The most interesting 'dragon' which is not dragon-type, according to Dragon Tamers...

The dragon tamers at the Battle Frontiers in Emerald and Platinum both have tables of Pokemon they can use, and all of them check out as 'dragon adjacent' Pokemon. Lance's Pokemon, Tyranitar, Nidoking, Feraligatr, Milotic, Bastiodon, Kangaskhan and Arcanine (Lance used the last 2 in Stadium in the 90s, only Electabuzz didn't make the cut). Most all of them are either dragon-shaped, in dragon egg groups, or has previously been used by Lance within the franchise to establish their place as a 'dragon' despite lacking the most common association, type.

But the weirdest of the list, by far......... is Skarmory. So, Skarmory may be a dragon?

Linked above is the stat info on Skarmory within the Battle Frontier's Emerald and Platinum tables for the Dragon Tamer trainer class.

Considering the first location we ever see the Pokemon in is just outside of Blackthorn, perhaps the natives have a more intimate knowledge about the Pokemon that shape their view of it as a dragon. I mean, they don't see Ursaring as a dragon and it's also somewhat unique to Route 45. So it's can't be just the proximity, there's something about Skarmory in particular.

The Shield dex entry for Skarmory mentions Skarmory is "used for heraldic designs" but we don't see that yet anywhere in the franchise. However, I did find one of the Pokelids in Tokorozawa, Japan:

Considering Skarmory's association to weaponry, and the common idea of 'slaying dragons', it could be seen oppositionally to dragons in a way that also includes them. Perhaps 'we're not so different, you and I'. In Pokemon Emerald, the dex entry reads: "People in the past used feathers fallen from Skarmory to make swords and knives." Sun, the dex entry reads, "In times long past, warriors used [Skarmory feathers] as swords." Something about the history of Skarmory's feathers seems to have remained an important aspect of the Pokemon's status to the Blackthorn people. Their notion of what constitutes a 'legend' is often freely equated with dragons.

"You likely know that dragons are Pokémon spoken of in legends!"

So in conclusion, I do believe Skarmory is like the "Johto" version of Arcanine, a Pokemon natively spoken of in legends and respected by Blackthorn's Dragon Tamers as a legendary long after the rest of the world changes their perspective of these Pokemon.

Lance/Bruno are the main 'canon' character shipping in the Ultra Sun Parallel Universe (USPU). When Lance is feeling good & nothing serious is going on, he is very chatty and silly, which is a good contrast to his introverted, haiku-writing martial artist boyfriend

'Bashira' is a whooooole other topic that applies to all of my universes as an important figure within the Blackthorn clan. Not gonna get into it this second but you can know that right there is a Dragonair gem :)

Happy Year of the snake! I thought I would start the new year with some info about my OC with an Arbok herself- that being Lance's mother.

I've given her the name Timandra, with "dra-" from 🐉. She is a kind & traditional woman. Timandra is also mute and great with embroierie. Her partner Pokemon is Arbok. Lance grew up with an Ekans, so no wonder he is very good with Dratini & Dragonair! 🐍✌️

Trace and Elaine's keystone accessories were a gift from Blue for the hope of one of them to defeat Red. Ironically it was Chase to defeat Red with his non-evolved Pokémon.

Blue received the extra keystones as a gift for his grandfather, extended by Professor Sycamore. The pallet trio were gifted a trip to Kalos for winning Blaine's Family Fued style quiz show against a family of Pokemaniacs.

As for the fate of these mega stones, Elaine only uses hers in the Ferrum league to improve her bond with Mewtwo now. Trace, meanwhile, lost interest in using it after learning how it pained Pidgeot, and he ended up regifting his keystone to a very promising young trainer.

Chase, Elaine, and Trace grew up hearing about how cool the Pallet town trio were. All three began with excitement about fighting Red and made bets between themselves over which of them could defeat Red first.

Chase won the bet, though their journey as new trainers exploring Kanto certainly shifted all three of their goals quite a bit. Elaine mostly stopped pursuing battles after capturing Mewtwo, and Trace became focused on trying to defeat Chase to no avail.

Despite defeating the legendary trainer with his unevolved team, Chase hasn't brought up the bet he won nor does he brag about defeating Red. He thinks its funny to listen to people talk about Red as this undefeated mysterious guy because to Chase he was just, 'that older, funny, mute neighbor kid who once broke his window while practicing to throw Pokeballs and tried to tape it back together before their mom came home.'

