendship (one of iwtv's most compelling dynamics imo!) lasts the length of one conversation, and then somehow (off screen, of course) devolves to daniel hating louis enough to be in on the plan to behead him and let armand torture him???
louis & lestat: oooh boy. so they literally never unpack lestat abusing louis, louis is the one who spends the season taking the blame for everything and apologising, the trauma of losing claudia and the seance is laughed off!?, if they've resolved any of their issues we don't see it happen. they're pushed back together at the end of the season in a way that feels inorganic
sidenote: louis and lemuel: lem just kind of... disappears partway through the season
louis & claudia: this one maybe hurts the most. the seance positions claudia as a master manipulator who hates louis, and hates him more than she hates lestat, which contradicts what we learnt from her and louis' povs in iwtv. yes, things between them are complicated in S1&2, yes there is resentment there, but the love and solidarity and familial connection is all dismissed as like, a long con. louis spends multiple episodes still fixated on claudia's memory, yet he's able to move on from the seance without issue? how is there any logic to that?
claudia & lestat: again, lestat takes no responsibility for decades of abuse (doesn't matter how the train scene happened, it's far from the only thing he did wrong), he doesn't own up to his part in the trial that killed claudia and madeleine, and yet claudia says she liked him more than louis??
sidenote 2: all of lestat's wrongdoings are put down to him having the blood of akasha (so many problems with this) but...wouldn't that same blood have been passed on to louis and claudia, and lestat's other fledglings?? idk the lore, but why is that only an excuse lestat gets to use?
lestat & armand: given the glimpses of these two in iwtv, i was excited to see them in tvl :( but again, there's barely anything on screen to show their relationship! we're told it happened, and though i haven't read them i know it's significant in the books, but lestat shows nothing but disdain for armand in tvl, and there's no affection to suggest a complicated history. why did lestat remain such a large figure in armand's life if it was (as nicki kind of implies) only sex? how and why was lestat contacted about the trial, and if lestat only tolerated armand (in contrast to his love for louis) why would he ever go to paris and rehearse and take part in the trial, seemingly of his own free will??
lestat & nicki: supposedly a great love of lestat's life? just a passing fling? who knows! nicki is another character we are only shown glimpses of. i've gathered more context from tumblr posts about his importance than i did from watching this whole season. that's not good writing!
daniel & armand: oh my beloved DM...two seasons of slow build, the promise of something to explore. and then it all went wrong. it's both rushed and devoid of emotion. we find out daniel was turned on a plane, not in dubai , we're told armand followed daniel for 50+ years, we're told armand loves daniel, we're told armand can help him with his vampire gifts, in the finale armand refers to daniel as his companion. we are told all of this, we witness none of it. daniel goes from hating armand for turning and abandoning him and doubting everything armand tells him to doing whatever armand says in the span of, what, months? does daniel suddenly have 50+ years of forgotten memories back? where is the skeptic journalist from iwtv?
please feel free to add more in the replies, i am sure there's more i've overlooked, i just can't believe how completely this season has tried to rewrite the entire heart of the first two
Are we the sum of our worst moments?
amc’s iwtv… how to explain to someone that it’s prestige tv.. a masterfully written epic saga on unreliable narration and the wateriness of memory and distortion of the truth, unintentional or otherwise . AND it’s a toxic gothic gay romance with lots of gore and sex, cause hot vampires, yknow. BUT. it’s cinematic. but also like you’re watching a play. AND above all it’s a heartbreaking tragedy about boundless love intertwined with the crushing inability to love correctly. uhhh anthony bourdain is there too. AND it’s fucking. hilarious
every season the evilest vampire gets to rock a cunty little bob. last season lestat got the bob, now it's armands turn. heavy is the head that wears the cunty little bob
…is this my legacy
lestat having a musical written about his life by elton john which got negative critiques all across the board and only had a 2 month run on broadway before closing is the most lestat thing that could happen to him
gilbert...
Farmers' market haul.
More Lestat
And this little experiment to stylize him