His chatroom calls Chase out for having no video proof of him beating Red, but the only audience he'll promise for their rematch someday is solely Misty.

The eruption of Cinnabar island caused an immediate evacuation, fortunately there were no fatal injuries. Most of the regular populous escaped north to Viridian City.

To accommodate for the large influx of new residents, the city finally removed conservation protections over Viridian Forest. The former widlife reserve was threatened to make room for the city's expansion of housing. Many Pokemon populations fled early at the sign of chainsaws coming in, some eastward towards Cerulean City, some southward into Pallet Town's grassy hills, and some westward to Mt. Silver's elevations.

Blaine refused to take refuge in Viridian City as to not endorse the removal of a large Pokemon habitat. He continued to operate his gym without a building in the Seafoam Islands until the league cracked down on his improper procedure.

Professor Oak gave a talk with DJ Mary and other conservationists about the harm of removing Viridian Forest, luckily the subsequent public outcry was enough to finally overturn the city’s plans. Many Pokemon have returned, along with a few new ones. Viridian has begun to work with their southern neighbors on alleviating the population problem instead.

Kanto boasts a variety of mountains but it shares their tallest with their western neighbor. Their side is the windward side. As winds blow across the inlet waters off the bike trail from Celadon City and across the greater waters to the south, the clouds are pushed up the higher elevation to climb Mt. Silver. This is why Viridian City is called an evergreen city, because it receives a lot of precipitation in the valley of the mountain and remains fairly warm through most of the year from the nearby ocean.

Meanwhile, the mountain range which contains the Rock Tunnel does not have extreme high elevation, but rather, it is a hazardous area to traverse through climbing with steep faces, slimy and often wet rocks from the nearby ocean’s moisture, and (typically) heavy rain flowing through rivers within it out to the east. Lavender Town and the northeastern corner of Saffron City are slightly arid due to this nearby range.

Mt. Moon is the smallest of these mountain ranges with trees and flora freely able to grow. A tunnel has been constructed long ago and regularly maintained. It remains the most popular tourist destination of the Kanto mountains due to the stories of shooting stars landing here.

The Indigo League is a famous league internationally which comes with a lot more drama as a result. Gyms are constantly in competition with each other for maintaining official status and "street cred".

Gyms typically begin as unofficial clubs. Excellent trainers from all over the world come to try and garner enough support from other trainers, both native and visiting, to join their club. With enough members, they can apply for the official Gym assessment program where the Pokemon League evaluates the clubs and grades them on a 10-point scale during the off season.

Each club is then compared within the municipal area to pick the top rated gym to represent that area. The top 8 highest rated clubs in all of Kanto are then designated as gyms through the assessment and given established official gym order for the next League season. Typically, the Indigo League changes every year, whether it's new gyms or varying the gym order.

The most obvious example of complication is the Fighting Dojo in Saffron City. The Dojo, ran by Koichi, rated higher than Pewter, Cerulean, and Vermillion City gyms on their first two evaluations, but it ranked much lower than the Unovan-born Sabrina and her Psychic club which formed around the same time. As a result, their club was not qualified to become an official league gym because Saffron City already had a representative gym.

It didn't stop Koichi from causing a stir by placing mock-style Gym signs up on his building. While the league was not legally permitted for force them to remove the mock-style Gym signs, the officials did make it a point to dock the Fighting Dojo points on subsequent assessments under poor sportsman-like conduct.

Other, lesser known clubs include the Bird Sanctuary club which is hosted in Fuchsia City but they tend to train along Route 14.

Kanto holds a few festivals that are shared with close neighbors, but one that is unique to the region is called the Garden Festival.

One of the longest running festivals in their history, a child is chosen to be the divine messenger and they are carried around for 4 days straight. The child is never to touch the ground, as they themselves will carry a grass Pokemon such as Bulbasaur, Paras, Tangela, etc. It’s supposed to be an offering to the process of raising trainers, those trainers raising Pokemon, and to ask for the blessings of eternal growth (such as financial growth, bond growth, strength growth). The child is usually carried by a Pokemon but can be handled by people as long as their feet do not touch the ground.

During the festival, they have floats for all Pokemon found in the Kanto region, and shrines specifically dedicated to Articuno, Zapdos, and Moltres. There’s lots of street vendors selling food, souvenir stands, masks fashioned after young grass types, and music played on wood instruments.

The Garden festival runs from July 13th to July 17th in Celadon city. Erika's family has been arranging the festival for many generations.
